SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Geopolitics of Energy
DESCRIPTION:Policies to ensure the security of energy supply and access have long been domestic and foreign policy priorities for the United States and will remain so\, including for the health of our economy.  Looking ahead\, however\, two developments will increasingly affect how energy and foreign policy come together.  The first is climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in concert with others.   A second is rapid change in global markets driven by new\, large-scale consumers in China\, India\, and elsewhere and the rise of wind\, solar\, and other\, increasingly cheap renewables.   How do these factors come together\, and what will be the main areas of focus of US foreign energy policy in the years to come? \nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with former Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson as he discusses these factors and their effect on foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Ross Wilson is a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council\, visiting lecturer in international affairs at the George Washington University\, and Global Minnesota board member. Over the course of a 30-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service\, he served as American ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan and held assignments at the U.S. Embassies in Moscow and Prague and at the U.S. Consulate General in Melbourne\, Australia. In Washington\, Ambassador Wilson held several positions including chief U.S. negotiator for the Free Trade Area of the Americas. In 2010-2014\, Ambassador Wilson served as director of the Atlantic Council’s Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center\, where he led the Council’s work on the former Soviet states\, Turkey\, and regional energy and economic issues and organized the Council’s annual Energy and Economic Summit in Istanbul. Ambassador Wilson received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and master’s degrees from Columbia University and the U.S. National War College.  He is a recipient of the president’s Meritorious Service Award\, as well as numerous Department of State awards and honors. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is produced in partnership with the Landmark Center. \nOnline registrations for Global Conversations: Geopolitics of Energy are closed.  Walk-ins are welcome.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Prospects for Afghanistan and Pakistan
DESCRIPTION:Online registrations for STP Global Conversations: Afghanistan and Pakistan are closed.  Walk-ins are welcome. \nMajor internal conflict has plagued Afghanistan for four decades. The U.S.\, for its part\, has conducted military operations in the country nearly continuously since 9/11. Today\, war with the Taliban persists\, and tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan have gradually deteriorated. As his time in office drew to a close\, President Obama limited further withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. \nNewly laid-out plans from the Trump Administration for Afghanistan and the South Asia region have prompted national discussion and further questions. What’s next as we move forward in the new direction? \nDon’t miss this conversation with Dr. Manju Parikh\, who will offer considerable insight into the Trump administration’s proposed foreign policy efforts in Afghanistan and Pakistan. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Manju Parikh is professor emerita of Political Science at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. Her teaching has been framed by a strong interest in the global issues of development\, freedom and human rights. Dr. Parikh taught courses on international relations with a focus on Asian politics\, global women’s political concerns and gender equality\, and Asian American immigrant experiences. She has published in both scholarly journals and popular magazines and has presented at numerous conferences and public lectures. Dr. Parikh received a Fulbright Scholarship in 2009 for research on women legislators in Pakistan and their successful legislation against workplace sexual harassment. Currently\, she serves on the boards of Middle East Peace Now and the Collection in Focus Guides Council at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is produced in partnership with the Landmark Center.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: Prospects for Afghanistan and Pakistan
DESCRIPTION:Major internal conflict has plagued Afghanistan for four decades. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is produced in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library.

The EU has helped secure peace in Europe for the past 60 years. Now it faces an uncertain future. Featured speakers and panelists include former U.S. Foreign Service Officer Tom Hanson\, who will offer his assessment of how these changes will affect the future of U.S.-European relations. Other national and local experts will discuss the impact of these changes on business\, diplomacy\, and international security. Don’t miss this timely discussion of critical issues that will affect prosperity and security on both sides of the Atlantic. \n  \nAgenda\n  \nKeynote Speaker\nWe are pleased to announce that David Rennie\, Washington bureau chief for The Economist\, will  deliver the keynote address\, Brexit and Beyond at this year’s Great Decisions conference.\nFew other commentators are as qualified to explore and explain the links between events like  Brexit and the election of Donald Trump\, and what may come next.\nRennie’s access to decision-makers and his almost-weekly reporting trips around the country and world have given him a front-row seat as populist forces upended governments and elites across the West. As Washington bureau chief he has profiled presidential candidates and political leaders at the national\, state and local level\, including interviewing Donald Trump multiple times. \n  \nPresented in partnership with

SUMMARY:Global Conversations Mpls: Venezuela and Latin America’s Political Pendulum
DESCRIPTION:Event registration is closed\, but walk-ins are welcome. \nJoin us to learn more about the direction of politics in Latin America and the impact of populism across the continent.  The forces of change have more to do with socio-economics than ideology. Dramatic economic and political crises have coincided in countries like Brazil and Venezuela.  And there are numerous recent events throughout this diverse region to explore.  Is the coalition opposing President Maduro in Venezuela splintering?  After surviving a recent vote on corruption charges\, what direction will Brazil’s president take?   What is the impact of recent elections in Argentina?   Where are there opportunities for the U.S. to improve relations and develop an approach to Latin America befitting of the 21st century?  Erik Brand\, publisher of the Latin America Advisor\, will share insights into current developments in Venezuela and Latin America. \n\n  \n  \nAbout the Speaker\n Erik Brand is publisher of the Inter-American Dialogue’s Latin America Advisor in Washington\, D.C. He also directs the organization’s corporate program. Previously\, he worked at the International Advisory Group\, a publishing and public affairs firm in New York City. Earlier in his career\, Brand worked at the Advisory Board Company in Washington\, D.C. and\, briefly\, for the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress. He graduated with a double major\, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa\, from Wheaton College and has undertaken master’s degree coursework in international management and public affairs at the University of Maryland and the University of Minnesota. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is produced in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Turkey - A Partner in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nOf all NATO allies\, Turkey represents the most daunting challenge for the Trump administration. In the wake of a failed military coup in July 2016\, the autocratic trend in Ankara took a turn for the worse. One year on\, an overwhelming majority of the population considers the United States to be their country’s greatest security threat. In this age of a worsening “clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West\, even more important than its place on the map is what Turkey symbolically represents as the most institutionally Westernized Muslim country in the world. \nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with former Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson as he discusses the current situation in Turkey and its impact on foreign policy. Paul is produced in partnership with Landmark Center.
