She will present the results of ImpactHER’s 2020 survey of the effects of Covid-19 on female business owners throughout Africa. Alongside her many years of professional experience\, Ms. Benslimane holds a medical degree from Hassan II University of Casablanca\, and an associate degree in Cultural Project Management from Marcel Hicter Association in Brussels\, Belgium.\nMaria Fernandez Hernandez of Venezuela\, Public Policy Analysis and Public Administration: Ms. Hernandez currently works as the Operations Manager with Triple P Latiniamerica\, an international organization that provides positive parenting support. In that role\, she defines and leads the organization’s operations. During her Fellowship year\, Ms. Hernandez wants to learn more about crime prevention policies in the United States. She plans to use the knowledge that she gains in this area to contribute to crime prevention and alleviation in Venezuela\, which has one of the highest crime rates in the world. She holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the Central University of Venezuela\, and a certificate in Impact Evaluation of Public Policies and Social Programs from Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.\nMushtaq Malla of India\, Law and Human Rights: Mr. Malla currently works as Superintendent with the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Prisons. He plans to use his Fellowship to gain more theoretical knowledge about human rights\, as well as practical knowledge about the protection of prisoner’s rights\, rehabilitation\, and reintegration. Since Mr. Malla works primarily with young offenders\, he plans to focus his time on learning about ways to address issues specific to that population\, and models to rehabilitate them. Mr. Malla holds a master’s degree in Social Work and a bachelor’s degree in Science from the University of Kashmir.\nBoban Stojanoski of North Macedonia\, Public Policy Analysis and Public Administration: Mr. Stojanoski is a policy maker in the Ministry of Finance in North Macedonia. He is responsible for creating policies in the financial system area\, including drafting legislation to regulate the country’s accounting\, auditing\, and payment services and systems.. He plans to use his Fellowship to gain more knowledge in the field of public policy analysis\, including methodologies and models to formulate and implement innovative policies that effectively address the most challenging issues in society. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Banking Management from FON University and a Master’s degree in Accounting and Auditing from Sts. DESCRIPTION:Trade allows us to sell what we produce at home and purchase what we don’t. It lowers prices and gives us greater variety and innovation. Understanding our place in the global trade network is rarely simple: Trade has become a question mark for struggling economies\, sometimes a scapegoat for failing businesses\, and for many who struggle to understand it\, nothing short of a four-letter word. \nAs former Chairman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States\, Fred Hochberg maintains trade is easier to comprehend than we commonly think. Drawing from experience and his book Trade is Not a Four-Letter Word\, Hochberg is primed to discuss trade in the particular context of bipartisan trade agreements\, such as the 2020 U.S. Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Negotiated by the Trump Administration and passed with bipartisan support in Congress\, the success and value of the agreement for American workers has been touted publicly on both sides of the legislative aisle. \nThis event will include a short presentation followed by a conversation moderated by Jessica Libby\, Managing Director\, Trade & Customs for KMPG US. DESCRIPTION:As relations between the United States and China grow more tense\, avenues for continued peace and understanding are critical. This Global Conversations unites two experts for dialogue and discussion on this crucial relationship. Dr. Yawei Liu\, is Senior Advisor for China at The Carter Center and David Firestein is President and CEO of the George H. W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations. They will share their insights\, reflections\, and hopes for a future that includes the United States and China coexisting peacefully. \nThis webinar will have ASL Interpreters and Closed Captioning. \n  \n  \n  \nAbout the Speakers\n  \nYawei Liu is the senior advisor for China at The Carter Center and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also the associate director of the China Research Center in Atlanta and an adjunct professor of Political Science at Emory University. He is the founding editor of www.chinaelections.org which went online in 2002. He launched the US-China Perception Monitor websites [www.uscnpm.org (English) and cn3.uscnpm.org (Chinese)] in 2014. Yawei earned his B.A in English literature from Xian Foreign Languages Institute (1982)\, M.A. in recent Chinese history from the University of Hawaii (1989) and Ph. D. in American History from Emory University (1996). \n  \nDavid J. Firestein is President and CEO of the George H. W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations. and a founding and current member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. He previously served as executive director of The University of Texas at Austin’s (UT) China Public Policy Center (CPPC) and a clinical professor at UT’s Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. He served as senior vice president and Perot Fellow at the EastWest Institute where he led the Institute’s work in the areas of U.S.-China relations\, East Asian security\, and U.S.-Russia relations. \nA decorated career U.S. diplomat from 1992–2010\, Mr. Firestein specialized primarily in U.S.-China relations. Toward the end of his State Department career\, he served as an elected member of the Board of Governors of the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA)\, the union and professional association of the United States Foreign Service. In this capacity\, he represented and worked to advance the interests of several thousand State Department constituents. SUMMARY:NATO's Climate Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The world is changing\, and so is NATO\, the transatlantic alliance. The NATO 2030 initiative is intended to ensure the alliance of nations remains ready to face tomorrow’s challenges. The next Summit of the allied leaders will take place on June 14 at NATO headquarters in Brussels\, Belgium. At this meeting NATO leaders will make decisions on the substantive and forward-looking NATO 2030 agenda to deal with the expected challenges of Russia’s aggressive actions\, the threat of terrorism\, cyber attacks\, emerging and disruptive technologies\, the security impact of climate challenges\, and the rise of China. \nA few weeks ahead of the summit NATO speakers are virtually “touring” to  listen to America’s heartbeat and engage with citizens about climate change\, security\, and the prospects of a environmentally green defense. The program presented in coooperation with Global Minnesota will focus on climate and security. \nRegistration is free. \nRegistered participants may access this program on Global Minnesota’s YouTube Channel. \nSpeakers\nDr. Bryan Wells\, Chief Scientist\, NATO \nBryan Wells was appointed Chief Scientist of NATO in July\, 2019. In this role\, he has three major responsibilities. First\, he serves as Chair of the NATO Science and Technology Board (STB). In this context\, he serves as the STB’s representative to the Secretary General and the NAC and is responsible to the STB for the effective coordination of NATO’s Science and Technology (S&T) program. Second\, he serves as the senior scientific advisor to NATO leadership\, ensuring that appropriate and timely S&T based advice is provided to NATO senior decision makers. Finally\, he leads the Office of the Chief Scientist at NATO Headquarters. \nPrior to his appointment as Chief Scientist\, Dr. Wells was the UK Ministry of Defense’s Head\, of S&T Policy\, Strategic Research and International Engagement. His responsibilities included the provision of strategic policy advice on the international and research aspects of the Ministry’s science and technology program. Additionally\, he has recently completed a three-year term (2016-2018) as Chair of the European Defense Agency’s Research & Technology Steering Board. Dr Wells joined the UK Ministry of Defense in 1988. He served as Assistant Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Defense 1989-1992\, and has held a range of other posts\, including Deputy Director of NATO Policy 1997-1999\, and Director of Counter-Proliferation and Arms Control 2002-2008. During 1999-2002 he was on secondment to the Lord Chancellor’s Department (now the Department of Justice) as Head of Administrative Justice. \nDr. Wells was educated at St Catherine’s College\, Oxford (1978-85) and Merton College Oxford (1985-1988). He graduated with a BA with honors in Chemistry in 1982 and was awarded a PhD in 1985. He conducted three years post-Doctorate research at Oxford University as a Junior Research Fellow at Merton College. \nDavid Angell\, Permanent Representative – Canada \nDavid Angell (BA [Political Science]\, Yale University\, 1986; MA [Political Science]\, University of Toronto\, 1987; MPhil [International Relations]\, University of Cambridge\, 1988) served as assistant secretary to the Cabinet\, Foreign and Defence Policy\, at the Privy Council Office since 2016. \nHe has also served as high commissioner to Kenya (2012 to 2016); as director general for International Organizations\, Human Rights and Democracy (2009 to 2012)\, for International Organizations (2008 to 2009) and for Africa (2007 to 2008); and as high commissioner to Nigeria (2004 to 2007). \nMr. Angell was the G8 deputy personal representative (2001 to 2004) and personal representative (2007 to 2012) for Africa and\, as such\, a principal organizer of the 2002 and 2010 G8 summits at Kananaskis and Muskoka. \nHe has served at the United Nations (1996 to 2001)\, including as alternate representative on the UN Security Council (1999 to 2000)\, before which he was the advisor to General John de Chastelain on the International Body on the decommissioning of arms (1995) and the Multi-Party Negotiations on Northern Ireland (1996). \nMr. Angell has also served at the embassy in Washington\, D.C. (1991 to 1993). DESCRIPTION:A number of Minnesota citizen groups use the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals as a “North Star” to help guide their work. Our previous SDG Roundtable presentations featured a number of these groups\, including West Central Initiative Fund\, GHR Foundation\, Ecotone\, United Way\, and Sundance Family Foundation. \nThis SDG Roundtable features the Shreya R. Dixit Memorial Foundation\, a Minnesota advocacy group that works to increase road safety by advocating for laws\, corporate policies\, and individual commitments to eliminate the use of cell phones while driving. Their success – at the legislature and with major Minnesota companies – has expanded their mission to work with high school students\, creating Distraction-Free Life clubs. They also incorporate the SDG 3.6 goal\, reducing injuries and fatalities related to road crashes by half by 2030\, into their work. \nVijay Dixit\, co-founder and board chair of the Shreya R. Dixit Memorial Foundation\, will present the history of the foundation and how the incorporation of SDG 3.6 related activities will help guide its future. \n \nPresented in partnership with United Nations Association of Minnesota and Shreya R. DESCRIPTION:After nearly 20 years of war and a U.S. military withdrawal\, the ground situation in Afghanistan has become increasingly uncertain and unstable for civilians as the government collapsed at the feet of the Taliban insurgents. Even before Kabul fell to the Taliban\, evacuations were difficult given the volatile conditions and securing the safe departure of those seeking to flee is a race against time. \nJoin us in partnership with WorldOregon as we hear from Mark Ward\, a 30-year diplomatic veteran and Director of the Syria Transition Assistance and Response Team at the U.S. Department of State\, and Zaher Wahab\, Professor Emeritus at Lewis & Clark College and educator at the American University of Afghanistan\, as they discuss the rapidly evolving situation in Afghanistan and what society looks like under Taliban rule. \nThe program will be presented via Zoom. \nREGISTER \nAbout the Speakers\nMark Ward is a retired career diplomat who recently left Afghanistan where he was country director for the International Medical Corps for two years after leaving the U.S. Department of State State Department. As the rift between the U.S. and China grows further\, South Korea may end up in the middle of the two superpowers. \nJoin speaker Dr. Raymond Kuo\, Political Scientist with the RAND Corporation\, and expert in international security and East Asia\, as he discusses what the future holds for U.S.-Korea relations. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Raymond Kuo is a Political Scientist at the RAND Corporation and an expert in international security and East Asia. Previously\, he was the Executive Director of the Midwest International Policy Institute. Previously\, Dr. Kuo was a tenure-track professor at Fordham University and the University at Albany\, SUNY\, and has also worked for the United Nations\, the International Center for Transitional Justice\, and others. Winner of the 2020 Douglas Dillon Award for a Book of Distinction on the Practice of American Diplomacy\, “The Dissent Channel” exposes a foreign policy driven more by inertia than principles\, to suit short-term political needs over long-term strategies. \nJoin us for a virtual conversation with former U.S. Foreign Service Officer Elizabeth Shackelford as she discusses\, “The Dissent Channel” and her experience as a diplomat during the precarious rise and devastating fall of the world’s newest country\, South Sudan. \n \nAbout the Speaker\nElizabeth Shackelford is a senior fellow in U.S. foreign policy with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. She was a career diplomat with the U.S. Department of State until December 2017\, when she resigned in protest of the Trump administration. Her resignation letter was the first to draw widespread attention to the declining state of diplomacy under Donald Trump. As a Foreign Service Officer\, Elizabeth served in Somalia\, Kenya\, South Sudan\, Poland\, and Washington\, D.C. For her work in South Sudan during the outbreak of civil war in 2013\, she received the Barbara Watson Award for Consular Excellence\, the State Department’s highest honor for consular work. Elizabeth is the author of The Dissent Channel: American Diplomacy in a Dishonest Age\, winner of the 2020 Douglas Dillon Book Award. Her op-eds and commentary have been published in numerous outlets including Chicago Tribune\, Los Angeles Times\, and Slate. SUMMARY:On Exhibit: "When Minnesota Fed the Children of Europe"
DESCRIPTION:A special exhibit at MSP Airport notes the contributions of Minnesota to hunger relief in Europe during and after World War I. The exhibit is available for viewing into fall of 2021. \nDuring World War I\, many people in Europe faced starvation due to the German occupation and British blockade. In response\, a Commission for Relief in Belgium was created to help feed children and mothers in Belgium and northern France. More than half of the food aid that went to Europe was wheat and wheat flour\, much of it coming from the farmers and flour mills of Minnesota. This hunger relief effort became one of the largest humanitarian efforts in history\, feeding more than 150 million Europeans from France to Russia between 1914 and 1923. \nChildren from Belgium sent letters of gratitude to American children. A selection of these letters has been translated and used to create a powerful exhibit shown across the United States. \nPresented in partnership with the Consulate General of Belgium in New York City\, the Embassy of Belgium\, the French American Chamber of Commerce of Minnesota\, the Mall of America\, Wafels & Dinges\, and Wallonia-Brussels International (WBI). \n

DESCRIPTION:The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a United Nations plan to build a better world for people and our planet by 2030. These goals recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth\, address social needs such as education\, health\, and equality\, and tackle climate challenges by working to preserve oceans and forests. \nHear from Nicholas S. Deychakiwsky\, Senior Program Officer in Civil Society at the Mott Foundation\, as he discusses why a large\, private philanthropic organization such as the Mott Foundation believes that the SDGs have relevance to its local partnerships and how using the SDGs in their work advances their mission to achieve a just\, equitable\, and sustainable society. \n \nAbout the Speaker\nNick Deychakiwsky is a Senior Program Officer at the Mott Foundation working in two Civil Society program areas: Enhancing Community Philanthropy and Strengthening Civic Space. In late 1990\, Deychakiwsky moved to Ukraine\, where he worked in various roles supporting democratic and economic reform before joining the Mott Foundation in 2000. Working in the Foundation’s former Prague office\, he was responsible for grantmaking in Russia\, Ukraine\, Belarus and Moldova until late 2006. He subsequently managed U.S. and global nonprofit/philanthropic sector infrastructure and community philanthropy grantmaking. Since 2016\, Deychakiwsky has served as a board member for the United Philanthropy Forum. Deychakiwsky earned a Master of Business Administration from Columbia University and worked for Mobil Oil as a supply analyst before returning to school to study music and obtain a master’s degree in choral conducting. \nPresented in partnership with the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. \nIf you are registering for this event from outside the United States\, please go here.
