SUMMARY:Great Decisions: U.S. Engagement of Africa
DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. \nNearly half of the world’s population will reside in Africa by the end of the century. In addition\, the continent’s wide variety of natural resources has placed Africa at the center of intense competition between the U.S. and China. What could the U.S. strategy toward this critical region look like? \nThis program is presented by the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis through a partnership with Global Minnesota. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year. Global Minnesota facilitates the statewide Great Decisions program by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association.  \nAnne Linnee\, presenter \nFollowing a more than 20-year career as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer\, Anne retired from the State Department in 2023.  During her career she primarily worked on issues in\, and related to\, Africa and Asia.  Her overseas assignments included the United Arab Emirates\, Afghanistan\, China\, Pakistan\, Mauritania and South Africa\, as well as Washington\, DC.  Her final assignment was as the U.S. Consul General in Durban\, South Africa. \nIf you would like to register\, please RSVP to frontdesk@womansclub.org. \nInterested in joining or starting a Great Decisions discussion group? DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to everyone.  \nSince the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1786\, Morocco and the United States have shared the longest unbroken diplomatic relationship in U.S. history. Over the centuries\, this bilateral relationship has grown through collaboration in law enforcement\, joint military training\, and counterterrorism efforts\, as well as cooperation in education\, economic development\, and the strengthening of civil society. \nJoin Global Minnesota and the Landmark Center for a Global Conversation featuring former Chargé d’affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission to the U.S. Embassy in Morocco Matt Lussenhop\, who will share insights on the history\, strategic importance\, and future of the U.S.–Morocco relationship. \nJenni’s Cafe will be open for guests to purchase lunch at the Landmark Center. Bag lunches are also welcome. \nThank you to the Landmark Center for their collaboration on this event. \nRegister \nSpeaker: Matthew Lussenhop\nMatthew Lussenhop served as a Foreign Service Officer from 1990 to 2022. From 2019 until his retirement in 2022\, he worked in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary\, including one year as Acting Assistant Secretary in July 2019. He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Belgium (2016-2019)\, including 18 months as Chargé d’affaires\, and as DCM at the U.S. Embassy to the Kingdom of Morocco\, ten months as the Chargé d’affaires (2013-16). \nMr. Lussenhop served in the fields of public diplomacy and strategic communications in numerous posts overseas\, including Public Affairs Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul\, Afghanistan from 2010-2011. Other overseas assignments include positions at U.S. embassies in Bulgaria\, Kuwait\, Morocco\, Oman\, the Philippines\, and Saudi Arabia. His domestic work in the State Department includes Director of Policy in ECA\, Director of Public Diplomacy Training at the Foreign Service Institute\, and press officer in the Office of Near Eastern and North African Affairs. He retired with the rank of Minister-Counselor and is the recipient of multiple State Department Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards and a Presidential Rank Award. SUMMARY:The Human Cost of War: Understanding the Crisis in Sudan
DESCRIPTION:This event is being held virtually and is open to everyone. \nDecades of political instability and disputes over power in Sudan have resulted in a calamitous civil war. In 2023\, fighting erupted between rival military groups: the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has precipitated extreme violence\, large-scale massacres\, mass displacement\, and an alarming humanitarian crisis. Now\, fighting has expanded throughout most of the country\, with civilians often bearing the brunt of the violence as infrastructure collapses and access to food\, healthcare\, and safety become scarce. \nJoin Global Minnesota for a panel discussion on the current situation in Sudan and how international actors are responding to the crisis. The conversation will feature Ambassador Michelle Gavin\, the Council on Foreign Relations’ Senior Fellow for Africa Policy Studies\, and Oge Onubogu\, Director and Senior Fellow of the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Global Minnesota Program Director Erin Hart\, who served as press officer for Southern Africa and Sudan at the U.S. Department of State from 2024-2025\, will moderate the event and audience Q&A. \nRegister \nAbout the Speaker: Michelle D. Gavin\nMichelle D. Gavin is the Ralph Bunche senior fellow for Africa policy studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. She has over twenty-five years of experience in international affairs in government and non-profit roles and was formerly the managing director of The Africa Center\, a multidisciplinary institution dedicated to increasing understanding of contemporary Africa. From 2011 to 2014 she was the U.S. Ambassador to Botswana and served concurrently as the U.S. Representative to the Southern African Development Community. \nDuring Ambassador Gavin’s tenure\, the United States and Botswana launched the most ambitious HIV prevention study in the world; Botswana hosted Southern Accord\, the 1\,400-strong joint SADC-U.S. military exercise; and the U.S. embassy helped to found Botswana’s first American Chamber of Commerce. Prior to that\, she was a special assistant to President Obama and the senior director for Africa at the National Security Council\, where she helped to create the Young African Leaders Initiative and led major policy reviews of Sudan and Somalia. \nPreviously\, Ambassador Gavin was an international affairs fellow and adjunct fellow for Africa at CFR. She has also worked in the U.S. Senate\, where she was the staff director for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Subcommittee on African Affairs\, director of international policy issues for Senator Russ Feingold\, and legislative director for Senator Ken Salazar. \nGavin received an M.Phil in international relations from Oxford University\, where she was a Rhodes scholar\, and earned her B.A. from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service\, where she was a Truman scholar. She serves on the board of directors of Points of Light.
