What are the the implications of this approach for Cuba and Latin America? \nThis program is presented by the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis through a partnership with Global Minnesota. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year. Global Minnesota facilitates the statewide Great Decisions program by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association.  \nGary Prevost\, presenter \nGary Prevost is Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Latin American Studies at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University and Research Associate and Honorary Professor at Nelson Mandela University in South Africa.  He is the author or co-editor of close to twenty books and 100 academic articles on a range of international subjects with a primary focus on Latin America. DESCRIPTION:Due to scheduling changes\, this event and the planned visit by Speaker Norlén have been cancelled. \nSweden’s 250-year relationship with the United States has been defined by exchange and collaboration. With close ties to Minnesota\, this partnership has expanded to fit changing dynamics in world affairs through deepening opportunities for cooperation and Sweden’s NATO accession in 2024. \nJoin Global Minnesota\, the Honorary Consulate of Sweden\, and the American Swedish Institute to celebrate this crucial relationship in a fireside chat with Andreas Norlén\, Sweden’s Speaker of Parliament. Don’t miss this engaging dialogue with one of Sweden’s highest elected officials. \nAbout the Speaker: Andreas Norlén\n \nAndreas Norlén was elected Speaker of the Riksdag in 2018 and served as a member of parliament for Östergötland County for the Moderate Party prior to his election as Speaker. In the Riksdag\, he has been the Chair of the Committee on the Constitution\, a member of the Committee on the Constitution\, a member of the War Delegation\, and an alternate member of the Committee on Justice and of the Advisory Council on Foreign Affairs. \nDuring his years as Chair of the Committee on the Constitution\, Andreas Norlén worked to ensure broad support for the conclusions reached by the Committee regarding scrutiny of ministers of government. Andreas Norlén believes that it is crucial that the Committee on the Constitution should have broad support in the Riksdag and should remain consistent when there is a change in the political majority. He also worked for broad political consensus in matters affecting the Constitution and preventive measures to counteract violent extremism. \nAndreas Norlén is a Doctor of Laws\, having previously been awarded the degree of Master of Commercial and Business Law at Linköping University and Bachelor of Laws at Stockholm University. \nFor many years\, Andreas Norlén has also been active in the family company\, Kurirengruppen i Sverige AB\, which publishes newspapers. From the legacy of the 1947 partition to ongoing tensions along the Line of Control\, Kashmir is an enduring point of regional and international concern. \nFollowing flare-ups in April and May of 2025\, the international community is called to consider the factors that perpetuate this significant divide. Dr. Arijit Mazumdar joins Global Minnesota from the Department of Political Science at the University of St. Thomas to discuss the history and ongoing expectations surrounding Kashmir. \nThis event is being provided for university students preparing for a diplomacy simulation. What is driving this deterioration of Sino-American relations\, and what are America’s strategic options in the face of Chinese power and ambition? \nThis program is presented by Edina Community Ed through a partnership with the Edina Senior Center\, the Edina Library\, the Edina Community Center\, and Global Minnesota. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most timely foreign policy issues facing the United States each year. Global Minnesota facilitates discussion groups across the state\, providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and offering Great Decisions books produced by the Foreign Policy Association. \nRichard Leitch\, presenter \nDr. Richard Leitch earned a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Colby College in 1985\, and an M.A. in Asian Studies from the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign. He then received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Illinois in 1995 and now teaches International Relations\, Comparative Politics\, Asian Politics\, Environmental Politics\, and the Politics of Poverty at Gustavus Adolphus College. Her overseas assignments included Afghanistan\, China\, Mauritania\, Pakistan\, South Africa\, and the United Arab Emirates\, as well as Washington\, DC. Her final assignment was as the U.S. Consul General in Durban\, South Africa. \nOriginally from Minneapolis\, Anne now lives in the Twin Cities where she is involved in a variety of non-profits and regularly lectures around Minnesota on global issues. To satisfy the creative side of her brain\, she also works at a flower shop. \nShe has a B.A. in Urban Studies from the University of Minnesota and a M.S. in National Security Strategy from the National War College in Washington\, DC. From early career breakthroughs in Pakistan to recent coverage in Gaza and Ukraine\, Nick offers a nuanced and personal approach to some of the most pressing issues in international affairs. Street parking is also available. \nSpeaker: Nick Schifrin\nNick Schifrin is PBS News Hour’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Correspondent. He leads News Hour’s daily foreign coverage\, including multiple trips to Ukraine since the full-scale invasion\, and has created weeklong series for the News Hour from nearly a dozen countries. \nThe PBS News Hour series “Inside Putin’s Russia” won a 2017 Peabody Award and the National Press Club’s Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence. In 2020 he received the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Arthur Ross Media Award for Distinguished Reporting and Analysis of Foreign Affairs. He was a member of the News Hour teams awarded a 2021 Peabody for coverage of COVID-19\, and a 2023 DuPont Columbia Award for coverage of Afghanistan and Ukraine. \nPrior to PBS News Hour\, Nick was Al Jazeera America’s Middle East correspondent. He led the channel’s coverage of the 2014 war in Gaza; reported on the Syrian war from Syria’s Turkish\, Lebanese and Jordanian borders; and covered the annexation of Crimea. He won an Overseas Press Club award for his Gaza coverage and a National Headliners Award for his Ukraine coverage. \nFrom 2008-2012\, Nick served as the ABC News correspondent in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In 2011 he was one of the first journalists to arrive in Abbottabad\, Pakistan\, after Osama bin Laden’s death and delivered one of the year’s biggest exclusives: the first video from inside bin Laden’s compound. His reporting helped ABC News win an Edward R. Murrow award for its bin Laden coverage. \nNick is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a board member of the Overseas Press Club Foundation. Learn more about membership benefits here. \nRegister Here \nAbout Tom Hanson\nThomas Hanson is a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State whose diplomatic postings included East Germany\, France\, Norway\, the Soviet Union\, Sweden\, and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.  He also participated in the opening of new U.S. embassies in Mongolia and Estonia\, worked on the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives\, and served as Director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington\, D.C. \nMr. Hanson currently is Diplomat in Residence at the Alworth Institute for International Affairs at the University of Minnesota – Duluth and has taught diplomacy at Carleton College.  He also serves as Chair of the Minnesota Committee on Foreign Relations and as Co-Chair of the Minnesota International Business Council. He is a past board member of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights and Director at the Institute for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (IEECA). Global Minnesota facilitates discussion groups across the state\, providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and offering Great Decisions books produced by the Foreign Policy Association. \nTodd Lefko\, presenter \nTodd is Chairperson of East-West Connections\, an international non-profit focused on citizen diplomacy\, and has taught over 4\,400 students at the University of Minnesota and other Minnesota colleges. He has lectured at universities in Russia\, Germany\, China\, Belarus\, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. He holds a BA in History\, an MA in Public Administration and the coursework for a Ph. Henry is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and is active in a local Great Decisions Group. He has given popular presentations throughout Minnesota on varied topics such as Saudi Arabia\, Future of the Kurds\, Egypt and the Arab Spring\, Syrian Refugee Crisis and the U.S.- Israel relationship.
