SUMMARY:Beach Time at Shady Oak
DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to international and globally-minded students.  \nMinnesota summer is all about lakes and making unforgettable memories\, and this is your chance to enjoy it all with fellow international and globally-minded college students. \nJoin Global Minnesota at Shady Oak Beach\, one of the Twin Cities’ hidden gems and recently named one of the area’s best beaches by the Star Tribune. With 76 feet of soft sandy shoreline and the cool\, clear waters of spring-fed Shady Oak Lake\, it’s the perfect place to enjoy the beauty of the season. \nRegistration includes beach pass (normally $7)\, light snacks\, and refreshing nonalcoholic beverages while supplies last. To stay comfortable\, please remember to bring your own beach towel\, sunscreen\, water bottle\, and any extra snacks you might enjoy. \nSpots are limited and will be filled on a first come\, first served basis. Global Minnesota staff and volunteers will offer car rides to registered students who need one. SUMMARY:Global Conversations: Morocco in Focus
DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to everyone.  \nSince the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1786\, Morocco and the United States have shared the longest unbroken diplomatic relationship in U.S. history. Over the centuries\, this bilateral relationship has grown through collaboration in law enforcement\, joint military training\, and counterterrorism efforts\, as well as cooperation in education\, economic development\, and the strengthening of civil society. \nJoin Global Minnesota and the Landmark Center for a Global Conversation featuring former Chargé d’affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission to the U.S. Embassy in Morocco Matt Lussenhop\, who will share insights on the history\, strategic importance\, and future of the U.S.–Morocco relationship. \nJenni’s Cafe will be open for guests to purchase lunch at the Landmark Center. Bag lunches are also welcome. \nThank you to the Landmark Center for their collaboration on this event. \nRegister \nSpeaker: Matthew Lussenhop\nMatthew Lussenhop served as a Foreign Service Officer from 1990 to 2022. From 2019 until his retirement in 2022\, he worked in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary\, including one year as Acting Assistant Secretary in July 2019. He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Belgium (2016-2019)\, including 18 months as Chargé d’affaires\, and as DCM at the U.S. Embassy to the Kingdom of Morocco\, ten months as the Chargé d’affaires (2013-16). \nMr. Lussenhop served in the fields of public diplomacy and strategic communications in numerous posts overseas\, including Public Affairs Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul\, Afghanistan from 2010-2011. Other overseas assignments include positions at U.S. embassies in Bulgaria\, Kuwait\, Morocco\, Oman\, the Philippines\, and Saudi Arabia. His domestic work in the State Department includes Director of Policy in ECA\, Director of Public Diplomacy Training at the Foreign Service Institute\, and press officer in the Office of Near Eastern and North African Affairs. He retired with the rank of Minister-Counselor and is the recipient of multiple State Department Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards and a Presidential Rank Award.
