SUMMARY:SDG Roundtable: Strategies for a Climate-Resilient World
DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and virtually and is open to everyone. Registration is now closed. Please contact Corporate Relations Officer Steve Jaffee at sjaffee@globalminnesota.org with any questions. \nClimate-driven changes are impacting people\, businesses\, and landscapes–on a global scale. While attention has been placed on reducing the severity of climate change—impacts due to these changes are increasingly observed\, increasingly costly\, and well-documented. Aging built environments and infrastructure may not have been sized for the new realities and/or not easily adapted for future conditions. How must we respond? What actions can we take to better protect people and property to promote climate resilience? What can we learn from our international partners coping with similar changes and challenges? \nMinnesota companies like Barr Engineering Co. regularly help clients understand their vulnerabilities to these risks and develop resilience strategies for their long-term success. \nJoin Global Minnesota on November 14 for our next Sustainable Development Goals Roundtable: Strategies for a Climate-Resilient World. In addition to insights and case studies from Barr Engineering Co.\, you’ll hear from other Minnesota companies learning to pivot in a changing world. \n\nMoody’s will provide an overview of how their physical risk catastrophe models are providing insight into current and future catastrophe risk informing business strategies\, for example\, with wildfire property risk mitigation\, community action and utility management.\nPCL Construction\, builder of our own Mall of America\, will examine how these changes are impacting built environments.\nFollowing the presentations\, there will be time for networking. Online participation will also be offered.\n\nPresentation runs from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with networking until noon. \nIf you require an accommodation\, please contact our Corporate Relations Officer Steve Jaffee at sjaffee@globalminnesota.org. \nCorporate Member Resources: Open the link to see how Global Minnesota corporate members offer expertise\, services\, or technology that can help with your organization’s sustainability goals.

SUMMARY:Edina Great Decisions: Pandemic Preparedness
DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and is open to everyone.  \nResearch has shown that the question is not “if\,” but “when” the next pandemic will occur. Although the previous pandemic seems to have waned\, there are many lessons to learn about what’s needed for a new\, global biosecurity infrastructure\, that mitigates the risks from the next pandemic. How can technology be utilized to support rapid identification and understanding of emerging threats\, such as collecting samples\, analyzing data\, and generating meaningful insights for public health officials and policymakers? \nThis program is presented by Edina Community Ed through a partnership with the Edina Senior Center\, the Edina Library\, and Edina Community Center. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year. Global Minnesota facilitates the statewide Great Decisions program by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association. Great Decisions books contain articles and materials authored by experts on eight topics to provide a nonpartisan basis for understanding the important global issues of our time. A limited number of discounted books are available for purchase by Global Minnesota members and groups ordering ten or more books. Join Global Minnesota and the Friends of the Edina Library at the Edina Community Center for an in-depth discussion of this important topic. \nRick Olson\, presenter \nRick Olson is a retired professional with a variety of educational and life experiences. He has worked as an economist\, an attorney\, a certified financial planner\, an agricultural loan officer\, an agricultural cooperative president\, a State Representative in Michigan and a public-school business manager. He obtained a Juris Doctor degree from Stanford Law School and completed the coursework in two Ph.D. programs (Agricultural Economics and Education Administration). \nSpecial thanks to the Friends of the Edina Library for co-hosting this program. \nIf you would like to register\, please use the button below. \nRegister

The dinner is $25 for Woman’s Club members and $30 for non-members (plus service fee and taxes). \nFor the past ten years\, the United States and China have been locked in a competition for who has the greatest global influence. One major point of contention is the status of Taiwanese sovereignty\, which has become even more relevant recently with the possibility that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may prompt China to take similar action regarding Taiwan. How will the United States engage a China which is increasingly seeking to expand its sphere of influence? \nDuncan McCampbell\, presenter \nDuncan McCampbell is an American lawyer and professor of international business and law at Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis. He spent 14 years—much of it living abroad—with the Westlaw division of Thomson Reuters\, starting new online businesses in the UK\, Germany\, China\, Australia\, Hong Kong and the Netherlands. His professional interests include globalization\, international business\, non-U.S. legal systems\, and corruption prevention. He has served as Co-Chair of the Minnesota China Business Council\, Minnesota’s oldest China business organization. He publishes frequently on global commercial\, legal\, political and security issues. In addition to his writing and teaching\, Prof. McCampbell leads a business consultancy that helps companies enter new overseas markets. Professor McCampbell’s new book on U.S./China relations\, Sunset Over China\, is due to release by the end of the year \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year. SUMMARY:Great Decisions: The Changing World Order
DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. An optional dinner will start at 7:15 following the presentation. The dinner is $25 for Woman’s Club members and $30 for non-members (plus service fee and taxes). \nFollowing the collapse of the Soviet Union\, the United States emerged as a lone superpower leading a unipolar world. President George H.W. Bush proclaimed a New World Order to be marked by peace\, prosperity\, and liberal democracy. \nThirty years later we live in a very different world. The United States\, while still a major power with the world’s largest military\, must navigate a multi-polar world and significant new challenges. First and foremost is the rise of China whose economy is now on par with the U.S. and is flexing its influence throughout the world as it seeks natural resources and markets for its goods. However\, China is not alone as a rising power. \nThe BRICS nations\, Brazil\, Russia\, India\, China\, and South Africa\, are increasingly influential international players and often have different interests and values than the U.S. American leadership in the world is also in question with significant portions of the U.S. electorate wanting more focus on domestic issues and less attention to foreign affairs. What could be the role of the U.S. in this changing world order? \nGary Prevost\, presenter \nGary Prevost is Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Latin American Studies at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University and Research Associate and Honorary Professor at Nelson Mandela University in South Africa.  He is the author or co-editor of close to twenty books and 100 academic articles on a range of international subjects with a primary focus on Latin America. He has taught courses on international relations for fifty years and is regular lecturer in the Great Decisions program of Global Minnesota. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year.
