SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: Putin's Re-election - Stability or Stagnation?
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nThis Global Conversations is presented in partnership with the Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. \nVladimir Putin’s March 2018 re-election victory was never in doubt. Now that he’s officially back in power\, where is he headed? Will he move forward with the economic reform he touts in theory\, but ignores in practice? Will he slip backward into Brezhnev-style stagnation? Will his supporters stick with him\, in his 18th year at the center of power? \nJoin speaker Jill Dougherty\, Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center and former Moscow bureau chief and correspondent for CNN\, for a thought-provoking evening as she discusses the future of Russian foreign policy and power in the region. \nAbout the Speaker\nJill Dougherty is an expert on Russia and the former Soviet Union. In her three-decade career with CNN\, she served as a Foreign Affairs Correspondent based in Washington\, D.C.\, where she covered the U.S. Department of State and provided analysis on international issues. Previously\, Dougherty served as U.S. Affairs Editor for CNN International; Managing Editor of CNN International Asia/Pacific\, based in Hong Kong; and CNN’s Moscow Bureau Chief and Correspondent. She also served as CNN White House Correspondent\, covering the presidencies of George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton\, and was a Fellow at the Shorenstein Center on Media\, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government where she pursued research on Russia’s mass media. Dougherty received a bachelor’s degree in Slavic languages and literature from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor and a master’s from Georgetown University where she researched Russia’s soft power diplomacy. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is produced in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library.

SUMMARY:Mexico and the U.S. at a Crossroad with Ambassador Gutiérrez

On the political front\, he worked as part of President-elect Vicente Fox’s transition team. Additionally\, he has contributed editorials to several Mexican and U.S. newspapers and magazines and regularly participates as a keynote speaker at conferences related to U.S.-Mexico relations\, border affairs\, and international business. SUMMARY:Global Conversations: The Waning of Pax Americana
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nThe U.S. has begun a historic shift away from Pax Americana\, the liberal international order that was established in the wake of World War II. Since 1945\, Pax Americana has sought peaceful international relations and an open economy\, buttressed by U.S. military power. In championing “America First” isolationism and protectionism\, President Trump has shifted the political direction toward selective U.S. engagement\, where foreign commitments are limited to areas of vital U.S. interest and economic nationalism is the order of the day. \nJoin the conversation with former U.S. Foreign Service Officer\, Tom Hanson\, as he examines what this shift means for U.S. geopolitics and foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nTom Hanson currently serves as Diplomat in Residence at the Alworth Institute for International Affairs at the University of Minnesota – Duluth. He is a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer whose postings included East Germany\, France\, Norway\, the Soviet Union\, Sweden\, and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. He also participated in the opening of new U.S. embassies in Mongolia and Estonia\, worked on the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives\, and served as director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington\, D.C. A member of Global Minnesota’s Great Decisions advisory committee\, Tom speaks frequently on international issues and contributes to local and international media. He is also a board member of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights\, the International Leadership Program at the University of St. Thomas\, and the Cultural Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Minnesota – Duluth. Tom holds a BA degree from the University of Minnesota and graduate degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy; the Institute of Advanced International Studies in Switzerland; and the National School of Administration in France. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is presented in partnership with the Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations: U.S. Global Engagement and the Military
DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out. Online registration is closed.  \nThe global power balance is rapidly evolving\, leaving the United States at a turning point with respect to its level of engagement and the role of its military. Some argue for an “America First” paradigm\, with a large military to ensure security\, while others call for a more assertive posture overseas. Some advocate for a restoration of American multilateral leadership and a strengthened role for diplomacy. Still\, others envision a restrained U.S. role\, involving a more limited military. \nJoin us for a conversation with retired U.S. Navy Commander Jon Olson on how the military functions in today’s international order\, and how might it be balanced with diplomatic and foreign assistance capabilities. \nAbout the Speaker\nJon Olson served as a U.S. Naval Intelligence Officer before retiring in 2011 at the rank of commander. During his 21-year naval career\, Jon’s assignments included duty aboard aircraft carriers and large deck amphibious ships\, numerous international operations including to Iraq\, Bosnia\, and Afghanistan\, and service in the U.S. Navy strategic-level clandestine Human Intelligence collection operations as a CIA-trained case officer. He also qualified as a U.S. Navy parachutist\, logging 35 jumps. Jon’s final assignment before retirement was as the U.S. Naval Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki\, Finland. Since retiring\, Jon has co-authored several novels and short stories\, and a feature-length screenplay about the Falklands War named\, “A Close Run Thing.” Currently\, Jon is an adjunct professor at Carleton College and in the School of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice at Metropolitan State University. He also serves as president of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association – Upper Midwest Chapter. Jon holds a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is presented in partnership with the Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central and the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: North Korea – Fire and Fury or Dialogue and Diplomacy?
DESCRIPTION:Online registration closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nLess than a year after threatening to unleash “Fire and Fury” on North Korea\, President Trump became the first U.S. President to meet with a North Korean leader\, speaking warmly of the “special bond” he shared with Kim Jong Un and expressing their mutual desire to “leave the past behind.” Does this new diplomatic opening represent a real opportunity for a denuclearized North Korea and for an official end to the Korean War? Or is the U.S. being played by Kim Jong Un in an attempt to permanently establish North Korea as a nuclear power with the ability to threaten the U.S. at will? And what role do our allies and other great powers – including China and Russia – have to play in this high-stakes diplomatic overture? \nJoin us for a conversation with former Cultural Affairs Officer Mark Canning as he discusses the future of U.S.-North Korea relations. \nAbout the Speaker\nOriginally from Minnesota and a former competitive cyclist\, Mark Canning is a retired U.S. diplomat where he served for several decades with the U.S. Department of State. His most recent posting was at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul\, South Korea\, as Cultural Affairs Officer. During his career\, Mark served in Warsaw\, Poland\, when the Berlin Wall came down and in Johannesburg\, South Africa\, during the end of apartheid. Fluent in Mandarin\, Mark also spent three years at the Consulate in Guangzhou\, China\, and four years in Taiwan. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University and completed coursework in the MBA program at the University of Washington before joining the U.S. Department of State. Currently\, Mark teaches Chinese at Concordia Language Village camps. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is presented in partnership with Landmark Center.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: South Africa's Fragile Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Online registration closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nThe African National Congress (ANC) party has governed South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994. But the party today suffers from popular frustration over official corruption and economic stagnation. It faces growing threats from both left and right opposition parties\, even as intraparty divisions surface. Given America’s history of opportunistic engagement with Africa\, there are few prospects for a closer relationship between the two countries. Meanwhile\, a weaker ANC could lead to political fragmentation in this relatively new democracy. \nJoin us for a discussion with former Ambassador to Liberia Linda Thomas-Greenfield on the global role of South Africa and its future relations with the U.S. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Thomas-Greenfield is a Senior Counselor at Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG) where she draws on her distinguished career as a U.S. diplomat to help clients of ASG’s Africa practice. Previously\, she served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs\, where she led U.S. policy toward sub-Saharan Africa and as Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources\, where she oversaw all personnel functions for the U.S. Department of State’s 70\,000-strong workforce. A career diplomat\, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield also served as U.S. Ambassador to Liberia\, and was posted to Switzerland\, Pakistan\, Kenya\, The Gambia\, Nigeria\, and Jamaica. Her Washington postings include the Bureau of African Affairs and the Bureau of Population\, Refugees and Migration. Prior to joining the U.S. Department of State\, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield taught political science at Bucknell University. She has a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University\, a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin\, and has been honored with several awards including the Hubert Humphrey Public Leadership Award\, the Bishop John T. Walker Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award\, and the Warren Christopher Award for Outstanding Achievement in Global Affairs. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield is a Distinguished Resident Fellow in African Affairs at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is presented in partnership with Landmark Center.

SUMMARY:Culture Through Cuisine: Mexican Tamales and Holiday Traditions
DESCRIPTION:This event is SOLD OUT. \nA traditional dish found across Latin America\, tamales have origins that date back to the Aztecs and Mayas. Today\, the largest varieties of tamales are found in Mexico\, with flavors varying by region. But no matter how they are made or what they are filled with\, tamales symbolize more than just a meal. Passed down through generations\, the art of making tamales reflects the value of family\, nourishment\, and collectiveness. And although they are made all year long\, tamales have come to embody the holiday spirit of “togetherness.” \nJoin us for a special Culture Through Cuisine at El Burrito Minneapolis as we explore the long-cherished tradition of Mexican tamales\, specifically those made for the holidays. The evening will feature a tamal-making demo by Milissa Silva-Diaz\, owner and CEO of El Burrito Mercado\, and a three-course dinner including chicken tamales with green tomatillo sauce (tamales oaxaqueños)\, pork tamales in red sauce\, vegetarian tamales with poblano chile and cheese (rajas con queso)\, and sweet dessert tamales (tamales dulces). We’ll also hear from Consul of Mexico Gerardo Guerrero\, on Mexican holiday traditions. \nRegistration includes dinner\, traditional holiday punch (ponche)\, tax\, and gratuity. A cash bar will be available. Advance registration required. \nAbout Consul Guerrero\nThe fourth Consul of Mexico in St. Paul\, Gerardo Guerrero has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1987 and joined the Diplomatic Corps in 1997.
