SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: South Africa's Fragile Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Online registration closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nThe African National Congress (ANC) party has governed South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994. But the party today suffers from popular frustration over official corruption and economic stagnation. It faces growing threats from both left and right opposition parties\, even as intraparty divisions surface. Given America’s history of opportunistic engagement with Africa\, there are few prospects for a closer relationship between the two countries. Meanwhile\, a weaker ANC could lead to political fragmentation in this relatively new democracy. \nJoin us for a discussion with former Ambassador to Liberia Linda Thomas-Greenfield on the global role of South Africa and its future relations with the U.S. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Thomas-Greenfield is a Senior Counselor at Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG) where she draws on her distinguished career as a U.S. diplomat to help clients of ASG’s Africa practice. Previously\, she served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs\, where she led U.S. policy toward sub-Saharan Africa and as Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources\, where she oversaw all personnel functions for the U.S. Department of State’s 70\,000-strong workforce. A career diplomat\, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield also served as U.S. Ambassador to Liberia\, and was posted to Switzerland\, Pakistan\, Kenya\, The Gambia\, Nigeria\, and Jamaica. Her Washington postings include the Bureau of African Affairs and the Bureau of Population\, Refugees and Migration. Prior to joining the U.S. Department of State\, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield taught political science at Bucknell University. She has a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University\, a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin\, and has been honored with several awards including the Hubert Humphrey Public Leadership Award\, the Bishop John T. Walker Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award\, and the Warren Christopher Award for Outstanding Achievement in Global Affairs. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield is a Distinguished Resident Fellow in African Affairs at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is presented in partnership with Landmark Center.

Conventional journalism now competes with user-generated content. Official channels of communication can be circumvented through social media. Foreign policy is tweeted from the White House and “fake news” has entered the zeitgeist. Cyberwarfare\, hacking and misinformation pose complex security threats. What are the implications for U.S. policy? \nJoin us as we examine these questions and more with keynote speaker Susan D. Moeller\, Professor of Media and International Affairs at the University of Maryland\, College Park\, and author of the Great Decisions article on media and foreign policy. We’ll also hear from former U.S. Foreign Service Officer Tom Hanson\, who will discuss how foreign policy is shaped and shared in the era of “Twitter Diplomacy\,” and from Mary Stucky\, Founder and Executive Director of Round Earth Media. Finally\, two dozen international journalists with the U.S. Department of State’s Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists will attend the conference and provide unique perspectives from countries as varied as Albania\, Brazil\, Ethiopia\, New Zealand\, Thailand\, and South Africa. \nDon’t miss our post-election analysis of an issue that affects the quality of information that shapes the foreign-policy decisions of leaders and citizens\, around the world and right here in Minnesota. \nRegistration includes continental breakfast. \nConference Agenda\nCheck out information on featured speakers and agenda details. \nPresented in partnership with the Foreign Policy Association and the University of Minnesota Hubbard School of Journalism & Mass Communication.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: Global Health - Progress and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nThe collective action of countries\, communities\, and organizations over the last 30 years has saved millions of lives around the world. Yet inequalities in health and wellbeing persist. The world now faces a mix of old and new health challenges\, including the preventable deaths of mothers and children\, continuing epidemics of infectious diseases\, and rising rates of chronic disease. We also remain vulnerable to the emergence of new and deadly pandemics. Her technical training is in health systems and economics with specific focus on HIV/AIDS\, women’s health\, and impact measurement. SUMMARY:Culture Through Cuisine: Mexican Tamales and Holiday Traditions
DESCRIPTION:This event is SOLD OUT. \nA traditional dish found across Latin America\, tamales have origins that date back to the Aztecs and Mayas. Today\, the largest varieties of tamales are found in Mexico\, with flavors varying by region. But no matter how they are made or what they are filled with\, tamales symbolize more than just a meal. The evening will feature a tamal-making demo by Milissa Silva-Diaz\, owner and CEO of El Burrito Mercado\, and a three-course dinner including chicken tamales with green tomatillo sauce (tamales oaxaqueños)\, pork tamales in red sauce\, vegetarian tamales with poblano chile and cheese (rajas con queso)\, and sweet dessert tamales (tamales dulces). We’ll also hear from Consul of Mexico Gerardo Guerrero\, on Mexican holiday traditions. \nRegistration includes dinner\, traditional holiday punch (ponche)\, tax\, and gratuity. A cash bar will be available. Advance registration required. \nAbout Consul Guerrero\nThe fourth Consul of Mexico in St. Paul\, Gerardo Guerrero has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1987 and joined the Diplomatic Corps in 1997. Consul Guerrero served as an attorney in several legal offices within the Ministry\, as well as at the Consulate in New York. SUMMARY:CARE Forum: Food\, Health\, and Women in International Development
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now closed but walk-ins are welcome!\n \nThis Women’s Food Security In International Development program takes place in St. Cloud. \nWomen are key to international development. Empowering women through health care\, education\, and finance results in better lives for themselves\, their families\, and communities. But what happens when people are unable to provide basic nutrition for their families? Women\, in particular\, are prevented from performing the economic and social activities that would otherwise lift their families from poverty\, causing further dependence rather than self-sufficiency and prosperity. \nJoin us for a presentation and discussion in honor of International Women’s Day on the great challenges for millions of women and their families to obtain enough nutritious food. We’ll hear from U.S. Representative Tom Emmer; Dr. Robbyn Wacker\, President of St. Cloud State University; a representative from CARE; Jeff Dykstra from Partners in Food Solutions; and Louise Iverson from the General Mills Foundation. \nPresented in partnership with CARE\, CARE Action!\,  Minnesota International NGO Network (MINN)\, and St. Cloud State University.

SUMMARY:Saving the Majestic Rhino: Conservation Challenges and Successes Across South Africa
DESCRIPTION:For members and their guests only.  \nHome to more than 20\,000 rhinoceroses\, South Africa has one of the largest rhino populations in the world. However\, threats from poaching\, habitat loss\, and political conflict continuously endanger the rhino species\, pushing them toward extinction. \nAs we continue our yearlong focus on South Africa\, join us for a special discussion with Nicole Benjamin-Fink\, wildlife biologist and founder of Conservation Beyond Borders\, on the work being done across political and geographic boundaries to engage communities in the socioeconomic implications of policies that endanger the rhino. \nAbout the Speaker\nNicole Benjamin-Fink is a wildlife biologist and the Director and Founder of Conservation Beyond Borders\, an organization that resolves human-wildlife conflict across Africa and Asia. Nicole provides science-based strategies to international\, national\, and regional decision makers\, and applies economic theory to save endangered species in their habitat. Her research highlights the importance of local capacity building\, as well as integrating indigenous people into the conservation process. Nicole applies game theory and Bayesian statistics to address rhino poaching concerns across Africa and India\, and has conducted research in South America\, Southern Africa\, West Africa\, and India. Nicole founded Conservation Beyond Borders as a platform to provide conceptual and applicable solutions to transboundary conservation challenges. \nThis event is for Global Minnesota members only.
