SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: Women in International Development
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nOver the last decade\, there have been tremendous gains in women’s global economic empowerment\, with more women becoming entrepreneurs and gaining access to financial and other vital services. Yet\, challenges remain\, including an increase in global hunger and malnutrition in the last several years. \nJoin us for a discussion with Lauren Hendricks\, Executive Vice President for Program Strategy and Institutional Relations at Grameen Foundation\, on how we can create new opportunities for women around the world by closing gender gaps in access to financial services\, digital technology\, and productive assets\, and by strengthening women’s decision-making power in their homes and communities. \nThe evening will also include a panel presentation by international women entrepreneurs from around the world including Afghanistan\, Italy\, Jamaica\, and Serbia\, who will share their stories and experiences. These visitors will be in Minnesota as part of our Professional Exchanges program and participants in the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. \nFollowing the program\, all attendees are invited to a reception to meet the international visitors and speakers. \nAbout Lauren Hendricks\n\n\n\n\n\nLauren Hendricks is the Executive Vice President for Program Strategy and Institutional Relations at Grameen Foundation. Previously\, she was Executive Director for the Access Africa initiative at CARE\, where she led the development of financial inclusion programs and innovative solutions to reach the poorest people in Africa. Lauren also served as Director of the Economic Development Unit for CARE USA\, where she provided strategic direction and technical leadership for more than 100 active microfinance and enterprise development programs in 54 countries. Before joining CARE\, Lauren was a Program Specialist at the Center for Institutional Reform and the Informal Sector at the University of Maryland. Her research focused on the development of low-cost tools to assess the poverty outreach of USAID funded microenterprise development programs. Lauren currently serves on the Board of Directors and Investment Committee for MicroVest\, a capital management firm investing in microfinance institutions. She also chairs the board of the Access Africa Fund\, a specialized investment fund managed by MicroVest\, providing debt and equity investments in African microfinance institutions. \n\n\n\n\n\nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is presented in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library\, Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central\, and Minnesota International NGO Network (MINN). \n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto courtesy of Grameen Foundation.

SUMMARY:CARE Forum: Food\, Health\, and Women in International Development
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now closed but walk-ins are welcome!\n \nThis Women’s Food Security In International Development program takes place in St. Cloud. \nWomen are key to international development. Empowering women through health care\, education\, and finance results in better lives for themselves\, their families\, and communities. But what happens when people are unable to provide basic nutrition for their families? Women\, in particular\, are prevented from performing the economic and social activities that would otherwise lift their families from poverty\, causing further dependence rather than self-sufficiency and prosperity. \nJoin us for a presentation and discussion in honor of International Women’s Day on the great challenges for millions of women and their families to obtain enough nutritious food. We’ll hear from U.S. Representative Tom Emmer; Dr. Robbyn Wacker\, President of St. Cloud State University; a representative from CARE; Jeff Dykstra from Partners in Food Solutions; and Louise Iverson from the General Mills Foundation. \nPresented in partnership with CARE\, CARE Action!\,  Minnesota International NGO Network (MINN)\, and St. Cloud State University.

SUMMARY:Saving the Majestic Rhino: Conservation Challenges and Successes Across South Africa
DESCRIPTION:For members and their guests only.  \nHome to more than 20\,000 rhinoceroses\, South Africa has one of the largest rhino populations in the world. However\, threats from poaching\, habitat loss\, and political conflict continuously endanger the rhino species\, pushing them toward extinction. \nAs we continue our yearlong focus on South Africa\, join us for a special discussion with Nicole Benjamin-Fink\, wildlife biologist and founder of Conservation Beyond Borders\, on the work being done across political and geographic boundaries to engage communities in the socioeconomic implications of policies that endanger the rhino. \nAbout the Speaker\nNicole Benjamin-Fink is a wildlife biologist and the Director and Founder of Conservation Beyond Borders\, an organization that resolves human-wildlife conflict across Africa and Asia. Nicole provides science-based strategies to international\, national\, and regional decision makers\, and applies economic theory to save endangered species in their habitat. Her research highlights the importance of local capacity building\, as well as integrating indigenous people into the conservation process. Nicole applies game theory and Bayesian statistics to address rhino poaching concerns across Africa and India\, and has conducted research in South America\, Southern Africa\, West Africa\, and India. Nicole founded Conservation Beyond Borders as a platform to provide conceptual and applicable solutions to transboundary conservation challenges. \nThis event is for Global Minnesota members only. SUMMARY:Global Conversations: A Rwandan Story of Healing and Forgiveness
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nIn 1994 over the span of 100 days\, nearly a million Tutsi were killed in Rwanda. After finding personal healing and forgiveness\, author Denise Uwimana turned her extraordinary experience as a survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide into a personal mission to provide material and spiritual assistance to fellow survivors. To mark the 25th commemoration of the genocide\, Denise recently released the moving memoir “From Red Earth: A Rwandan Story of Healing and Forgiveness\,” where she recounts her story of survival and continuing efforts to restore her country by empowering Rwandans to band together\, find healing\, share their stories\, and rebuild their lives. \nJoin us for a special program with Denise as she shares her testimony and discusses Rwanda’s turbulent history and the projects and programs established to promote healing\, renovation\, and community building in the region. The evening will include a Q&A session. \nFollowing the program\, Denise will sign copies of her book “From Red Earth: A Rwandan Story of Healing and Forgiveness\,” which can be purchased through Amazon\, Barnes & Noble\, or IndieBound\, and will be available for purchase at the event through Magers & Quinn Booksellers. \nAbout the Speaker\nSakina Denise Uwimana-Reinhardt was born to Rwandan immigrant parents in Burundi. She later moved to Rwanda\, where she met her husband\, Charles. When she was 29\, she survived the Rwandan genocide of 1994 with her three sons; however\, her husband was killed. For the past three decades\, Denise has worked for Iriba Shalom International\, a charitable organization she co-founded to help Rwandans gain new perspectives by promoting reconciliation and forgiveness\, and she recently released her memoir “From Red Earth: A Rwandan Story of Healing and Forgiveness.” Denise remarried and now lives with her husband\, Dr. Wolfgang Reinhardt\, in Germany. Together they continue to work for healing in Rwanda. \nPresented in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library\, Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central\, and World Without Genocide. \nPhoto credit: Denise Uwimana

SUMMARY:The Future We Want: The UN We Need
DESCRIPTION:This event is SOLD OUT. \nIn the coming years\, global issues such as climate change\, poverty and inequality\, migration and displacement\, and rapid changes in demography and technology will require cooperation across borders\, sectors\, and generations. The United Nations’ interconnected Sustainable Development Goals help address these global challenges and provide the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. But while collective action is needed\, the disconnect between people and institutions grows and multilateralism is being called into question. \nThis year marks the 75th anniversary of the UN\, which will inspire dialogues across the globe to collect diverse perspectives and creative ideas on what is needed to address emerging risks and opportunities and to navigate the gap between the world we want and where we are headed. \nJust in time for UN Day and to help kick off the 75th anniversary of the UN\, join us for a special reception and presentation by Stéphane Dujarric\, Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The evening will also include a Q&A session with Stephane and time for networking. \nAbout the Speaker\nStéphane Dujarric is the Spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and also served as Spokesman for United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Deputy Communications Director for Secretary-General Ban Kimoon. Prior to his current appointment\, Stéphane was Director of News and Media for the United Nations Department of Public Information\, where he oversaw the UN’s television\, radio\, and photo operations\, and coordinated the work of the main United Nations news sites\, operating in eight languages. His News and Media Division was responsible for media liaison and accreditation\, providing logistical support and information to the international press corps\, as well as coverage of official United Nations meetings\, producing written coverage for the media\, delegations and the general public. Prior to joining the United Nations\, Stéphane worked for ABC News television for close to ten years in various capacities in the network’s New York City\, London\, and Paris news bureaus. He traveled extensively on assignment to cover major stories throughout Europe\, Africa\, and the Middle East. Born in France\, Stéphane has been living in the United States for the most part of the last 40 years and is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. \nPresented in partnership with Citizens for Global Solutions Minnesota and the United Nations Association of Minnesota.

SUMMARY:Culture Through Cuisine: Italian Aperitivo
DESCRIPTION:This program is SOLD OUT. \nThere is no better way to explore our Year of Italy than indulging in one of the cornerstones of Italian culture: its cuisine. Although Italy is home to a variety of regional culinary variations\, quality and simplicity of ingredients are common threads that link the Tuscan countryside to Sicilian coastlines. Whether it’s pasta alla norma\, pesce\, focaccia\, tiramisu\, or of course\, pizza\, Italy’s rich culinary tradition is interpreted and enjoyed around the world. \nSince opening in 2016\, Italian Eatery\, or ie\, has quickly become a fixture in South Minneapolis\, offering a fresh take on Italian cuisine rooted in seasonal and local ingredients. Italian Eatery’s ambiance captures the warmth of a rustic Umbrian farmhouse\, and the 10\,000 corks that line the dining room walls are a testament to the devotion and passion of owners Vanessa and Eric Carrara. \nJoin us for a special Culture Through Cuisine at the Italian Eatery as we experience the traditional Italian Aperitivo (happy hour). The evening will consist of heavy hors d’oeuvres of charcuterie and cheese\, roman meatballs\, short ribs\, calamari fritti\, bacon-wrapped dates\, bruschetta\, and tiramisu. Guests will also receive one complimentary craft cocktail of their choice. \nRegistration includes food\, non-alcoholic beverages\, tax\, and gratuity. Advance registration and prepayment required. \nEvent vouchers accepted. To register with a voucher\, please call us at 612.625.1662. You must bring voucher(s) to the event to redeem. \nPhoto credit: Italian Eatery \nPresented in partnership with the Italian Cultural Center of Minneapolis/St. Paul.
