DESCRIPTION:One of Global Minnesota’s key programs is our professional exchanges program. As part of this\, we welcome people from around the world to Minnesota to share ideas and best practices with their professional counterparts here to effect real change. The topics explored are as diverse as the visitors themselves\, who find their way to Minnesota through a variety of international exchange programs. This past year\, Global Minnesota partnered with more than 435 local professional resources to arrange appointments for more than 300 visitors from 137 countries and regions. One such program is the Young Leaders of the America’s Initiative. This State Department program empowers young entrepreneurs to strengthen their capacity to launch and advance their ideas and effectively contribute to social and economic development in their home communities. \nOn this episode\, hear from one of last year’s YLAI Fellows who recently returned to Minnesota to showcase his new projects as part of the State Department’s Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund. Leorian Ricardo is Creative Director at Moro Studio\, an arts and publishing studio that is leading the development of the comic book industry and providing professional opportunities for young talent and new\, underrepresented voices in the Dominican Republic. He shared his comic book workshops called “Be the Superhero of Your Own Story” at local schools including Gideon Pond Elementary\, Nova Classical Academy\, and Risen Christ Catholic School and spoke with next generation creators at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. This free event is being held in-person and virtually and is open to everyone.  \nDiplomacy is vital to protecting Americans at home and abroad\, advancing the nation’s security interests\, and opening markets for American goods. However\, this critical resource requires reinvestment and modernization to meet the rising challenge of changing geo-political landscapes and priorities. Central to achieving that objective is enhancing the professional capacity of America’s diplomats to maximize the promotion of U.S. national interests. \nWhile the State Department’s footprint has grown from 41 diplomatic posts throughout the world in 1900 to more than 270 missions today\, the need to increase the ability to hire and retain the highest quality individuals continues. In a dynamic and significantly connected world\, what does our nation need from those representing us on the diplomatic front? How can the diplomatic corps be prepared for future opportunities and unexpected disruptions?  Join Global Minnesota for a conversation with Ambassador and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Ronald Neumann about his recommendations to modernize America’s diplomacy. Ambassador Neumann will share his personal insights and provide a behind-the-scenes look at diplomacy from his long career representing the United States. Neumann served three times as Ambassador; to Algeria\, Bahrain and finally to Afghanistan from July 2005 to April 2007. Before Afghanistan\, Mr. Neumann\, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service\, served in Baghdad from February 2004 with the Coalition Provisional Authority and then as Embassy Baghdad’s liaison with the Multinational Command\, where he was deeply involved in coordinating the political part of military actions. \nPrior to working in Iraq\, he was Ambassador in Manama\, Bahrain (2001-2004)\, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Near East Affairs (1997-2000) with responsibility for North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula\, and Ambassador to Algeria (1994 to 1997). He was Director of the Office of Northern Gulf Affairs (Iran and Iraq; 1991 to 1994). Earlier in his career\, he was Deputy Chief of Mission in Abu Dhabi\, United Arab Emirates\, and in Sanaa in Yemen\, Principal Officer in Tabriz\, Iran and Economic/Commercial Officer in Dakar\, Senegal. His previous Washington assignments include service as Jordan Desk officer\, Staff Assistant in the Middle East (NEA) Bureau\, and Political Officer in the Office of Southern European Affairs. \nAmbassador Neumann serves as the President at the American Academy of Diplomacy where he has focused particularly on efforts to maintain adequate State and USAID budgets and staffing and upgrade professional formation to enable these institutions to carry out their responsibilities. He is on the Advisory Board of a non-profit girls’ school in Afghanistan\, the School of Leadership\, Afghanistan (SOLA) and the Advisory Board of Spirit of America. He is on the board of the Middle East Policy Council and the Advisory Council of the World Affairs Councils of America. SUMMARY:Cyprus in Context with Ambassador Doherty
DESCRIPTION:This event is AT CAPACITY.  Please reach out to our Events Manager Katie Kelley at kkelley@globalminnesota.org with any questions.  \nIn 1960\, Cyprus became independent from the United Kingdom\, but its early years were marked by violence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The United Nations established a buffer zone in 1964 to diffuse rising tensions. Ten years later\, after a Greece-sponsored coup in Cyprus\, Turkey sent thousands of troops to the island\, citing its right as a guarantor power to do so. Nearly 200\,000 Greek Cypriots living in the northern part of the island were forced or fled to the south; 60\,000 Turkish Cypriots living in the south did the same to the north. The island and the capital city of Nicosia have been divided since then\, despite international attempts to reunify Cyprus. U.N. troops remain to protect the peace\, but periodic flare-ups of violence have occurred as recently as August 2023. Join Global Minnesota for a conversation with former U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus\, Kathleen Doherty. \nDue to its location in the Eastern Mediterranean\, Turkey\, Greece\, the United Kingdom\, Russia\, the United States and increasingly Israel and China see Cyprus as having strategic geopolitical importance. The island is also known as a favored investment spot\, including illicit finance of Russia\, China\, and others; and now has the highest percentage per capita of refugees in Europe. Given all of these dimensions\, is there a diplomatic path forward for a long-term solution? Ambassador Doherty will outline the current status of the Cyprus issue\, the obstacles to establishing a permanent solution\, and how diplomacy can play a critical role in mediating these tensions. \nAbout Ambassador Doherty:\nAmbassador Doherty served in Cyprus from 2015-2019. Before her appointment as Ambassador\, Kathleen Doherty\, a member of the Senior Foreign Service\, served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Rome between September 2013 and September 2015. She previously spent two years as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs\, where she had responsibility for managing relations with the European Union and Western Europe. Prior to that\, she was the Director for the Office of European Union and Regional Affairs. \nBefore returning to Washington D.C. in 2010\, she was Counselor for Economic Affairs in the U.S. Embassy in London. Her other overseas assignments include Moscow\, Rome and the Dominican Republic. \nAmbassador Doherty speaks Italian and Spanish and previously Portuguese and Russian\, and received one of the Department’s highest honors for her work on U.S.-EU relations. She has a M.Sc from the London School of Economics and a B.A. from Colgate University. SUMMARY:Great Decisions: Global Economic Warfare
DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. An optional dinner will start at 7:15 following the presentation. The dinner is $25 for Woman’s Club members and $30 for non-members (plus service fee and taxes). \nHow useful are sanctions and economic coercion in today’s financial environment? Hear about specific examples of economic warfare measures (i.e.\, sanctions\, trade embargoes\, travel restrictions\, cyber attacks) taken by the U.S. and other countries\, their effectiveness\, and their impacts on the lives of citizens in targeted countries. This presentation will explore the theory behind implementing sanctions and will examine the decision-making process used in adopting economic warfare in the U.S. It will also encourage discussion around the question: Should countries always be left with the choice between outright war or the adoption of sanctions\, or are other policy alternatives worth considering? \nThis program is presented by the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis and is open to ALL. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses several of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year and serves as the focal text for discussion groups across the country. Global Minnesota facilitates one of the largest statewide Great Decisions programs in the country by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association. Shortly after graduating from Carleton College in 1966\, he became part of a private NGO team that created some of Latin America’s first microfinance institutions. Building on that experience\, he began a decades-long business career that kept him active throughout Latin America\, Central America\, Mexico\,\nand the Caribbean. \nIn recent years\, Rob has served on many boards including serving as Board Chair for Global Minnesota and President of Minnesota-Uruguay Partners of the Americas. McCampbell is an American lawyer and associate professor of international business and law at Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis. Following a career in private law practice\, Prof. McCampbell joined West Publishing (now Thomson Reuters Legal)\, the world’s largest legal publisher. His work—much of it overseas—involved building new legal publishing businesses in the UK\, Germany\, Spain\, Switzerland\, the Netherlands\, Canada\, Hong Kong\, and Australia. Ambassador Ayalde will delve into critical topics concerning U.S. policy towards Latin America and the Caribbean. Ambassador Ayalde has held senior leadership positions at the U.S. State Department and USAID\, and at the United States Southern Command\, and will provide insights into the region’s challenges and opportunities. These include migration and the U.S. southern border\, human rights\, economic and political development\, and Chinese involvement in Latin America. \n\nAbout Ambassador Ayalde\nAmbassador Ayalde retired from the U.S. Foreign Service following a distinguished 38-year career. She held senior positions in the Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)\, dedicating her diplomatic service to foreign affairs\, development\, defense\, and security in Latin America and the Caribbean. Ambassador Ayalde served as the Civilian Deputy to the Commander and Foreign Policy Advisor at the United States Southern Command in Miami until September 2019 and was appointed as the U.S. Ambassador to the Federative Republic of Brazil between 2013-2016. Prior to this appointment she served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs in the Department of State. She was also the Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Latin American and Caribbean Bureau for USAID. Following her assignment as USAID Mission Director in Colombia\, where she had responsibility for the development assistance portfolio under Plan Colombia\, she was confirmed as the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Paraguay. She also held assignments in Bangladesh\, Guatemala\, Nicaragua\, and Bolivia. \nAmbassador Ayalde is currently a senior advisor for the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)\, and serves on several boards such as the Wilson Center’s Latin American Program\, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and IREX\, a non-profit organization focused on development\, governance and education. She is a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy and serves on the International Advisory Group of Global Americans. She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards\, including USAID’s Distinguished Career Award\, the Department of State’s Distinguished Service Honor Award\, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s Joint Distinguished Civilian Service Award\, the highest award given to a civilian by the Department of Defense. She was also honored with recognitions by governments in countries she served\, including the Order of San Carlos by the Government of Colombia\, the Order for Gran Cruz by the Government of Paraguay\, and received several recognitions by the Government of Brazil. Ambassador Ayalde earned her B.A. from the School of International Studies at American University in Washington\, D.C. and a M.P.H. from Tulane University in Louisiana. SUMMARY:Great Decisions: Famine in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. An optional dinner will start at 7:15 following the presentation. The dinner is $25 for Woman’s Club members and $30 for non-members (plus service fee and taxes). \nFears of global food shortages have followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, which has disrupted grain shipments from the major grain producer. But what about countries and regions that were suffering before this impending shortage? How is famine defined\, and how is it different from simple food shortages? What\, if any\, remedies are there? \nThis program is presented by the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis and is open to ALL. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses several of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year and serves as the focal text for discussion groups across the country. Global Minnesota facilitates one of the largest statewide Great Decisions programs in the country by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association. Join Global Minnesota and the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis for an in-depth discussion of this important topic. \nEmily Miller\, presenter \nEmily Miller is an experienced international development and humanitarian practitioner. She served as Senior Program Coordinator of a two year study in Karamoja\, Uganda led by the Feinstein International Center (with funding from the World Bank); and Program Manager for Monitoring and Evaluation\, Accountability & Learning (MEAL) with Catholic Relief Services as part of their emergency recovery efforts in response to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. She’s also held roles at The Alliance to End Hunger and Bread for the World in Washington\, DC. \nEmily holds a Master’s degree from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University\, specializing in Human Security and Humanitarian Studies\, and a BA in Political Science with a minor in International Studies and Human Rights from the University of Dayton where she earned the Truman Scholarship. She has studied in Uganda\, Rwanda\, Tanzania\, and Bangladesh and lived and worked in Uganda and the Philippines. What are the key steps to promoting successful relationships between Minnesota-based companies and China? \nJoin Global Minnesota and The U.S. Heartland China Association for a virtual conversation with economist and professor at the London School of Economics Dr. Keyu Jin. She will discuss the complex economic relationships between the U.S. and China. Dr. Jin recently released her first book\, The New China Playbook\, in which she details the economic history and development of China\, the decisions that led them to a booming economy\, and lays out a roadmap for future relations between the West and China. DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. An optional dinner will start at 7:15 following the presentation. The dinner is $25 for Woman’s Club members and $30 for non-members (plus service fee and taxes). \nThe Russian invasion of Ukraine has challenged many international norms\, including the prohibition on state aggression and the protection of civilians. Russian forces are not hiding their crimes; they attack civilian targets with missiles and have committed numerous atrocities in occupied areas. How can Russian leaders and forces be held accountable for these offenses? While policymakers are pursuing a number of options to achieve justice\, it may be years before we truly understand the gravity of the war and its impact on Ukrainians. \nThis program is presented by the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis and is open to ALL. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses several of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year and serves as the focal text for discussion groups across the country. Global Minnesota facilitates one of the largest statewide Great Decisions programs in the country by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association. Join Global Minnesota and the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis for an in-depth discussion of this important topic. \nChristi Siver\, presenter \nChristi is a perennially popular speaker at the Woman’s Club and has spoken on topics from Global Warming to Myanmar. She is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the College of St Benedict and St John’s University. She did her undergraduate work at Lewis and Clark College in Portland\, OR\, her Masters in International Relations and International Economics at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies\, and her Ph.D. in political science at the University of Washington. She teaches courses on international relations and international security. DESCRIPTION:This past month\, an incredible group of emerging professionals from countries all across Africa have been visiting Minnesota as part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship program. This program is part of the U.S. State Department’s Young African Leaders Initiative and over the years has brought thousands of young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States for academic and leadership training. \nOn this episode\, hear from two of these impressive Fellows\, Marcellin Tsihoboto and Sylvia Phaphali Adzitey. Marcellin is from Madagascar and serves as the chief officer of fishery and aquaculture at the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy. His work focuses on the coordination of fishery- and aquaculture-related activity; resolution of conflicts between organizations\, updating legislation\, and fishery development projects. Sylvia is visiting from Ghana and is a senior nursing officer at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. Ticket prices vary and are available on the FinnFest website at the link below. \nEarlier this year\, Finland officially joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization\, breaking with a decades-long tradition of relative neutrality towards the military alliance. What does Finland’s NATO membership mean in 2023 and what are the implications of bringing Finland’s military strength to NATO? Join Global Minnesota at FinnFest in Duluth for a discussion with the Ambassador of Finland to the U.S. Mikko Hautala. The conversation will be moderated by Global Minnesota Board Chair Ambassador Ross Wilson and will also include representatives of Finland’s Defense Department. \n  \nAmbassador Mikko Hautala has served as Ambassador of Finland to the United States since September 2020. Prior to that (2016-2020)\, he served as Ambassador of Finland to Russia. In 2012-2016 Ambassador Hautala worked as Foreign Policy Adviser to the President of the Republic of Finland. In 2011\, he was appointed Deputy Head of Mission to Embassy of Finland to Russia\, located in Moscow. Ambassador Hautala has also served as the Diplomatic Advisor the to Minister for Foreign Affairs (2007-2011) as well as the First Secretary at the Permanent Representation of Finland to the EU in Brussels (2002-2007). \nRoss Wilson\, U.S. Ambassador (ret.)\, Moderator \nThis program is presented by FinnFest USA. FinnFest is an annual festival that celebrates the culture and history of Finland.
