SUMMARY:Global Cooperation in the Fight Against Human Trafficking
DESCRIPTION:This program is made possible by Carlson Family Foundation. \nHuman trafficking knows no boundaries\, but neither do the efforts of those committed to ending the transportation of people from one country to another for forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation. \nJoin us for an evening seminar that will connect local anti-trafficking professionals with their international counterparts\, inform the general public on a timely issue with both local and global relevance\, and engage students and community members committed to ending human exploitation\, wherever it takes place. This program is ideal for those working across sectors to end human trafficking\, including community members\, government and law enforcement officials\, legislators\, journalists\, and representatives from human rights organizations. \nFeatured Speaker\nRamsey County Attorney John J. Choi will speak about Minnesota’s anti-trafficking efforts including his innovative approach to holding abusers accountable while working collaboratively with advocacy agencies to help victims\, which has transformed the way government intervenes in domestic violence and sex trafficking situations. \nMaking history as the first Korean-American Chief Prosecutor in the nation\, Ramsey County Attorney John Choi leads the public law and prosecution office in the most diverse county in the state. Since taking office\, John has become a state and national leader in the fight against sex trafficking. Previously as St. Paul City Attorney\, John was recognized by his colleagues across North America with the International Municipal Lawyers Association’s top award for distinguished public service. Prior to his career in the public sector\, John spent a decade in private practice focused on government relations\, administrative law\, municipal law\, and civil litigation. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Marquette University and a J.D. from Hamline University School of Law\, and was a Humphrey Fellow at the University of Minnesota. \nPanel Presentation\nMore than a dozen anti-trafficking professionals from around the world will share their countries’ experiences and describe the support networks they are creating to end this practice. These visitors will be in Minnesota as part of our Professional Exchanges program and participants in the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. \nModerated by Michele Garnett McKenzie\, Deputy Director\, Director of Advocacy for the Advocates for Human Rights. \nFollowing the program\, all attendees are invited to an hors d’oeuvre reception to meet the international visitors and speakers. \nNew Member Special*\nBecome a new Global Minnesota member at the $75 level or above and attend this seminar for free! Call us at 612.625.1662 to register for the New Member Special. \n*New member tax deductibility will be impacted by the benefits received through this special.

SUMMARY:Mexico and the U.S. at a Crossroad with Ambassador Gutiérrez
DESCRIPTION:We are disappointed to announce that the Ambassador of Mexico has had to postpone his visit to Minnesota due to complications with the NAFTA negotiations. We recognize the ambassador’s important role in this situation and look forward to hosting him in the near future. This luncheon and program has been postponed until further notice. If you have questions\, please contact us at 612.625.1662. \nMexico and the U.S. share one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world. The governments and citizens of both countries play central roles in shaping each other’s political\, economic\, social\, and cultural development. And decisions made on both sides of the border directly impact the lives of millions. \nJoin us for a luncheon program with Ambassador of Mexico Gerónimo Gutiérrez Fernández\, where he will discuss the internal and external forces critical to the U.S.-Mexico relationship including NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement)\, immigration\, and the stability and security of our shared border. \nRegistration includes a three-course plated lunch. \nAbout the Ambassador\n\nWith a diverse 15-year career in the Mexican federal government\, Ambassador Gutiérrez previously served in prominent positions in trade\, finance\, diplomacy\, and national security under four Mexican presidents\, including as Under Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean where he was responsible for normalizing the Mexico-Cuba relationship following a period of strained relations and strengthening security and anti-narcotics cooperation with several Latin American and Caribbean countries. On the political front\, he worked as part of President-elect Vicente Fox’s transition team. Additionally\, he has contributed editorials to several Mexican and U.S. newspapers and magazines and regularly participates as a keynote speaker at conferences related to U.S.-Mexico relations\, border affairs\, and international business. Gutiérrez holds bachelor degrees in economics and political science from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México and a master’s in public administration from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government\, for which he received a Fulbright-Garcia Robles Scholarship. \nEvent vouchers accepted. To register with a voucher\, please call us at 612.625.1662. You must bring voucher(s) to the event to redeem. \nPresented in partnership with the Consulate of Mexico in Saint Paul.
