SUMMARY:A Conversation with Ambassador Awad on the Current State of Somalia

Please see below for details. \nJoin us as we welcome Ambassador Ahmed Isse Awad\, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of The Federal Republic of Somalia\, to Minnesota for a special program on Somalia. Ambassador Awad will speak about economic\, political\, and cultural aspects of Somalia as well as the country’s efforts to rebuild after years of war. \nThe program will also include a moderated Q&A session. \nAbout Ambassador Awad\nAmbassador Ahmed Isse Awad is the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of The Federal Republic of Somalia. He had the honor to reopen the Somali Embassy in Washington\, D.C. after it has been closed for 24 years. Before his post in Washington\, D.C.\, Ambassador Awad worked in peacebuilding for UN Peacekeeping missions in Sudan\, where he promoted conflict resolution\, peace\, reconciliation and trust building\, good governance\, and the role of civil society in the peace process. Prior to joining the UN\, Ambassador Awad participated as a resource person in the Somali Reconciliation Conference in Arta in Djibouti and the Somalia National Reconciliation Conference in Kenya. He also served as Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister for The Transitional National Government of Somalia. His work and interests include the promotion of peace and state-building in post-conflict societies\, democratic governance\, diplomacy\, international relations\, global affairs\, and empowerment of youth and women. Ambassador Awad holds a master’s degree from the Institute of Peace and Security Studies of the Addis Ababa University and a bachelor’s degree from Concordia University in Montreal\, Canada. \nRegistration strongly recommended. Please call 612.625.1662. \nCyber conflict is a new and continually developing threat\, which can include foreign interference in elections\, industrial sabotage\, and attacks on infrastructure. Russia has been accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential elections in the United States\, and China is highly committed to using cyberspace as a tool of national policy. Dealing with cyber conflict will require new ways of looking at 21st-century warfare. \nJoin us for a discussion with Andrew Borene\, Senior Director\, U.S. Federal National Security Group Leader at Symantec Corporation\, on the United States’ ability to respond to growing cyber threats. \nAbout the Speaker\nAndrew Borene\, JD\, CISSP\, is the Senior Director of Symantec’s Federal National Security Group. In this role\, he is responsible for leading a team that delivers innovation and integrated cyber defense solutions to protect U.S. National Security and Intelligence Community customers. Before joining Symantec\, Andrew was a senior advisor to the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence where he supported industry\, academic\, military\, and worldwide partnership efforts. In previous government service\, he was an Associate Deputy General Counsel at the Department of Defense and after 9/11\, he served overseas as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Marine Corps\, and later was awarded a U.S. Department of State Fellowship to study post-conflict peacebuilding efforts in Northern Ireland. His private sector experience includes leadership roles with IBM\, Deloitte\, LexisNexis\, Wells Fargo & Co.\, and high-tech start-ups. Andrew is a recognized media analyst on technology\, law\, and national security policy and has been the homeland program director at George Mason University Law School’s National Security Institute. He has held adjunct faculty appointments at Georgetown University\, American University\, Macalester College\, and the University of Minnesota. Andrew is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional and chairs the Cyber Security Summit advisory board. He has been recognized with the FBI Director’s Award for Exceptional Service in the Public Interest and is a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is presented in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library and the Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central.
