SUMMARY:Trade Insights and Networking: NAFTA 2.0
DESCRIPTION:Since 1994\, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has significantly affected its three signatories: Canada\, Mexico\, and the United States. In 2018\, it was announced that an agreement had been reached to replace NAFTA with the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA). While the USMCA is pending implementation\, Minnesota companies are eager for insights on the future of North American trade relations. \nJoin us for this annual trade insights and holiday networking event as we hear from Gerardo Guerrero\, Consul of Mexico\, and from Ariel Delouya\, Consul General of Canada\, regarding their views on the renegotiation of NAFTA and the future of the USMCA. \nRegistration includes hors d’oeuvres and one drink ticket. Door prizes and a complimentary Global Minnesota membership will be raffled off. \nAbout Consul Guerrero\nThe fourth Consul of Mexico in St. Paul\, Gerardo Guerrero has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1987 and joined the Diplomatic Corps in 1997. Consul Guerrero served as an attorney in several legal offices within the Ministry\, as well as at the Consulate in New York. Most recently\, he served as Deputy Legal Advisor in charge of the negotiation and final approval of all international treaties and agreements signed by Mexico. He also participated in international negotiations in the Atomic Energy International Organization\, in the World Intellectual Property Organization\, and in the International Civil Aviation Organization. Consul Guerrero studied law at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México\, received a master’s degree from The Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México\, and a Master of Law from the University of Houston. He has taught at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México\, at the Universidad Iberoamericana\, and at the Escuela Libre de Derecho in México City. \nAbout Consul General Delouya\nAriel Delouya is currently Consul General at the Consulate General of Canada in Minneapolis. From 2009 to 2012\, he served as Ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Tunisia. He also served as Minister-Counsellor for Congressional and Legal Affairs at the Embassy of Canada to the United States\, in Washington\, D.C. (2002-2006) and was posted to Ankara\, Turkey from 1987 to 1989. In Ottawa\, Mr. Delouya has held a number of positions\, including Departmental spokesperson with the Media Relations Office and Deputy Director of the International Economic Relations and Summits Division\, where he was responsible for G7 summits. From 1998 to 2002\, Mr. Delouya was on secondment to the Privy Council Office\, first as foreign policy advisor in the Foreign and Defence Policy Secretariat from 1998 to 2000\, and then as chief of staff to the Clerk of the Privy Council from 2000 to 2002. From 2006 to 2009\, he worked as Director of the Policy Research Division at Global Affairs Headquarters\, as Executive Director for Mission Inspections from 2012 to 2014\, and as Director General of the Engaging Canadians Bureau from 2014 to 2018. \nPresented in partnership with the Minnesota District Export Council\, the Minnesota Trade Office\, and U.S. Commercial Service.

SUMMARY:Doing Business in Brazil in Turbulent Times
DESCRIPTION:The election of Jair Bolsonaro. The burning of the Amazon Rainforest. The constant ups and downs of the economy. It is indeed a challenging time to be doing business in Brazil. But for those American companies that accept the challenge\, the rewards can be quite substantial. \nCome listen to representatives from three Minnesota companies that have successfully navigated the waters of Brazilian trade and commerce\, as they discuss the obstacles that they have faced in the Brazilian market and how they turned them into opportunities. The program will include a panel discussion featuring Paulo Telles from Crown Iron Works\, Andrew Hense from Loram Maintenance of Way\, Inc.\, and Global Minnesota board member Dr. John Pournoor from 3M. \nREGISTER\n\nPlease note: U.S. Bank Plaza follows a security protocol that requires all visitors to the building to register and be issued a guest badge. Our rich tradition of global-mindedness in business\, education\, hospitality\, health and wellness\, culture\, and in the arts remains crucial to ensuring our continued success. What is the current global pulse of Minnesota? How are we doing\, as a region\, when it comes to maximizing the benefits of trade\, travel\, tourism\, professional and student exchanges\, international conferences and symposiums\, and other “two-way streets” that connect Minnesotans to the world and the world to Minnesota. \nJoin a discussion with Global Minnesota’s President Mark Ritchie as he looks back over the evolution of Minnesota as one of the leading international regions\, provides a snapshot of key indicators of the current global pulse of the state\, and looks ahead at challenges and opportunities as we approach 2020. \nGlobal Minnesota was created 67 years ago to promote the well-being of our state by advancing international understanding and engagement.  This presentation will provide both a report card on how we’re doing and a road map to new opportunities. \nAbout Mark Ritchie\nMark Ritchie is President of Global Minnesota\, leading the organization’s mission to advance international understanding and engagement. A graduate of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and Iowa State University\, he served as Minnesota’s Secretary of State from 2007 to 2015. Since leaving elected public service\, Mark has led the public-private partnership working to bring the 2027 World Expo to Minnesota and he has served on the board of directors for LifeSource\, Communicating for America\, U.S. Vote Foundation\, and Expo USA. Mark also is a national advisory board member of the federal Election Assistance Commission and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Minnesota. Mark is the appointed Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army\, representing Minnesota. \nPresented in partnership with Landmark Center.
