DESCRIPTION:Global Minnesota’s Classroom Connection program inspires our littlest learners with fun and interactive lessons about a country’s culture\, language\, and daily life. International volunteers from all over the world go to elementary and middle school classrooms to spark global curiosity about people from other countries. Global Minnesota recently expanded this program to Mankato\, Minnesota\, further increasing our reach across the state. \nOn this episode\, we are joined by Angie Davis\, a kindergarten teacher with Washington Elementary School in Mankato\, Nowrin Koly\, a Classroom Connection volunteer from Bangladesh\, and Madeline Wildeson\, Assistant Director for Retention at the Kearney International Center at MSU Mankato. SUMMARY:Global Social: 2024 Mandela Washington Fellows
DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to everyone.  \nMeet the University of Minnesota’s 2024 cohort of Mandela Washington Fellows! The Mandela Washington Fellowship is a nationwide program that brings young leaders from across Africa to the United States for academic and leadership training. The Fellows enrich their U.S. host communities through public service\, cultural exchange\, and the lasting personal ties they create during their program. They are working on projects related to climate sustainability\, disability rights\, health and wellness programming\, and teaching to name just a few. \nNetwork with the next generation of leaders over light appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages. We’ll also have fun Minnesota-themed trivia and hear from some of the Fellows regarding their experience in Minnesota and their professional trajectory. This year’s cohort is made up of 25 young leaders from 19 different countries\, including Angola\, Benin\, Djibouti\, Democratic Republic of the Congo\, Eswatini\, Ethiopia\, Gabon\, Ghana\, Ivory Coast\, Kenya\, Liberia\, Madagascar\, Mali\, Namibia\, Niger\, Nigeria\, Rwanda\, Tanzania\, and Zambia. \nThe Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) from the U.S. Department of State. SUMMARY:Edina Great Decisions: Mideast Realignment
DESCRIPTION:The United States and the Middle East are at a crossroads. In spite of a reduced presence in the Middle East\, the U.S. still has significant national interests in the region. Can the U.S. continue to defend its priorities in the Middle East and globally with a lower level of military and political involvement\, or should it recommit to a leading role in the region? \nThis program is presented by Edina Community Ed through a partnership with the Edina Senior Center\, the Edina Library\, and Edina Community Center. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year. Global Minnesota facilitates the statewide Great Decisions program by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association. Great Decisions books contain a articles and materials authored by experts on each topic to provide a nonpartisan basis for understanding the important global issues of our time. A limited number of discounted books are available for purchase by Global Minnesota members and groups ordering ten or more books.
