SUMMARY:Waterfall Hike & Outdoor Concert
DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to international and globally-minded students. Registration is now closed. \nJoin Global Minnesota for a fun Minnesota summer party! \nDid you know that the word Minnehaha means “curling water” in the Dakota language? We’ll conclude with a live music concert at the bandstand near the waterfall\, featuring acoustic guitar and Americana music. \nAgenda:\n• 4:30-5:00 pm: Arrival\, Check-in\, and Waterfall Pictures\n• 5:00-6:00 pm: Hike\n• 6:00-7:00 pm: Picnic Time\n• 7:00 pm: Scott Liber Outdoor Concert (acoustic guitar\, Americana music) \nIf you have questions or if you are ISSS staff who would like to join\, please contact Jo Mattos at jmattos@globalminnesota.org. SUMMARY:Unrest in Ecuador: Post-Election Challenges
DESCRIPTION:This event is being held virtually and is open to everyone. \nAs the youngest elected president in Ecuador’s history\, President Daniel Noboa is determined to pave a new way forward for a country in crisis. Ecuador\, a country with a rich history\, vibrant cultural landscape and incredible geographic diversity\, was one of the safest countries in Latin America as recently as 2019. In the last year\, Ecuador has faced rising tension and gang violence\, including a sharp increase in homicides and an on-air takeover of an influential TV news station this past January. With elections scheduled for February 2025\, he has less than a year to address the nation’s security challenges while navigating diplomatic frictions and a struggling economy. \nJoin Global Minnesota and Glaeldys González Calanche\, the Giustra Fellow for the Latin America and Caribbean Program of the International Crisis Group for a virtual webinar breaking down the challenges facing Ecuador\, as well as the possibilities and opportunities for a positive future in Ecuador. \nAbout Glaeldys González Calanche: \nGlaeldys González Calanche is Giustra Fellow in the International Crisis Group’s Latin America and Caribbean Program. In this role\, she conducts field research\, formulates policy recommendations\, and assists in the Program’s advocacy activities related to conflict prevention and mitigation in the region. She currently leads the program’s research on Bolivia\, Ecuador and Peru. \nGlaeldys holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political and Administrative Sciences with an emphasis on International Relations from the Central University of Venezuela and a Master’s Degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Salamanca. Glaeldys is based in Bogotá\, Colombia and is a native speaker of Spanish. \nThanks to promotional sponsors the Minnesota International NGO Network and the United Nations Association of Minnesota. \nIf you require an accessibility accommodation\, please email Events Manager Katie Kelley at kkelley@globalminnesota.org two weeks ahead of the event. \nIf you are registering for this event from outside the United States\, please go here.
