As the “Year of Elections” draws to a close\, new governments have been and will be coming to power in countries all over the world. What challenges and opportunities can we expect in U.S. foreign policy in 2025 and how will a new administration handle the complexities of today’s international landscape? \nJoin us for the insightful and popular U.S. Foreign Policy Update with Diplomat in Residence and career Foreign Service Officer\, Tom Hanson. He will explore foreign policy developments\, trends\, and challenges facing the U.S. in the year ahead including the impacts of the 2024 presidential election\, the continued conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East\, the expanding influence of the BRICS consortium\, and the ongoing struggle towards global peace and security. \nGlobal Minnesota members are encouraged to bring a guest at the member rate to experience one of our most popular programs. Don’t miss your chance to stay up-to-date on the year’s most impactful developments in international relations! \nRegister Here \nAbout Tom Hanson\nThomas Hanson is a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State whose diplomatic postings included East Germany\, France\, Norway\, the Soviet Union\, Sweden\, and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.  He also participated in the opening of new U.S. embassies in Mongolia and Estonia\, worked on the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives\, and served as Director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington\, D.C. \nMr. Hanson currently is Diplomat in Residence at the Alworth Institute for International Affairs at the University of Minnesota – Duluth and has taught diplomacy at Carleton College.  He also serves as Chair of the Minnesota Committee on Foreign Relations and as Co-Chair of the Minnesota International Business Council. He is a past board member of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights and Director at the Institute for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (IEECA). He is also a member of the U.S. Foreign Policy Working Group of the British International Studies Association (BISA) as well as the Council of Advisers at the Museum of Russian Art and the Minnesota Peace Initiative (MPI) at Norway House. \nAs a member of the Great Decisions advisory committee of Global Minnesota\, Mr. Hanson speaks frequently on international issues and contributes to local and international media. \nMr. Hanson holds a BA degree from the University of Minnesota and graduate degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy; the Institute of Advanced International Studies in Geneva\, Switzerland; and the National School of Administration (ENA) in Paris\, France. \nIf you require an accessibility accommodation\, please contact Events Manager Katie Kelley at kkelley@globalminnesota.org two weeks ahead of the event. \nThe University of Minnesota is not endorsing or sponsoring the activities conducted by Global Minnesota on the University of Minnesota campus. DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and is open to everyone.  \nThe Artificial Intelligence revolution is the leading edge of a larger high-tech revolution which promises to transform the world. Experts argue that international cooperation is needed to expand the opportunities these new technologies hold while protecting societies from their dangers. What are the key policy debates in this area\, and what are the opportunities and limits on global AI rules of the road? How will the AI revolution impact American national security? \nThis program is presented by Edina Community Ed through a partnership with the Edina Senior Center\, the Edina Library\, the Edina Community Center\, and Global Minnesota. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most timely foreign policy issues facing the United States each year. Global Minnesota facilitates discussion groups across the state\, providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and offering Great Decisions books produced by the Foreign Policy Association. A limited number of discounted books are available for purchase by Global Minnesota members and groups ordering ten or more books.  \nChristi Siver\, presenter \nChristi Siver is a Professor of Political Science at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. She did her undergraduate work at Lewis and Clark College in Portland\, OR\, her Masters in International Relations and International Economics at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies\, and her Ph.D. in political science at the University of Washington. She teaches courses on international relations and international security.
