Military strikes by the U.S. and Israel have brought renewed urgency to understanding Iran’s strategic posture as the conflict continues to impact regional security\, global commerce\, and international alliances. \nJoin Global Minnesota for a conversation with Dr. Vali Nasr\, a leading authority on Iran and the Middle East. Drawing on lessons from his new book Iran’s Grand Strategy: A Political History\, Dr. Nasr will explore the political evolution of the Islamic Republic and examine how its internal dynamics\, regional ambitions\, and strategic calculations may shape the course of current conflicts and security around the world. Check out the many benefits of membership and join today. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Vali Nasr\nVali Nasr is the Majid Khadduri Professor of International Affairs and Middle East Studies at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)\, and Non-Resident Senior Advisor in the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He served as the eighth Dean of Johns Hopkins SAIS between 2012 and 2019 and served as Senior Advisor to U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan\, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke between 2009 and 2011. \nHe has advised senior American policymakers\, world leaders\, and businesses\, including the President\, Secretary of State\, senior members of Congress\, and presidential campaigns. He has written for New York Times\, Foreign Affairs\, Financial Times\, Wall Street Journal\, and The Washington Post\, among others. \nProfessor Nasr serves as the co-director of the SAIS Rethinking Iran Initiative at Johns Hopkins University\, the leading hub for fostering a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of contemporary Iran and its regional influence within academia and the public sphere. He is a member of the International Board of Advisors of the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University\, the International Board of Advisors at the American University of Beirut\, the Global Board of Trustees of Asia Society\, and he is on the Board of Advisors of Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore. He has been the recipient of grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation\, the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation\, and the Social Science Research Council\, and was named a 2006 Carnegie Scholar\, and held the 2024-25 Henry Alfred Kissinger Chair in Foreign Policy and International Relations at The John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress. \nHe received his B.A. from Tufts University in International Relations summa cum laude and was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa in 1983. He earned his Master’s from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in international economics and Middle East studies in 1984\, and his Ph.D. from MIT in political science in 1991. \nModerator: Arshad Mohammed\nArshad Mohammed is a senior fellow in the global policy area. DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to everyone.  \nTanzania has long been viewed as a pillar of peace and stability in East Africa\, and the country is renowned for its abundant wildlife and stunning landscape. U.S. partnerships with Tanzania have been defined by collaborations in development\, education\, environment\, and security. However\, this relationship is in flux following volatile elections and changing dynamics for international aid. \nGlobal Minnesota is delighted to partner with the Landmark Center for a Global Conversation with former USAID Mission Director in Tanzania\, V. Kate Somvongsiri\, who will offer insights on the significance of this fascinating country and expectations moving forward. Guests are welcome to bring a bag lunch to this event. \nRegister \nSpeaker: Veeraya (Kate) Somvongsiri\nV. Kate Somvongsiri is a senior executive in international affairs with 25 years of development experience in Asia\, Africa\, and Eastern Europe. She was a career member of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Senior Foreign Service\, retiring in September 2025 from her last assignment as Mission Director for USAID Pakistan. Prior to that\, she served as the Mission Director in Tanzania (2021-23)\, Deputy Mission Director in Tanzania (2019–21)\, and Acting Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Bureau of Democracy\, Conflict\, and Humanitarian Assistance (2017–19). Other postings include: Indonesia\, Afghanistan\, Ukraine\, and Washington. In recognition of sustained impact over her career\, she was awarded a Presidential Meritorious Rank Award by President Joseph Biden in 2024. \nPrior to USAID\, Ms. Somvongsiri served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal\, volunteered with an NGO focused on Burmese migrant issues in Thailand\, and worked for the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy\, Human Rights\, and Labor. She holds a B.A. in Letters from the University of Oklahoma and an M.A. in international relations from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. She is a 2017 Distinguished Graduate of the National War College with an M.A. in National Security Strategy. Challenge your understanding of international events at Academic WorldQuest. This event brings together high school students across the state of Minnesota in an exciting and interactive competition about critical issues facing the U.S. and the world. Academic WorldQuest is provided at no cost to teachers and students. \nThe competition prepares students to better understand our globally-connected world. DESCRIPTION:This event is being held virtually and is open to everyone.  \nThe Arctic is a critical crossroads for a number of geopolitical priorities today\, including international security\, climate change\, and economic competition. Together with the recent changes to the U.S. position on Greenland in the Kingdom of Denmark\, the Arctic is and will remain an important topic in international affairs in 2026. \nJoin Global Minnesota for a noon webinar and discussion on February 25 with Jim DeHart\, a former career member of the Senior Foreign Service and U.S. Coordinator for the Arctic Region. \nRegister \nSpeaker: Jim DeHart\nJim DeHart is an experienced diplomat\, writer\, and speaker with more than 33 years of experience at the U.S. Department of State. He retired in 2025 with the senior rank of Minister Counselor. Jim served as U.S. Consul General in Vancouver\, Canada from 2023-2025. He served as Coordinator for SIV Diplomacy from 2022-2023 and as U.S. Coordinator for the Arctic Region from 2020-2022. He brings significant experience in regional security\, civilian-military cooperation\, and international negotiations. A hallmark of his career has been close collaboration with U.S. allies and partners to advance shared interests and values. \nIn 2021\, Jim helped lead the evacuation of American citizens and Afghan Allies from Kabul and led the Afghanistan Task Force in Washington. From 2019-2020\, Jim negotiated status of forces\, defense cooperation\, and burden-sharing agreements worldwide. He served twice in Afghanistan – as Assistant Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassy Kabul (2018-2019) and in Panjshir Province as Director of the only civilian-led U.S. Provincial Reconstruction Team (2009-2010). From 2015–2018\, Jim served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Oslo\, Norway\, with extended periods as Chargé d’Affaires. Previously\, he was Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) where he oversaw assistance to Afghanistan and Pakistan and global programs targeting corruption\, money laundering\, and organized crime. From 2010-2013\, Jim was Director of the Office of Afghanistan Affairs. \nJim was a Rusk Fellow at Georgetown University where he taught a graduate-level course on NATO enlargement and wrote for publication. He served as Director for Central Asia on the National Security Council Staff at the White House and as Deputy Director for Caucasus and Central Asian Affairs at the State Department. He worked for two Under Secretaries of State as Special Assistant for Europe and Eurasia and served overseas at NATO Headquarters in Brussels\, Belgium; in Melbourne\, Australia; and in Istanbul\, Turkey. He also served as desk officer for Greece and in the State Department Operations Center. \nJim was raised in a Foreign Service family in Australia\, Hong Kong\, the Dominican Republic\, Mexico\, Washington\, DC\, and Central Oregon. Learn more about membership benefits here. \nRegister Here \nAbout Tom Hanson\nThomas Hanson is a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State whose diplomatic postings included East Germany\, France\, Norway\, the Soviet Union\, Sweden\, and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.  He also participated in the opening of new U.S. embassies in Mongolia and Estonia\, worked on the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives\, and served as Director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington\, D.C. \nMr. Hanson currently is Diplomat in Residence at the Alworth Institute for International Affairs at the University of Minnesota – Duluth and has taught diplomacy at Carleton College.  He also serves as Chair of the Minnesota Committee on Foreign Relations and as Co-Chair of the Minnesota International Business Council. He is a past board member of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights and Director at the Institute for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (IEECA). He leads News Hour’s daily foreign coverage\, including multiple trips to Ukraine since the full-scale invasion\, and has created weeklong series for the News Hour from nearly a dozen countries. \nThe PBS News Hour series “Inside Putin’s Russia” won a 2017 Peabody Award and the National Press Club’s Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence. In 2020 he received the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Arthur Ross Media Award for Distinguished Reporting and Analysis of Foreign Affairs. He was a member of the News Hour teams awarded a 2021 Peabody for coverage of COVID-19\, and a 2023 DuPont Columbia Award for coverage of Afghanistan and Ukraine. \nPrior to PBS News Hour\, Nick was Al Jazeera America’s Middle East correspondent. He led the channel’s coverage of the 2014 war in Gaza; reported on the Syrian war from Syria’s Turkish\, Lebanese and Jordanian borders; and covered the annexation of Crimea. He won an Overseas Press Club award for his Gaza coverage and a National Headliners Award for his Ukraine coverage. \nFrom 2008-2012\, Nick served as the ABC News correspondent in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Her overseas assignments included Afghanistan\, China\, Mauritania\, Pakistan\, South Africa\, and the United Arab Emirates\, as well as Washington\, DC. Her final assignment was as the U.S. Consul General in Durban\, South Africa. \nOriginally from Minneapolis\, Anne now lives in the Twin Cities where she is involved in a variety of non-profits and regularly lectures around Minnesota on global issues. To satisfy the creative side of her brain\, she also works at a flower shop. \nShe has a B.A. in Urban Studies from the University of Minnesota and a M.S. in National Security Strategy from the National War College in Washington\, DC. From the legacy of the 1947 partition to ongoing tensions along the Line of Control\, Kashmir is an enduring point of regional and international concern. \nFollowing flare-ups in April and May of 2025\, the international community is called to consider the factors that perpetuate this significant divide. Dr. Arijit Mazumdar joins Global Minnesota from the Department of Political Science at the University of St. Thomas to discuss the history and ongoing expectations surrounding Kashmir. \nThis event is being provided for university students preparing for a diplomacy simulation. Global Minnesota members and community members are welcome to register. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Arijit Mazumdar\nDr. Arijit Mazumdar is Professor of Political Science and Director of International Studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul\, Minnesota. He joined the St. Thomas faculty in 2008\, where he teaches courses on Asian politics\, comparative foreign policy\, and the politics of the developing world. His research interests include contemporary India\, with a focus on its foreign policy and soft power diplomacy\, as well as the politics\, security\, and diplomacy of other key Asian powers such as China and Japan. DESCRIPTION:Due to scheduling changes\, this event and the planned visit by Speaker Norlén have been cancelled. \nSweden’s 250-year relationship with the United States has been defined by exchange and collaboration. With close ties to Minnesota\, this partnership has expanded to fit changing dynamics in world affairs through deepening opportunities for cooperation and Sweden’s NATO accession in 2024. \nJoin Global Minnesota\, the Honorary Consulate of Sweden\, and the American Swedish Institute to celebrate this crucial relationship in a fireside chat with Andreas Norlén\, Sweden’s Speaker of Parliament. Don’t miss this engaging dialogue with one of Sweden’s highest elected officials. \nAbout the Speaker: Andreas Norlén\n \nAndreas Norlén was elected Speaker of the Riksdag in 2018 and served as a member of parliament for Östergötland County for the Moderate Party prior to his election as Speaker. In the Riksdag\, he has been the Chair of the Committee on the Constitution\, a member of the Committee on the Constitution\, a member of the War Delegation\, and an alternate member of the Committee on Justice and of the Advisory Council on Foreign Affairs. \nDuring his years as Chair of the Committee on the Constitution\, Andreas Norlén worked to ensure broad support for the conclusions reached by the Committee regarding scrutiny of ministers of government. Andreas Norlén believes that it is crucial that the Committee on the Constitution should have broad support in the Riksdag and should remain consistent when there is a change in the political majority. He also worked for broad political consensus in matters affecting the Constitution and preventive measures to counteract violent extremism. \nAndreas Norlén is a Doctor of Laws\, having previously been awarded the degree of Master of Commercial and Business Law at Linköping University and Bachelor of Laws at Stockholm University. \nFor many years\, Andreas Norlén has also been active in the family company\, Kurirengruppen i Sverige AB\, which publishes newspapers. Today\, the demand for decarbonizing our buildings has become more urgent thanks to climate change\, commensurate resource constraints\, and federal/state/local legislation. Innovators in this field have capitalized on our connected world and artificial intelligence–leading to the emergence of smart buildings. How do we design a building that is both smart and healthy? As we evolve on our path toward a carbon neutral future\, how do we ensure that the quality of life within our buildings continues to enhance and elevate the human experience — what can we learn from our international partners on how to future proof the built environment? \nIn Global Minnesota’s next sustainable development goals roundtable series we will examine how to Design Smart and Healthy Buildings.
