You’ll explore the famous Swedish Coffee Pot water tower\, see the Dala horse and Swedish-inspired murals\, visit downtown shops\, and stop by a local bakery. \nYou’ll then continue on to Interstate State Park in Taylors Falls for a bring-your-own-picnic lunch and an afternoon exploring the beautiful St. Croix River Valley. Light snacks will be provided. SUMMARY:The Human Cost of War: Understanding the Crisis in Sudan
DESCRIPTION:This event is being held virtually and is open to everyone. \nDecades of political instability and disputes over power in Sudan have resulted in a calamitous civil war. In 2023\, fighting erupted between rival military groups: the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has precipitated extreme violence\, large-scale massacres\, mass displacement\, and an alarming humanitarian crisis. Now\, fighting has expanded throughout most of the country\, with civilians often bearing the brunt of the violence as infrastructure collapses and access to food\, healthcare\, and safety become scarce. \nJoin Global Minnesota for a panel discussion on the current situation in Sudan and how international actors are responding to the crisis. The conversation will feature Ambassador Michelle Gavin\, the Council on Foreign Relations’ Senior Fellow for Africa Policy Studies\, and Oge Onubogu\, Director and Senior Fellow of the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Global Minnesota Program Director Erin Hart\, who served as press officer for Southern Africa and Sudan at the U.S. Department of State from 2024-2025\, will moderate the event and audience Q&A. \nRegister \nAbout the Speaker: Michelle D. Gavin\nMichelle D. Gavin is the Ralph Bunche senior fellow for Africa policy studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. She has over twenty-five years of experience in international affairs in government and non-profit roles and was formerly the managing director of The Africa Center\, a multidisciplinary institution dedicated to increasing understanding of contemporary Africa. From 2011 to 2014 she was the U.S. Ambassador to Botswana and served concurrently as the U.S. Representative to the Southern African Development Community. \nDuring Ambassador Gavin’s tenure\, the United States and Botswana launched the most ambitious HIV prevention study in the world; Botswana hosted Southern Accord\, the 1\,400-strong joint SADC-U.S. military exercise; and the U.S. embassy helped to found Botswana’s first American Chamber of Commerce. Prior to that\, she was a special assistant to President Obama and the senior director for Africa at the National Security Council\, where she helped to create the Young African Leaders Initiative and led major policy reviews of Sudan and Somalia. \nPreviously\, Ambassador Gavin was an international affairs fellow and adjunct fellow for Africa at CFR. She has also worked in the U.S. Senate\, where she was the staff director for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Subcommittee on African Affairs\, director of international policy issues for Senator Russ Feingold\, and legislative director for Senator Ken Salazar. \nGavin received an M.Phil in international relations from Oxford University\, where she was a Rhodes scholar\, and earned her B.A. from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service\, where she was a Truman scholar. She serves on the board of directors of Points of Light. \nAbout the Speaker: Oge Onubogu\nOge Onubogu is Director and Senior Fellow of the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a foreign policy leader with two decades of experience shaping policy and engagement on Africa and U.S.–Africa relations. She has worked extensively with African governments\, international organizations\, civil society\, academia\, and the private sector. Most recently\, Onubogu served as Director of the Africa Program at the Wilson Center\, where she led research and programs that centered African knowledge and agency in developing actionable strategies to address critical issues facing Africa and U.S.-Africa relations. \nPreviously\, she was Director of the West Africa Program at the U.S. Institute of Peace\, where she expanded USIP’s work in Nigeria and Coastal West Africa. Earlier in her career\, she led governance and democracy support initiatives in Washington\, D.C.\, and across Africa—including Angola\, Botswana\, Cameroon\, Ghana\, Liberia\, Madagascar\, Malawi\, Mozambique\, Nigeria\, Sierra Leone\, South Africa\, Zambia\, and Zimbabwe —with the National Democratic Institute and the National Endowment for Democracy. Onubogu has consulted for Freedom House\, the World Bank\, and the Carter Center\, and coordinated refugee resettlement programs with the International Rescue Committee. \nHer commentary has appeared in major publications and broadcast outlets\, and she has testified before Congress. She holds an M.A. in International Development from the Heller School at Brandeis University and a B.A. in International and Area Studies from the University of Oklahoma. She also earned a Public Leadership Credential from the Harvard Kennedy School and is completing a Doctorate in International Affairs at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to everyone.  \nSince the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1786\, Morocco and the United States have shared the longest unbroken diplomatic relationship in U.S. history. Over the centuries\, this bilateral relationship has grown through collaboration in law enforcement\, joint military training\, and counterterrorism efforts\, as well as cooperation in education\, economic development\, and the strengthening of civil society. \nJoin Global Minnesota and the Landmark Center for a Global Conversation featuring former Chargé d’affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission to the U.S. Embassy in Morocco Matt Lussenhop\, who will share insights on the history\, strategic importance\, and future of the U.S.–Morocco relationship. \nJenni’s Cafe will be open for guests to purchase lunch at the Landmark Center. Bag lunches are also welcome. \nThank you to the Landmark Center for their collaboration on this event. \nRegister \nSpeaker: Matthew Lussenhop\nMatthew Lussenhop served as a Foreign Service Officer from 1990 to 2022. From 2019 until his retirement in 2022\, he worked in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary\, including one year as Acting Assistant Secretary in July 2019. He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Belgium (2016-2019)\, including 18 months as Chargé d’affaires\, and as DCM at the U.S. Embassy to the Kingdom of Morocco\, ten months as the Chargé d’affaires (2013-16). \nMr. Lussenhop served in the fields of public diplomacy and strategic communications in numerous posts overseas\, including Public Affairs Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul\, Afghanistan from 2010-2011. Other overseas assignments include positions at U.S. embassies in Bulgaria\, Kuwait\, Morocco\, Oman\, the Philippines\, and Saudi Arabia. His domestic work in the State Department includes Director of Policy in ECA\, Director of Public Diplomacy Training at the Foreign Service Institute\, and press officer in the Office of Near Eastern and North African Affairs. He retired with the rank of Minister-Counselor and is the recipient of multiple State Department Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards and a Presidential Rank Award. With 76 feet of soft sandy shoreline and the cool\, clear waters of spring-fed Shady Oak Lake\, it’s the perfect place to enjoy the beauty of the season. \nRegistration includes beach pass (normally $7)\, light snacks\, and refreshing nonalcoholic beverages while supplies last. To stay comfortable\, please remember to bring your own beach towel\, sunscreen\, water bottle\, and any extra snacks you might enjoy. \nSpots are limited and will be filled on a first come\, first served basis. He currently holds the diplomatic rank of Minister-Counselor. Between August 2023 and April 2025\, he served as Minister-Counselor\, Deputy Head of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova to the U. S. \nPreviously\, he was the Director of European Union affairs (2021–2023)\, Counselor at the Mission of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union (2018–2021)\, and held various positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration\, as well as at the Embassies of the Republic of Moldova in Ukraine and the EU\, beginning in 2008. \nHe holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Economic Relations from the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova\, Francophone branch (2008)\, and two Master’s degrees: one in Business Administration from ASEM (2010)\, and another in International and Institutional Law from ULIM (2017). He served as the eighth Dean of Johns Hopkins SAIS between 2012 and 2019 and served as Senior Advisor to U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan\, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke between 2009 and 2011. \nHe has advised senior American policymakers\, world leaders\, and businesses\, including the President\, Secretary of State\, senior members of Congress\, and presidential campaigns. He has written for New York Times\, Foreign Affairs\, Financial Times\, Wall Street Journal\, and The Washington Post\, among others. \nProfessor Nasr serves as the co-director of the SAIS Rethinking Iran Initiative at Johns Hopkins University\, the leading hub for fostering a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of contemporary Iran and its regional influence within academia and the public sphere. Kate Somvongsiri\, who will offer insights on the significance of this fascinating country and expectations moving forward. Kate Somvongsiri is a senior executive in international affairs with 25 years of development experience in Asia\, Africa\, and Eastern Europe. She holds a B.A. in Letters from the University of Oklahoma and an M.A. in international relations from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Together with the recent changes to the U.S. position on Greenland in the Kingdom of Denmark\, the Arctic is and will remain an important topic in international affairs in 2026. \nJoin Global Minnesota for a noon webinar and discussion on February 25 with Jim DeHart\, a former career member of the Senior Foreign Service and U.S. Coordinator for the Arctic Region. \nRegister \nSpeaker: Jim DeHart\nJim DeHart is an experienced diplomat\, writer\, and speaker with more than 33 years of experience at the U.S. Department of State. He retired in 2025 with the senior rank of Minister Counselor. Jim served as U.S. Consul General in Vancouver\, Canada from 2023-2025. He served as Coordinator for SIV Diplomacy from 2022-2023 and as U.S. Coordinator for the Arctic Region from 2020-2022. He brings significant experience in regional security\, civilian-military cooperation\, and international negotiations. A hallmark of his career has been close collaboration with U.S. allies and partners to advance shared interests and values. \nIn 2021\, Jim helped lead the evacuation of American citizens and Afghan Allies from Kabul and led the Afghanistan Task Force in Washington. From 2019-2020\, Jim negotiated status of forces\, defense cooperation\, and burden-sharing agreements worldwide. He served twice in Afghanistan – as Assistant Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassy Kabul (2018-2019) and in Panjshir Province as Director of the only civilian-led U.S. Provincial Reconstruction Team (2009-2010). From 2015–2018\, Jim served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Oslo\, Norway\, with extended periods as Chargé d’Affaires. Previously\, he was Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) where he oversaw assistance to Afghanistan and Pakistan and global programs targeting corruption\, money laundering\, and organized crime. From 2010-2013\, Jim was Director of the Office of Afghanistan Affairs. \nJim was a Rusk Fellow at Georgetown University where he taught a graduate-level course on NATO enlargement and wrote for publication. He served as Director for Central Asia on the National Security Council Staff at the White House and as Deputy Director for Caucasus and Central Asian Affairs at the State Department. He worked for two Under Secretaries of State as Special Assistant for Europe and Eurasia and served overseas at NATO Headquarters in Brussels\, Belgium; in Melbourne\, Australia; and in Istanbul\, Turkey. He also served as desk officer for Greece and in the State Department Operations Center. \nJim was raised in a Foreign Service family in Australia\, Hong Kong\, the Dominican Republic\, Mexico\, Washington\, DC\, and Central Oregon. Learn more about membership benefits here. \nRegister Here \nAbout Tom Hanson\nThomas Hanson is a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State whose diplomatic postings included East Germany\, France\, Norway\, the Soviet Union\, Sweden\, and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.  He also participated in the opening of new U.S. embassies in Mongolia and Estonia\, worked on the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives\, and served as Director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington\, D.C. \nMr. Hanson currently is Diplomat in Residence at the Alworth Institute for International Affairs at the University of Minnesota – Duluth and has taught diplomacy at Carleton College.  He also serves as Chair of the Minnesota Committee on Foreign Relations and as Co-Chair of the Minnesota International Business Council. He is a past board member of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights and Director at the Institute for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (IEECA). Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence. In 2020 he received the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Arthur Ross Media Award for Distinguished Reporting and Analysis of Foreign Affairs. He was a member of the News Hour teams awarded a 2021 Peabody for coverage of COVID-19\, and a 2023 DuPont Columbia Award for coverage of Afghanistan and Ukraine. \nPrior to PBS News Hour\, Nick was Al Jazeera America’s Middle East correspondent. He led the channel’s coverage of the 2014 war in Gaza; reported on the Syrian war from Syria’s Turkish\, Lebanese and Jordanian borders; and covered the annexation of Crimea. He won an Overseas Press Club award for his Gaza coverage and a National Headliners Award for his Ukraine coverage. \nFrom 2008-2012\, Nick served as the ABC News correspondent in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In 2011 he was one of the first journalists to arrive in Abbottabad\, Pakistan\, after Osama bin Laden’s death and delivered one of the year’s biggest exclusives: the first video from inside bin Laden’s compound. His reporting helped ABC News win an Edward R. Murrow award for its bin Laden coverage. \nNick is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a board member of the Overseas Press Club Foundation. Once there\, you’ll be able to enjoy a live holiday music performance\, explore the European Christmas Market\, and join the community for the annual tree lighting ceremony.
