DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, Global Minnesota was delighted to host Fellows from the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) to Minnesota as part of our Professional Exchanges Program. The YLAI program gathers emerging leaders from all across Latin America\, the Caribbean\, and Canada to advance their entrepreneurial ideas and effectively contribute to social and economic development in their communities. \nOne such visitor was Luis V. Villaherrera\, who is fighting for democracy and human rights in El Salvador. In 2017\, he co-founded TRACODA\, which stands for transparency\, social control\, and open data\, to create innovative projects that focus on technological tools to combat corruption and foster democracy. After the government banned his platform\, he founded The Center for Democratic Strengthening. As part of this incredible work\, he recently won a prestigious Obama Foundation Scholars award and hopes to use the program help build grassroots movements\, deliver messages to a broader audience\, and push for accountability in government throughout Central America and beyond. With rising GDP and tensions in the region\, what are the obstacles and opportunities for Kosovo’s international relations? \nJoin Global Minnesota and the Humphrey School of Public Affairs to hear from the Ambassador of Kosovo to the United States\, Ilir Dugolli. Ambassador Dugolli will explore Kosovo’s journey towards independence\, its prospects for international engagement\, and future opportunities for the U.S.-Kosovo relationship. \nAbout Ambassador Dugolli:\nIlir Dugolli currently serves as Ambassador of Kosovo to the United States. He previously served as Ambassador of Kosovo to Turkey (with concurrent accreditations to Jordan\, Pakistan and Afghanistan)\, Sweden (with concurrent accreditations to Norway\, Finland\, Estonia\, Lithuania\, Latvia\, and Iceland)\, and Belgium (covering also Luxembourg\, the European Union\, and NATO). Following Kosovo’s independence\, he was among the first group of diplomats charged with establishing Kosovo’s diplomatic missions. He was previously affiliated with the Law School of the University of Prishtina as well as a number of civil society initiatives. This event is being held in-person and virtually and is open to everyone. \nAs Ukraine approaches the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion\, increasing attention is turning towards long-term strategies for the country’s security\, recovery\, and rebuilding. Ukraine has begun accession negotiations with the European Union and a NATO Summit in 2024 will likely discuss Ukraine’s future in this strategic alliance. \nWhile Ukraine’s fight for democracy\, sovereignty\, and European integration continues\, the reality on the ground is complicated. The country faces persistent missile attacks from Russia\, has endured significant destruction of its infrastructure\, lost thousands of lives\, and roughly 15% of Ukraine’s territory remains occupied. How will Ukraine rebuild itself once the fighting concludes? What does the peace building and recovery process look like? \nJoin Global Minnesota for a timely discussion of Ukraine’s postwar outlook with two distinguished guests joining virtually: Arseniy Yatsenyuk\, Chairman of the Kyiv Security Forum and former Prime Minister of Ukraine and Oleksandra Matviichuk\, Head of the Center for Civic Liberties and 2022 Nobel Prize Laureate. Prime Minister Yatsenyuk has led the Government of Ukraine in 2014-2016\, right after the Revolution of Dignity. In his time in the government\, he has taken key strategic decisions that have strengthened democracy and provided the path to the European integration\, including strengthening energy security\, providing visa free regime with the EU\, supporting Ukrainian Armed Forces that have been vital reform that became a part of Ukrainian sustainability in time of large-scaled war that Russia has launched against Ukraine in February 2022. Today\, he is leading the national platform Kyiv Security Forum providing the opportunity for politicians\, activists and international expert to discuss the current national and global geopolitical and security trends\, as well as to develop the solutions for Ukraine’s post-war rebuilding. \nAbout Oleksandra Matviichuk  \nOleksandra Matviichuk is a Ukrainian human rights lawyer and head of Ukraine’s Nobel Peace Prize winning Center for Civil Liberties\, which promotes human rights legislation\, exercises public oversight over law enforcement agencies and the judiciary\, conducts educational activities for young people\, implements international solidarity programs\, and works to foster democracy in Ukraine and the OSCE region. She also coordinates the work of Euromaidan SOS\, a grassroots legal assistance initiative that was created in response to the violent dispersal of a peaceful student demonstration in Maidan Square\, in Kyiv on November 30\, 2013. Most recently\, after Russia’s invasion in February 2022\, Oleksandra and several partners created the Tribunal for Putin initiative to document international crimes under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court in all regions of Ukraine that have been targeted by Russian attacks. Tom will explore and discuss the latest foreign policy developments\, trends\, and challenges facing the U.S. in the year ahead including the repercussions from the ongoing war in Ukraine\, concerns facing China’s economy\, renewed conflict in the Middle East\, and ongoing global struggles for peace and security. The reception is free and open to the public \nAbout Tom Hanson\nThomas Hanson is a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State whose diplomatic postings included East Germany\, France\, Norway\, the Soviet Union\, Sweden\, and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.  He also participated in the opening of new U.S. embassies in Mongolia and Estonia\, worked on the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives\, and served as Director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington\, D.C. \nMr. Hanson currently is Diplomat in Residence at the Alworth Institute for International Affairs at the University of Minnesota – Duluth and has taught diplomacy at Carleton College.  He also serves as Chair of the Minnesota Committee on Foreign Relations and as Co-Chair of the Minnesota China Business Council. He is a past board member of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights and Director at the Institute for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (IEECA). He is also a member of the U.S. Foreign Policy Working Group of the British International Studies Association (BISA) as well as the Council of Advisers at the Museum of Russian Art and the Minnesota Peace Initiative (MPI) at Norway House. \nAs a member of the Great Decisions advisory committee of Global Minnesota\, Mr. Hanson speaks frequently on international issues and contributes to local and international media. SUMMARY:Podcast Episode: Bringing the World to Minnesota Classrooms
DESCRIPTION:Classroom Connection is part of Global Minnesota’s K-12 Education programs and brings the world to classrooms all over Minnesota. International visitors\, many of whom are students at local universities\, teach sessions on their country’s culture and language in a fun and interactive format that sparks the curiosity of our youngest learners. These lessons are unique to each class and can be conducted either virtually or in-person. There is no fee to participate and Global Minnesota staff handle all of the logistics for visitor placement and travel. \nMarzia Saleem is one of this year’s Humphrey Fellows and volunteered at Anne Sullivan Elementary School in the first grade classes of Whitney Newbauer and Amanda Davey. Companies and organizations set sustainability goals with a combination of short-term and long-term targets. But what about very long-term goals? The United Nations SDG goals reach out to the year 2050 and beyond. What does the road look like– and what tools are available– for such long-range thinking and planning? And how do we set a course that is not only sustainable but restorative? \nJoin us January 11 when nationally recognized futurist Trista Harris will keynote the next Sustainable Development Goals Roundtable offering some answers to these questions. Trista is the president of FutureGood\, a consultancy that helps visionary leaders build a better future. She speaks internationally about using the tools of futurism in the social sector. \nThe event will also feature additional experts on sustainable–and restorative–development. One such program is the Young Leaders of the America’s Initiative. This State Department program empowers young entrepreneurs to strengthen their capacity to launch and advance their ideas and effectively contribute to social and economic development in their home communities. \nOn this episode\, hear from one of last year’s YLAI Fellows who recently returned to Minnesota to showcase his new projects as part of the State Department’s Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund. Leorian Ricardo is Creative Director at Moro Studio\, an arts and publishing studio that is leading the development of the comic book industry and providing professional opportunities for young talent and new\, underrepresented voices in the Dominican Republic. Central to achieving that objective is enhancing the professional capacity of America’s diplomats to maximize the promotion of U.S. national interests. \nWhile the State Department’s footprint has grown from 41 diplomatic posts throughout the world in 1900 to more than 270 missions today\, the need to increase the ability to hire and retain the highest quality individuals continues. In a dynamic and significantly connected world\, what does our nation need from those representing us on the diplomatic front? How can the diplomatic corps be prepared for future opportunities and unexpected disruptions?  Join Global Minnesota for a conversation with Ambassador and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Ronald Neumann about his recommendations to modernize America’s diplomacy. Ambassador Neumann will share his personal insights and provide a behind-the-scenes look at diplomacy from his long career representing the United States. Neumann served three times as Ambassador; to Algeria\, Bahrain and finally to Afghanistan from July 2005 to April 2007. Before Afghanistan\, Mr. Neumann\, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service\, served in Baghdad from February 2004 with the Coalition Provisional Authority and then as Embassy Baghdad’s liaison with the Multinational Command\, where he was deeply involved in coordinating the political part of military actions. \nPrior to working in Iraq\, he was Ambassador in Manama\, Bahrain (2001-2004)\, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Near East Affairs (1997-2000) with responsibility for North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula\, and Ambassador to Algeria (1994 to 1997). He was Director of the Office of Northern Gulf Affairs (Iran and Iraq; 1991 to 1994). Earlier in his career\, he was Deputy Chief of Mission in Abu Dhabi\, United Arab Emirates\, and in Sanaa in Yemen\, Principal Officer in Tabriz\, Iran and Economic/Commercial Officer in Dakar\, Senegal. His previous Washington assignments include service as Jordan Desk officer\, Staff Assistant in the Middle East (NEA) Bureau\, and Political Officer in the Office of Southern European Affairs. \nAmbassador Neumann serves as the President at the American Academy of Diplomacy where he has focused particularly on efforts to maintain adequate State and USAID budgets and staffing and upgrade professional formation to enable these institutions to carry out their responsibilities. He is on the Advisory Board of a non-profit girls’ school in Afghanistan\, the School of Leadership\, Afghanistan (SOLA) and the Advisory Board of Spirit of America. He is on the board of the Middle East Policy Council and the Advisory Council of the World Affairs Councils of America. DESCRIPTION:This event is AT CAPACITY.  Please reach out to our Events Manager Katie Kelley at kkelley@globalminnesota.org with any questions.  \nIn 1960\, Cyprus became independent from the United Kingdom\, but its early years were marked by violence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The United Nations established a buffer zone in 1964 to diffuse rising tensions. Ten years later\, after a Greece-sponsored coup in Cyprus\, Turkey sent thousands of troops to the island\, citing its right as a guarantor power to do so. Nearly 200\,000 Greek Cypriots living in the northern part of the island were forced or fled to the south; 60\,000 Turkish Cypriots living in the south did the same to the north. The island and the capital city of Nicosia have been divided since then\, despite international attempts to reunify Cyprus. U.N. troops remain to protect the peace\, but periodic flare-ups of violence have occurred as recently as August 2023. Join Global Minnesota for a conversation with former U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus\, Kathleen Doherty. \nDue to its location in the Eastern Mediterranean\, Turkey\, Greece\, the United Kingdom\, Russia\, the United States and increasingly Israel and China see Cyprus as having strategic geopolitical importance. The island is also known as a favored investment spot\, including illicit finance of Russia\, China\, and others; and now has the highest percentage per capita of refugees in Europe. Given all of these dimensions\, is there a diplomatic path forward for a long-term solution? Ambassador Doherty will outline the current status of the Cyprus issue\, the obstacles to establishing a permanent solution\, and how diplomacy can play a critical role in mediating these tensions. \nAbout Ambassador Doherty:\nAmbassador Doherty served in Cyprus from 2015-2019. Before her appointment as Ambassador\, Kathleen Doherty\, a member of the Senior Foreign Service\, served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Rome between September 2013 and September 2015. She previously spent two years as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs\, where she had responsibility for managing relations with the European Union and Western Europe. Prior to that\, she was the Director for the Office of European Union and Regional Affairs. \nBefore returning to Washington D.C. in 2010\, she was Counselor for Economic Affairs in the U.S. Embassy in London. Her other overseas assignments include Moscow\, Rome and the Dominican Republic. \nAmbassador Doherty speaks Italian and Spanish and previously Portuguese and Russian\, and received one of the Department’s highest honors for her work on U.S.-EU relations. She has a M.Sc from the London School of Economics and a B.A. from Colgate University. Join us for an important discussion on countering hate. Our panel brings together experts from Germany to provide a vital case study on the combination of policy and community-based action to address problems of the past and stem rising intolerance in the present. What lessons or approaches can the United States and other countries take from these examples? \nHosted by the Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies and Global Minnesota\, this special program will feature the work of German experts\, each with decades of study and service in confronting extremism. They will explore approaches to strengthening civil society\, building resilient communities\, creating alternatives for at-risk youth\, countering extremist narratives\, protecting minorities\, and helping partners around the world build their capacity to do the same. Our presenters from across the public sector are visiting Minnesota for a professional exchange program as part of the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program. SUMMARY:Culture Through Cuisine: Nepal and Northern India
DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to everyone.  \nHelp us round out the summer with the next event in our Culture through Cuisine series as we head to St. Paul to visit Everest on Grand\, a North Indian and Nepali restaurant. We’ll hear the stories behind each dish on the menu from restaurant owner\, Roshan Chaudhary \nAppetizers\, dinner\, dessert\, and a non-alcoholic beverage are included with registration. Additional beverages\, appetizers\, and desserts are available for individual purchase. \n  \n  \nMENU: \n\nAppetizers:\nChicken Momo – Ground chicken with onion\, ginger\, garlic\, cilantro and spices in a wheat flour pastry and steamed. DESCRIPTION:This past month\, an incredible group of emerging professionals from countries all across Africa have been visiting Minnesota as part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship program. This program is part of the U.S. State Department’s Young African Leaders Initiative and over the years has brought thousands of young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States for academic and leadership training. \nOn this episode\, hear from two of these impressive Fellows\, Marcellin Tsihoboto and Sylvia Phaphali Adzitey. Marcellin is from Madagascar and serves as the chief officer of fishery and aquaculture at the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy. His work focuses on the coordination of fishery- and aquaculture-related activity; resolution of conflicts between organizations\, updating legislation\, and fishery development projects. Sylvia is visiting from Ghana and is a senior nursing officer at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. SUMMARY:Mandela Washington Fellows Meet and Greet
DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. Ticket price is $5 for Global Minnesota members and $10 for non-members.  \nMeet the University of Minnesota’s 2023 cohort of Mandela Washington Fellows! The Mandela Washington Fellowship is a nationwide program that brings young leaders from across Africa to the United States for academic and leadership training. The Fellows enrich their U.S. host communities through public service\, cultural exchange\, and the lasting personal ties they create during their program. They are working on projects related to aquaculture\, disability rights\, health and wellness programming\, non-profit management\, and teaching to name just a few. \nNetwork with the next generation of leaders over light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. We’ll also have fun Minnesota-themed trivia and hear from some of the Fellows regarding their experience in Minnesota and their professional trajectory. This year’s cohort is made up of 25 young leaders from 16 different countries\, including Angola\, Central African Republic\, Ethiopia\,  Ghana\, Kenya\, Liberia\, Madagascar\, Niger\, Nigeria\, Senegal\, Sierra Leone\, South Africa\, Tanzania\, Togo\, Uganda\, and Zambia. \nLearn more about the Fellowship here.
