SUMMARY:Great Decisions: Venezuela and the Trump Corollary
DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. \nThe latest U.S. National Security Strategy includes the “Trump Corollary” that frames a renewed assertion of U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere as central to American interests. Under this approach\, U.S. military action in Venezuela led to the removal of Nicolás Maduro in January 2026\, but key elements of his regime remain in place. Join the discussion on this timely topic with local expert Rob Scarlett on March 11. \nThis program is presented by the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis through a partnership with Global Minnesota. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year. Global Minnesota facilitates the statewide Great Decisions program by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association.  \nRob Scarlett\, presenter \nRob Scarlett has had a 40-year career in international sales and manufacturing throughout the Western Hemisphere. Shortly after graduating from Carleton College in 1966\, he became part of a private NGO team that created some of Latin America’s first microfinance institutions. Building on that experience\, he began a decades-long business career that kept him active throughout Latin America\, Central America\, Mexico\, and the Caribbean. \nIf you would like to register\, please RSVP to frontdesk@womansclub.org. \nInterested in joining or starting a Great Decisions discussion group? The dinner is $25 for Woman’s Club members and $30 for non-members (plus service fee and taxes). \nFor the past ten years\, the United States and China have been locked in a competition for who has the greatest global influence. One major point of contention is the status of Taiwanese sovereignty\, which has become even more relevant recently with the possibility that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may prompt China to take similar action regarding Taiwan. How will the United States engage a China which is increasingly seeking to expand its sphere of influence? \nDuncan McCampbell\, presenter \nDuncan McCampbell is an American lawyer and professor of international business and law at Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis. He spent 14 years—much of it living abroad—with the Westlaw division of Thomson Reuters\, starting new online businesses in the UK\, Germany\, China\, Australia\, Hong Kong and the Netherlands. His professional interests include globalization\, international business\, non-U.S. legal systems\, and corruption prevention. He has served as Co-Chair of the Minnesota China Business Council\, Minnesota’s oldest China business organization. He publishes frequently on global commercial\, legal\, political and security issues. In addition to his writing and teaching\, Prof. McCampbell leads a business consultancy that helps companies enter new overseas markets. Professor McCampbell’s new book on U.S./China relations\, Sunset Over China\, is due to release by the end of the year \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year. Global Minnesota facilitates the statewide Great Decisions program by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association. SUMMARY:Great Decisions: The Changing World Order
DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. An optional dinner will start at 7:15 following the presentation. The dinner is $25 for Woman’s Club members and $30 for non-members (plus service fee and taxes). \nFollowing the collapse of the Soviet Union\, the United States emerged as a lone superpower leading a unipolar world. President George H.W. Bush proclaimed a New World Order to be marked by peace\, prosperity\, and liberal democracy. \nThirty years later we live in a very different world. The United States\, while still a major power with the world’s largest military\, must navigate a multi-polar world and significant new challenges. First and foremost is the rise of China whose economy is now on par with the U.S. and is flexing its influence throughout the world as it seeks natural resources and markets for its goods. However\, China is not alone as a rising power. \nThe BRICS nations\, Brazil\, Russia\, India\, China\, and South Africa\, are increasingly influential international players and often have different interests and values than the U.S. American leadership in the world is also in question with significant portions of the U.S. electorate wanting more focus on domestic issues and less attention to foreign affairs. What could be the role of the U.S. in this changing world order? \nGary Prevost\, presenter \nGary Prevost is Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Latin American Studies at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University and Research Associate and Honorary Professor at Nelson Mandela University in South Africa.  He is the author or co-editor of close to twenty books and 100 academic articles on a range of international subjects with a primary focus on Latin America. He has taught courses on international relations for fifty years and is regular lecturer in the Great Decisions program of Global Minnesota. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year. Global Minnesota facilitates the statewide Great Decisions program by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association. Great Decisions books contain articles and materials authored by experts on each topic to provide a nonpartisan basis for understanding the important global issues of our time. SUMMARY:Great Decisions: NATO's Future
DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. An optional dinner will start at 7:15 following the presentation. The dinner is $25 for Woman’s Club members and $30 for non-members (plus service fee and taxes). \nThe North American Treaty Organization\, NATO\, was organized as a joint military defense force under the initiative of the United States to prevent the spread of Soviet communism in Europe after World War Two. \nSince the end of the Cold War in 1991\, the membership of the alliance has expanded from 19 to 32. \nThe Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24\, 2022\, turned out to be the best marketing opportunity for NATO since its formation on April 4\, 1949. In retrospect\, President Putin of Russia has inadvertently acted as the military organization’s best salesperson. Even the traditionally neutral countries of Finland and Sweden decided to join NATO out of the fear of possible Russian incursion into their territories. Why did this happen? \nHas the US policy of NATO expansion been effective or is it driving certain of its allies to move away and align themselves with Russia and its backers? \nJay Shahidi\, presenter \nMehr “Jay” Shahidi has been an international affairs researcher\, public speaker\, opinion writer\, lobbyist\, consultant and human rights activist since 1968 as well as a business owner since 1977 who now lives in Saint Louis Park. \nHe has published dozens of opinion articles and given over 1\,200 public speeches on social-political issues. Born in Tehran and a graduate of the University of Minnesota\, Mankato\, Jay is a private businessman with a lengthy history of advocacy and representation on a multitude of humanitarian boards. \nIn 2004\, Jay received the Minnesota State University\, Mankato’s Distinguished Alumni Humanitarian Award for his work on diplomacy and peace-building; public education; refugee assistance; landmines removal; population stabilization; environmental protection; economic development; and\, nuclear disarmament. His work continues today through M.J. Shahidi Business Consulting Co. which has provided organizing & management services to and advocacy for small business\, civic and charitable groups. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses some of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year. The dinner is $25 for Woman’s Club members and $30 for non-members (plus service fee and taxes). \nThe United States and the Middle East are at a crossroads. In spite of a reduced presence in the Middle East\, the U.S. still has significant national interests in the region. Can the U.S. continue to defend its priorities in the Middle East and globally with a lower level of military and political involvement\, or should it recommit to a leading role in the region? \nThis program is presented by the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis and is open to ALL. DESCRIPTION:This free event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. An optional dinner will start at 7:15 following the presentation. The dinner is $25 for Woman’s Club members and $30 for non-members (plus service fee and taxes). \nThe Russian invasion of Ukraine has challenged many international norms\, including the prohibition on state aggression and the protection of civilians. Russian forces are not hiding their crimes; they attack civilian targets with missiles and have committed numerous atrocities in occupied areas. How can Russian leaders and forces be held accountable for these offenses? While policymakers are pursuing a number of options to achieve justice\, it may be years before we truly understand the gravity of the war and its impact on Ukrainians. \nThis program is presented by the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis and is open to ALL. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses several of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year and serves as the focal text for discussion groups across the country. Global Minnesota facilitates one of the largest statewide Great Decisions programs in the country by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association. Join Global Minnesota and the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis for an in-depth discussion of this important topic. \nChristi Siver\, presenter \nChristi is a perennially popular speaker at the Woman’s Club and has spoken on topics from Global Warming to Myanmar. She is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the College of St Benedict and St John’s University. The dinner is $25 for Woman’s Club members and $30 for non-members (plus service fee and taxes). \nFor the past ten years\, the United States and China have been locked in a competition for who has the greatest global influence. How will the United States engage a China which is increasingly seeking to expand its sphere of influence? \nThis program is presented by the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis and is open to ALL. \nThe Great Decisions program addresses several of the most critical foreign policy issues facing the United States each year and serves as the focal text for discussion groups across the country. Global Minnesota facilitates one of the largest statewide Great Decisions programs in the country by providing access to a roster of local foreign policy experts and to discussion materials produced by the Foreign Policy Association.
