Join Global Minnesota to hear from the Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of African Affairs\, Molly Phee\, as she discusses U.S. policy toward this vital region. \nAssistant Secretary Phee brings a wealth of experience to her understanding of this vast and diverse continent\, comprising over 50 countries and numerous cultures\, languages and geographies. She will outline the current approach to U.S.-Africa relations and share her experiences building bridges of understanding and economic prosperity with people across Africa. Minnesota’s significant and vibrant African diaspora add to the importance and relevance of understanding this crucial relationship. \n“As the only region forecasted to have a growing working-age population in the coming decades\, Africa and its people will become increasingly influential in an otherwise ageing global economy.” — The Economist \nAbout Assistant Secretary Phee: \nMolly Phee\, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor\, was sworn in as the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs on September 30\, 2021. She most recently served as the Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation. She was U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan from 2015-2017. She previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia\, and as Chief of Staff in the Office of the Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan. Additionally she was the Acting Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs\, as well as Deputy Security Council Coordinator at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations\, handling UN engagement in Africa and the Middle East for both portfolios. \nEarlier in her career\, Phee served on the National Security Council as Director for Iraq and as the Senior Civilian Representative of the Coalition Provisional Authority to Maysan Province\, Iraq. She began her career at the U.S. Embassy in Amman\, Jordan\, and worked at U.S. Embassies in Cairo\, Egypt and Kuwait City\, Kuwait. A native of Chicago\, she is a graduate of Indiana University and earned a Master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. She has received the Distinguished Honor Award\, the Robert C. Frasure Memorial Award for conflict resolution and peacemaking\, the Baker-Wilkins Award for Outstanding Deputy Chief of Mission\, the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Award\, the Order of the British Empire Award\, and a Presidential Rank Award. McCampbell\, associate professor of international business and law at Metropolitan State University \n  \nSpeakers\nNicholas Burns \nNicholas Burns is U.S. Ambassador to China. Nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate\, he was sworn into office on December 22\, 2021. \nAs Ambassador\, he leads a team of experienced\, dedicated\, and diverse public servants from 47 U.S. government agencies and sub-agencies at the U.S. Mission in China\, including at the Embassy in Beijing and at the American Consulates in Shanghai\, Guangzhou\, Wuhan\, and Shenyang. He oversees the Mission’s interaction with the PRC on the full range of political\, security\, economic\, commercial\, consular\, and many other issues that shape this critical relationship. \nAmbassador Burns has had a distinguished career in American diplomacy\, serving six U.S. Presidents and nine Secretaries of State over 27 years. His State Department roles have included Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs\, the State Department’s third-ranking official and most senior career diplomat (2005-2008); U.S. Ambassador to NATO (2001-2005); U.S. Ambassador to Greece (1997-2001); and State Department spokesman (1995-1997). Before that\, he worked at the National Security Council at the White House (1990-1995) where he served as Special Assistant to President Clinton and Senior Director for Russia\, Ukraine and Eurasia Affairs and as Director for Soviet Affairs for President George H.W. Bush during the collapse of the USSR. \nDuncan J. McCampbell \nDuncan J. McCampbell is an American lawyer and associate professor of international business and law at Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis. Following a career in private law practice\, Prof. McCampbell joined West Publishing (now Thomson Reuters Legal)\, the world’s largest legal publisher. His work—much of it overseas—involved building new legal publishing businesses in the UK\, Germany\, Spain\, Switzerland\, the Netherlands\, Canada\, Hong Kong\, and Australia. In his last overseas assignment\, he was posted to Beijing in 2007 as managing director of TR’s China start-up\, Westlaw China. \nLeaving business for academia\, Prof. McCampbell became a tenured associate professor in the College of Management at Metropolitan State\, where he teaches undergraduate\, graduate\, and doctoral courses in law\, international business\, and marketing\, while serving as department chair. DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. \nJoin Global Minnesota and the Humphrey School of Public Affairs for a wide-ranging discussion of U.S. efforts to promote democracy and protect human rights around the globe. \nAs Under Secretary for Civilian Security\, Democracy\, and Human Rights\, Uzra Zeya leads global diplomatic efforts to strengthen democracy\, advance universal human rights\, support refugees and humanitarian relief\, promote rule of law and counternarcotics cooperation\, fight corruption and intolerance\, prevent armed conflict\, and eliminate human trafficking. In addition\, she serves as Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues\, leading U.S. efforts to support the human rights and meet the humanitarian needs of the Tibetan people and preserve their unique cultural\, religious\, and linguistic identity. \nAbout the Speaker: \nUzra Zeya was sworn as Under Secretary for Civilian Security\, Democracy\, and Human Rights by Secretary Blinken July 14\, 2021.  She leads global diplomatic efforts to strengthen democracy\, advance universal human rights\, support refugees and humanitarian relief\, promote rule of law and counternarcotics cooperation\, fight corruption and intolerance\, prevent armed conflict\, and eliminate human trafficking.  In December\, 2021\, Secretary Blinken announced her designation to serve concurrently as the U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues\, for which she leads U.S. efforts to support the human rights and meet the humanitarian needs of the Tibetan people and preserve their unique cultural\, religious\, and linguistic identity.   \n \nUnder Secretary Zeya brings to these roles over three decades of diplomatic and leadership acumen at the intersection of international peace\, security\, and human rights.  From 2019 to 2021\, she served as president and CEO of the Alliance for Peacebuilding\, a non-partisan global network of more than 130 organizations working in more than 180 countries to end conflict by peaceful means.  During her 27-year Foreign Service career\, Zeya served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’Affaires in Paris; Acting Assistant Secretary and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Democracy\, Human Rights\, and Labor; Chief of Staff to the Deputy Secretary of State; and served in Syria\, Egypt\, Oman\, Jamaica\, and in various policy roles at the Department of State.  Zeya speaks Arabic\, French and Spanish. \nPresented in partnership with the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the Committee on Foreign Relations Minnesota. \nASL interpretation provided. Huntsman\, Jr. \nJon M. Huntsman\, Jr. served as the U.S. ambassador to Russia from 2017–19\, to China from 2009–11\, and to Singapore from 1992–93. \nHuntsman has served in every presidential administration since the presidency of Ronald Reagan\, not counting the Biden administration. He began his career as a White House staff assistant for Ronald Reagan\, and was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Ambassador to Singapore by George H. W. Bush. Later as Deputy U.S. Trade Representative under George W. Bush\, he launched global trade negotiations in Doha in 2001 and guided the accession of China into the World Trade Organization. Huntsman is the only American ambassador to have served in both Russia and China\, having served as the U.S. Ambassador to China under Barack Obama from 2009 to 2011 and as the U.S. Ambassador to Russia under Donald Trump from 2017 to 2019. \nMary Curtin \nMary Curtin\, Ph.D.\, a Minnesota native\, joined the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota as diplomat-in-residence in 2013 after a 25-year career as a Department of State Foreign Service Officer. As diplomat-in-residence\, she teaches courses in foreign policy and diplomacy and serves as chair of the Humphrey School’s global policy area. \nDuring her Foreign Service career\, she served at the US Mission to the EU in Brussels; as political counselor in Warsaw\, Poland; and at missions in Tunisia\, Mali\, and Chile\, as well as in Washington\, DC. She has expertise in issues including Middle East policy; European affairs\, including the EU and NATO; human rights and democratization\, and non-proliferation. She was a member of the U.S. delegation to the 1995 UN Conference on Women. \nShe earned a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University in the City of New York (1986)\, writing her dissertation on “Hubert H.
