SUMMARY:Trade Insights and Networking: After NAFTA
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins are welcome. \nSince 1994\, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has significantly affected its three signatories: Canada\, Mexico\, and the United States. This past September\, it was announced that an agreement had been reached to replace NAFTA with the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA). While the USMCA is pending ratification\, Minnesota companies are eager for insights on the future of North American trade relations. \nJoin us for this annual trade insights and holiday networking event as we hear from Consul of Mexico Gerardo Guerrero and from Acting Consul General and Senior Trade Commissioner Suzanne Cormie from the Consulate General of Canada in Minneapolis\, regarding their views on the renegotiation of NAFTA. \nRegistration includes hors d’oeuvres and one drink ticket. Door prizes and a complimentary Global Minnesota membership will be raffled off. \nAbout Consul Guerrero\nThe fourth Consul of Mexico in St. Paul\, Gerardo has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1987 and joined the Diplomatic Corps in 1997. Consul Guerrero served as an attorney in several legal offices within the Ministry\, as well as at the Consulate in New York. Most recently\, he served as Deputy Legal Advisor in charge of the negotiation and final approval of all international treaties and agreements signed by Mexico. He also participated in international negotiations in the Atomic Energy International Organization\, in the World Intellectual Property Organization\, and in the International Civil Aviation Organization. Consul Guerrero studied law at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México\, received a master’s degree from The Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México\, and a Master of Law from the University of Houston. He has taught at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México\, at the Universidad Iberoamericana\, and at the Escuela Libre de Derecho in México City. \nAbout Acting Consul General Cormie\nSuzanne Cormie has held several different positions in the Department of Foreign Affairs\, Trade and Development Canada including assignments in Dublin\, Chicago\, Atlanta\, and at the regional office in Winnipeg. Her experience at the department headquarters in Ottawa included the positions of United Nations Elections Coordinator\, Foreign Policy Communications Strategist\, as well as serving as an officer in the United States General Relations Division\, the United States Trade Relations Division and the International Cultural Relations Branch. Most recently\, Miss Cormie comes to Minnesota from the Canadian Embassy in Dublin\, Ireland\, where she spent six years as the Senior Trade Commissioner and Counsellor\, including two lengthy periods as Chargée d’Affaires. \nPresented in partnership with GREATER MSP\, the Midwest Global Trade Association\, the Minnesota District Export Council\, the Minnesota Trade Office\, and U.S. Commercial Service.

Informal networking to follow.\n  \nGerardo Guerrero\nConsul Of Mexico\nConsulate Saint Paul\, Minnesota\nGerardo Guerrero is the 4th Consul of Mexico in St. Paul. He has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1987 and joined the Diplomatic Corps in 1997. He studied Law School at the National Autonomous University of Mexico\, received a Master degree on international trade legal aspects at ITAM and an LLM on US Law from the University of Houston. He has taught at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico\, at the Universidad Iberoamericana and at the Escuela Libre de Derecho in Mexico City. \n  \nTab A. Borden\nConsul and Trade Commissioner\, Investment\nConsulate General of Canada\, Minneapolis \nTab began his career in commercial and trade finance working with international banks based in Atlantic Canada.  In the mid 1990’s he joined the Province of Nova Scotia working for the Department of Economic Development (life sciences sector) and then Department of Environment as Executive Director of Trade and Technology Development.  In 2001 Tab joined the Canadian federal government working for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and in 2003 joining Global Affairs Canada as Manager of the Canadian Trade Office in Princeton in New Jersey.  In 2008 he was appointed as Head of Office for the Canadian Consulate in Silicon Valley.  From 2012 to 2017 Tab served as Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Relations for Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa. Tab holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dalhousie University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers.  In 2008 he completed the Venture Capital Executive Program at the University of California\, Berkeley. \nPresented in partnership with GREATER MSP\, Midwest Global Trade Association\, Minnesota District Export Council\, Minnesota Trade Office\, and U.S. Commercial Service
