SUMMARY:Global Book Club: The Cubans with Anthony DePalma
DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to everyone. A recording of the event will be available at a later date for those unable to attend.  \nThe United States and Cuba have had a tense relationship for decades. Years of mistrust and sanctions between the two governments have isolated and impacted millions of Cuba’s residents. In his latest book\, The Cubans: Ordinary Lives in Extraordinary Times\, world-renowned author and former New York Times foreign correspondent Anthony DePalma chronicles several stories of hope and despair from throughout the modern history of this Caribbean island nation. Join Global Minnesota at the Hennepin County Library for a presentation and discussion with Anthony DePalma himself about Cuba\, his life\, and the stories told throughout the book. A book signing opportunity will follow the discussion. The event will also be streamed on Global Minnesota’s YouTube channel. \nAs a special thanks to our members\, we’ll be giving away free copies of DePalma’s book to 20 lucky members who register by October 14 — but you have to be there to collect and to get your book signed! \nNot yet a member? The first 5 attendees to become members at the event will also receive a free book. Please note\, additional copies will NOT be available for purchase at the event\, but can be purchased through Magers and Quinn. \n“DePalma vividly depicts the lives of several families in modern Cuba. DePalma’s writing is evocative and detailed\, and the reader feels as though they are walking alongside the people whose aspirations and dreams he so poignantly highlights. The country comes alive with each sentence\, and the end result is an homage to Cuba and the Cuban people that is both heartbreaking and hopeful.”—The Washington Post \n\n“In this beautifully crafted work of reportage . . . DePalma takes the reader on a tour of the glorious triumphs and ardent idealism of the early days of the Cuban Revolution\, the dark years of the post-Soviet economic collapse\, the revived hopes occasioned by the thaw of U.S.-Cuban relations under U.S. President Barack Obama\, and now the seemingly endless days of deprivation.”—Foreign Affairs \nPresented in partnership with Magers & Quinn Booksellers. \n\n\nSPEAKER\n  \nAnthony DePalma spent 22 years as a reporter and foreign correspondent for The New York Times\, serving as Bureau Chief in Mexico and Canada. At The Times he also was an international business correspondent covering the Americas\, a national correspondent covering higher education\, and a metro reporter covering housing\, the working class\, and the environment. He has focused his journalism on Latin America\, especially Mexico and Cuba\, but he has also travelled widely and reported from places as diverse as Albania\, Montenegro\, Guyana\, and Suriname. Read his full biography here. \nIf you require an accessibility accommodation\, please contact our Program Director Tim Odegard at todegard@globalminnesota.org. \nModerator: Patricia Lopez – Editorial Board Member – StarTribune

SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: Women Warriors
DESCRIPTION:From Vikings and African queens to cross-dressing military doctors and World War II Russian fighter pilots\, there are incredible stories of women for whom battle was not a metaphor. The woman warrior has been cast as an anomaly — Joan of Arc\, not GI Jane. But women\, it turns out\, have always gone to war. \nJoin us for a conversation with author Pamela D. Toler as she discusses her new book\, “Women Warriors: An Unexpected History\,” and highlights the many women throughout world history who stepped out of their traditional female roles to take on other identities. Also attending the event will be Minnesota National Guard Lt. Col. Kristen Augé from Two Harbors\, Minnesota\, who will introduce Pamela. The program will include a Q&A session. \nFollowing the program\, Pamela will sign copies of her book “Women Warriors: An Unexpected History\,” which can be purchased through Amazon\, Barnes & Noble\, or IndieBound\, and will be available for purchase at the event through Magers & Quinn Booksellers. \nAbout the Speaker\nArmed with a Ph.D. in history\, a well-thumbed deck of library cards\, and a large bump of curiosity\, author\, speaker\, and historian\, Pamela D. Toler translates history for a popular audience. She goes beyond the familiar boundaries of American history to tell stories from other parts of the world as well as history from the other side of the battlefield\, the gender line\, or the color bar. Pamela is the author of eight books of popular history for children and adults. Her work has appeared in Aramco World\, Calliope\, History Channel Magazine\, MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History and Time.com. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is presented in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library and Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: Global Health - Progress and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nThe collective action of countries\, communities\, and organizations over the last 30 years has saved millions of lives around the world. Yet inequalities in health and wellbeing persist. The world now faces a mix of old and new health challenges\, including the preventable deaths of mothers and children\, continuing epidemics of infectious diseases\, and rising rates of chronic disease. We also remain vulnerable to the emergence of new and deadly pandemics. For these reasons\, the next several decades will be just as important—if not more so—than the last in determining well-being across nations. \nJoin us for a discussion with Paurvi Bhatt\, Vice President of Medtronic Philanthropy and President of Medtronic Foundation\, as she discusses the world’s historic health gains and emerging challenges. \nAbout the Speaker\nAs Vice President of Medtronic Philanthropy and President of Medtronic Foundation\, Paurvi Bhatt leads the philanthropic and community affairs strategies of Medtronic\, PLC. A global health and development leader\, Paurvi’s focus includes strategic philanthropy and investment; corporate social responsibility; health benefit reimbursement; and partnership design particularly in emerging markets and resource-poor settings. She has shaped best practice health and social responsibility portfolios in several companies including Abbott\, as well as\, with the government and nonprofit sector at USAID\, US GAO\, and CARE. Her technical training is in health systems and economics with specific focus on HIV/AIDS\, women’s health\, and impact measurement. She is known for her commitment to building the next generation of women leaders in global health\, and for advocating for “working daughters.” She serves on several advisory groups and boards focusing on leadership and global health including Women Leaders in Global Health and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health Campaign Cabinet. Paurvi holds a master’s of public health from Yale University\, a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University\, and a Ph.D. (ABD) from Johns Hopkins University. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is presented in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library and Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central.

SUMMARY:11th Annual Great Decisions Conference: Media and Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. To register by phone\, please call 612.625.1662. \nToday\, state and non-state actors must maneuver a complex and rapidly evolving media landscape. Conventional journalism now competes with user-generated content. Official channels of communication can be circumvented through social media. Foreign policy is tweeted from the White House and “fake news” has entered the zeitgeist. Cyberwarfare\, hacking and misinformation pose complex security threats. How are actors using media to pursue and defend their interests in the international arena? What are the implications for U.S. policy? \nJoin us as we examine these questions and more with keynote speaker Susan D. Moeller\, Professor of Media and International Affairs at the University of Maryland\, College Park\, and author of the Great Decisions article on media and foreign policy. We’ll also hear from former U.S. Foreign Service Officer Tom Hanson\, who will discuss how foreign policy is shaped and shared in the era of “Twitter Diplomacy\,” and from Mary Stucky\, Founder and Executive Director of Round Earth Media. Finally\, two dozen international journalists with the U.S. Department of State’s Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists will attend the conference and provide unique perspectives from countries as varied as Albania\, Brazil\, Ethiopia\, New Zealand\, Thailand\, and South Africa. \nDon’t miss our post-election analysis of an issue that affects the quality of information that shapes the foreign-policy decisions of leaders and citizens\, around the world and right here in Minnesota. \nRegistration includes continental breakfast. \nConference Agenda\nCheck out information on featured speakers and agenda details. \nPresented in partnership with the Foreign Policy Association and the University of Minnesota Hubbard School of Journalism & Mass Communication.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: South Africa's Fragile Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome.  \nThe African National Congress (ANC) party has governed South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994. But the party today suffers from popular frustration over official corruption and economic stagnation. It faces growing threats from both left and right opposition parties\, even as intraparty divisions surface. Given America’s history of opportunistic engagement with Africa\, there are few prospects for a closer relationship between the two countries. Meanwhile\, a weaker ANC could lead to political fragmentation in this relatively new democracy. \nJoin us for a discussion with former Ambassador to Liberia Linda Thomas-Greenfield on the global role of South Africa and its future relations with the U.S. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Thomas-Greenfield is a Senior Counselor at Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG) where she draws on her distinguished career as a U.S. diplomat to help clients of ASG’s Africa practice. Previously\, she served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs\, where she led U.S. policy toward sub-Saharan Africa and as Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources\, where she oversaw all personnel functions for the U.S. Department of State’s 70\,000-strong workforce. A career diplomat\, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield also served as U.S. Ambassador to Liberia\, and was posted to Switzerland\, Pakistan\, Kenya\, The Gambia\, Nigeria\, and Jamaica. Her Washington postings include the Bureau of African Affairs and the Bureau of Population\, Refugees and Migration. Prior to joining the U.S. Department of State\, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield taught political science at Bucknell University. She has a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University\, a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin\, and has been honored with several awards including the Hubert Humphrey Public Leadership Award\, the Bishop John T. Walker Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award\, and the Warren Christopher Award for Outstanding Achievement in Global Affairs. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield is a Distinguished Resident Fellow in African Affairs at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is presented in partnership with Books for Africa\, the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library\, Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central\, and the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: North Korea - Fire and Fury or Dialogue and Diplomacy?
DESCRIPTION:Online registration closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nLess than a year after threatening to unleash “Fire and Fury” on North Korea\, President Trump became the first U.S. President to meet with a North Korean leader\, speaking warmly of the “special bond” he shared with Kim Jong Un and expressing their mutual desire to “leave the past behind.” Does this new diplomatic opening represent a real opportunity for a denuclearized North Korea and for an official end to the Korean War? Or is the U.S. being played by Kim Jong Un in an attempt to permanently establish North Korea as a nuclear power with the ability to threaten the U.S. at will? And what role do our allies and other great powers – including China and Russia – have to play in this high-stakes diplomatic overture? \nJoin us for a conversation with former Cultural Affairs Officer Mark Canning as he discusses the future of U.S.-North Korea relations. \nAbout the Speaker\nOriginally from Minnesota and a former competitive cyclist\, Mark Canning is a retired U.S. diplomat where he served for several decades with the U.S. Department of State. His most recent posting was at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul\, South Korea\, as Cultural Affairs Officer. During his career\, Mark served in Warsaw\, Poland\, when the Berlin Wall came down and in Johannesburg\, South Africa\, during the end of apartheid. Fluent in Mandarin\, Mark also spent three years at the Consulate in Guangzhou\, China\, and four years in Taiwan. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University and completed coursework in the MBA program at the University of Washington before joining the U.S. Department of State. Currently\, Mark teaches Chinese at Concordia Language Village camps. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is presented in partnership with Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central and the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations: U.S. Global Engagement and the Military
DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out. Online registration is closed.  \nThe global power balance is rapidly evolving\, leaving the United States at a turning point with respect to its level of engagement and the role of its military. Some argue for an “America First” paradigm\, with a large military to ensure security\, while others call for a more assertive posture overseas. Some advocate for a restoration of American multilateral leadership and a strengthened role for diplomacy. Still\, others envision a restrained U.S. role\, involving a more limited military. \nJoin us for a conversation with retired U.S. Navy Commander Jon Olson on how the military functions in today’s international order\, and how might it be balanced with diplomatic and foreign assistance capabilities. \nAbout the Speaker\nJon Olson served as a U.S. Naval Intelligence Officer before retiring in 2011 at the rank of commander. During his 21-year naval career\, Jon’s assignments included duty aboard aircraft carriers and large deck amphibious ships\, numerous international operations including to Iraq\, Bosnia\, and Afghanistan\, and service in the U.S. Navy strategic-level clandestine Human Intelligence collection operations as a CIA-trained case officer. He also qualified as a U.S. Navy parachutist\, logging 35 jumps. Jon’s final assignment before retirement was as the U.S. Naval Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki\, Finland. Since retiring\, Jon has co-authored several novels and short stories\, and a feature-length screenplay about the Falklands War named\, “A Close Run Thing.” Currently\, Jon is an adjunct professor at Carleton College and in the School of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice at Metropolitan State University. He also serves as president of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association – Upper Midwest Chapter. Jon holds a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is presented in partnership with the Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central and the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations: The Waning of Pax Americana
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nThe U.S. has begun a historic shift away from Pax Americana\, the liberal international order that was established in the wake of World War II. Since 1945\, Pax Americana has sought peaceful international relations and an open economy\, buttressed by U.S. military power. In championing “America First” isolationism and protectionism\, President Trump has shifted the political direction toward selective U.S. engagement\, where foreign commitments are limited to areas of vital U.S. interest and economic nationalism is the order of the day. \nJoin the conversation with former U.S. Foreign Service Officer\, Tom Hanson\, as he examines what this shift means for U.S. geopolitics and foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nTom Hanson currently serves as Diplomat in Residence at the Alworth Institute for International Affairs at the University of Minnesota – Duluth. He is a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer whose postings included East Germany\, France\, Norway\, the Soviet Union\, Sweden\, and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. He also participated in the opening of new U.S. embassies in Mongolia and Estonia\, worked on the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives\, and served as director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington\, D.C. A member of Global Minnesota’s Great Decisions advisory committee\, Tom speaks frequently on international issues and contributes to local and international media. He is also a board member of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights\, the International Leadership Program at the University of St. Thomas\, and the Cultural Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Minnesota – Duluth. Tom holds a BA degree from the University of Minnesota and graduate degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy; the Institute of Advanced International Studies in Switzerland; and the National School of Administration in France. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is presented in partnership with the Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central.

Thornton China Center. Stromseth has broad experience as a policymaker\, scholar\, and development practitioner and served on the Secretary of State’s policy planning staff\, advising the U.S. Department of State’s leadership on China\, Southeast Asia\, and East Asian and Pacific affairs. SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: Media and Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:Online registration closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nState and non-state actors today must maneuver in a complex and rapidly evolving media landscape. Conventional journalism now competes with user-generated content. Official channels of communication can be circumvented through social media. Foreign policy is tweeted from the White House and “fake news” has entered the zeitgeist. Cyberwarfare\, hacking\, and misinformation pose complex security threats. \nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with Ethar El-Katatney\, Executive Producer for AJ+ an Al Jazeera Media Network\, on how actors are using media to pursue and defend their interests in the international arena and what the implications are for U.S. policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nEthar El-Katatney is an Executive Producer for AJ+\, an Al Jazeera Media Network and global online news community that experiments with storytelling and social media strategies for an American millennial audience. An international-award-winning multimedia journalist and published author\, she began her career as a student reporter in 2005\, and in the decade since\, has worked as a reporter\, staff writer\, columnist\, researcher\, blogger\, and producer. El-Katatney has traveled and reported from more than 40 countries\, spanning the Middle East\, Africa\, Asia\, and Europe. She’s written stories from China and Denmark to Russia and Ghana\, interviewed ministers and sat on a panel with the president of Catalonia\, reported from a slum in Sudan and a mosque in Russia and talked at dozens of panels and conferences worldwide. El-Katatney is the first Arab and Egyptian to win a CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year Award. She has also received the Samir Kassir Freedom of the Press Award and the Anna Lindh Mediterranean Journalist Award. Born in Saudi Arabia\, and raised in Egypt\, El-Katatney has a bachelor’s degree\, an MBA\, and a master’s degree in television and digital journalism from the American University in Cairo. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is produced in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library. This Global Conversations is presented in partnership with the World Press Institute.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations MINNEAPOLIS: Turkey - A Partner in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nOf all NATO allies\, Turkey represents the most daunting challenge for the Trump administration. In the wake of a failed military coup in July 2016\, the autocratic trend in Ankara took a turn for the worse. One year on\, an overwhelming majority of the population considers the United States to be their country’s greatest security threat. In this age of a worsening “clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West\, even more important than its place on the map is what Turkey symbolically represents as the most institutionally Westernized Muslim country in the world. \nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with former Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson as he discusses the current situation in Turkey and its impact on foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Ross Wilson is a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council\, visiting lecturer in international affairs at the George Washington University\, and Global Minnesota board member. Over the course of a 30-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service\, he served as American ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan and held assignments at the U.S. Embassies in Moscow and Prague and at the U.S. Consulate General in Melbourne\, Australia. In Washington\, Ambassador Wilson held several positions including chief U.S. negotiator for the Free Trade Area of the Americas. In 2010-2014\, Ambassador Wilson served as director of the Atlantic Council’s Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center\, where he led the Council’s work on the former Soviet states\, Turkey\, and regional energy and economic issues and organized the Council’s annual Energy and Economic Summit in Istanbul. Ambassador Wilson received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and master’s degrees from Columbia University and the U.S. National War College.  He is a recipient of the president’s Meritorious Service Award\, as well as numerous Department of State awards and honors. \nGlobal Conversations in Minneapolis is produced in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library.
