DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and virtually and is open to everyone. \nFrom artificial intelligence and drone warfare to the complex realities of modern insurgencies\, the nature of conflict is changing rapidly. In this shifting technological and geopolitical landscape\, are modern wars really winnable? \nJoin Global Minnesota\, the Minneapolis Club\, and East-West Connections for an engaging conversation with retired Lt. General Jon Jensen exploring how warfare is being reshaped and what these changes mean for global stability\, national security\, and the world ahead. He will be joined in conversation with retired U.S. Navy Commander Jon Olson. \nGlobal Minnesota members\, Minneapolis Club members\, and veterans receive discounted admission. Jon Jensen recently completed a distinguished career of over 41 years in the National Guard\, with a wide range of experience in homeland security\, domestic disaster response\, and operational/strategic planning. Prior to his retirement\, Jon served as the Director of the Army National Guard and Acting Vice Chief of the National Guard Bureau. His commands include The Adjutant General of Minnesota National Guard\, 34th Infantry Division\, and 1/34 Armored Brigade Combat Team. Jon has multiple overseas deployments across peacekeeping\, peace enforcement\, and combat tours. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Finance/Economics and advanced degrees from the United States Command and General Staff College and United States Army War College. \nModerator: Jon Olson\, Commander\, U.S. Navy (ret.)\nJon Olson is a retired U.S. Navy Commander and graduate of the United States Naval Academy who served 21 years on active duty\, including deployments supporting Operations SOUTHERN WATCH\, RESTORE HOPE\, JOINT FORGE\, and ENDURING FREEDOM. Trained by the CIA as a Department of Defense case officer specializing in clandestine HUMINT operations\, he concluded his naval career as U.S. Naval Attaché in Helsinki\, Finland. After retiring in 2011\, Jon returned to Minnesota\, earned a Master of Public Affairs from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs\, and taught national security courses at Carleton College and Metropolitan State University. He continues to teach as adjunct faculty\, previously hosted National Security This Week on KYMN Radio\, and co-authors national security thrillers with fellow Naval Academy graduate David Bruns. PBS News Hour’s Foreign and Defense Correspondent Nick Schifrin has earned accolades for his ability to highlight the individual circumstances behind major global conflicts and events. \nJoin Global Minnesota and Nick Schifrin for a fireside chat on the elements behind the headlines of current international developments. From early career breakthroughs in Pakistan to recent coverage in Gaza and Ukraine\, Nick offers a nuanced and personal approach to some of the most pressing issues in international affairs. He leads News Hour’s daily foreign coverage\, including multiple trips to Ukraine since the full-scale invasion\, and has created weeklong series for the News Hour from nearly a dozen countries. \nThe PBS News Hour series “Inside Putin’s Russia” won a 2017 Peabody Award and the National Press Club’s Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence. In 2020 he received the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Arthur Ross Media Award for Distinguished Reporting and Analysis of Foreign Affairs. He was a member of the News Hour teams awarded a 2021 Peabody for coverage of COVID-19\, and a 2023 DuPont Columbia Award for coverage of Afghanistan and Ukraine. \nPrior to PBS News Hour\, Nick was Al Jazeera America’s Middle East correspondent. He led the channel’s coverage of the 2014 war in Gaza; reported on the Syrian war from Syria’s Turkish\, Lebanese and Jordanian borders; and covered the annexation of Crimea. He won an Overseas Press Club award for his Gaza coverage and a National Headliners Award for his Ukraine coverage. \nFrom 2008-2012\, Nick served as the ABC News correspondent in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In 2011 he was one of the first journalists to arrive in Abbottabad\, Pakistan\, after Osama bin Laden’s death and delivered one of the year’s biggest exclusives: the first video from inside bin Laden’s compound. His reporting helped ABC News win an Edward R. Murrow award for its bin Laden coverage. \nNick is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a board member of the Overseas Press Club Foundation.
