SUMMARY:Global Conversations: Morocco in Focus
DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to everyone.  \nSince the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1786\, Morocco and the United States have shared the longest unbroken diplomatic relationship in U.S. history. Over the centuries\, this bilateral relationship has grown through collaboration in law enforcement\, joint military training\, and counterterrorism efforts\, as well as cooperation in education\, economic development\, and the strengthening of civil society. \nJoin Global Minnesota and the Landmark Center for a Global Conversation featuring former Chargé d’affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission to the U.S. Embassy in Morocco Matt Lussenhop\, who will share insights on the history\, strategic importance\, and future of the U.S.–Morocco relationship. \nJenni’s Cafe will be open for guests to purchase lunch at the Landmark Center. Bag lunches are also welcome. \nThank you to the Landmark Center for their collaboration on this event. \nRegister \nSpeaker: Matthew Lussenhop\nMatthew Lussenhop served as a Foreign Service Officer from 1990 to 2022. From 2019 until his retirement in 2022\, he worked in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary\, including one year as Acting Assistant Secretary in July 2019. He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Belgium (2016-2019)\, including 18 months as Chargé d’affaires\, and as DCM at the U.S. Embassy to the Kingdom of Morocco\, ten months as the Chargé d’affaires (2013-16). \nMr. Lussenhop served in the fields of public diplomacy and strategic communications in numerous posts overseas\, including Public Affairs Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul\, Afghanistan from 2010-2011. Other overseas assignments include positions at U.S. embassies in Bulgaria\, Kuwait\, Morocco\, Oman\, the Philippines\, and Saudi Arabia. His domestic work in the State Department includes Director of Policy in ECA\, Director of Public Diplomacy Training at the Foreign Service Institute\, and press officer in the Office of Near Eastern and North African Affairs. He retired with the rank of Minister-Counselor and is the recipient of multiple State Department Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards and a Presidential Rank Award. DESCRIPTION:This event is being held in-person and is open to everyone.  \nTanzania has long been viewed as a pillar of peace and stability in East Africa\, and the country is renowned for its abundant wildlife and stunning landscape. U.S. partnerships with Tanzania have been defined by collaborations in development\, education\, environment\, and security. However\, this relationship is in flux following volatile elections and changing dynamics for international aid. \nGlobal Minnesota is delighted to partner with the Landmark Center for a Global Conversation with former USAID Mission Director in Tanzania\, V. Kate Somvongsiri\, who will offer insights on the significance of this fascinating country and expectations moving forward. Guests are welcome to bring a bag lunch to this event. \nRegister \nSpeaker: Veeraya (Kate) Somvongsiri\nV. Kate Somvongsiri is a senior executive in international affairs with 25 years of development experience in Asia\, Africa\, and Eastern Europe. She was a career member of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Senior Foreign Service\, retiring in September 2025 from her last assignment as Mission Director for USAID Pakistan. Prior to that\, she served as the Mission Director in Tanzania (2021-23)\, Deputy Mission Director in Tanzania (2019–21)\, and Acting Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Bureau of Democracy\, Conflict\, and Humanitarian Assistance (2017–19). Other postings include: Indonesia\, Afghanistan\, Ukraine\, and Washington. In recognition of sustained impact over her career\, she was awarded a Presidential Meritorious Rank Award by President Joseph Biden in 2024. \nPrior to USAID\, Ms. Somvongsiri served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal\, volunteered with an NGO focused on Burmese migrant issues in Thailand\, and worked for the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy\, Human Rights\, and Labor. She holds a B.A. in Letters from the University of Oklahoma and an M.A. in international relations from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. She is a 2017 Distinguished Graduate of the National War College with an M.A. in National Security Strategy.
