SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Women Warriors
DESCRIPTION:From Vikings and African queens to cross-dressing military doctors and World War II Russian fighter pilots\, there are incredible stories of women for whom battle was not a metaphor. The woman warrior has been cast as an anomaly — Joan of Arc\, not GI Jane. But women\, it turns out\, have always gone to war. \nJoin us for a conversation with author Pamela D. Toler as she discusses her new book\, “Women Warriors: An Unexpected History\,” and highlights the many women throughout world history who stepped out of their traditional female roles to take on other identities. The program will include a Q&A session with Pamela. \nAbout the Speaker\nArmed with a Ph.D. in history\, a well-thumbed deck of library cards\, and a large bump of curiosity\, author\, speaker\, and historian\, Pamela D. Toler translates history for a popular audience. She goes beyond the familiar boundaries of American history to tell stories from other parts of the world as well as history from the other side of the battlefield\, the gender line\, or the color bar. Pamela is the author of eight books of popular history for children and adults. Her work has appeared in Aramco World\, Calliope\, History Channel Magazine\, MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History and Time.com. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is presented in partnership with Landmark Center.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Global Health - Progress and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Online registration for the St. Paul event is closed. Register for the Minneapolis version of this event here. \nThe collective action of countries\, communities\, and organizations over the last 30 years has saved millions of lives around the world. Yet inequalities in health and wellbeing persist. The world now faces a mix of old and new health challenges\, including the preventable deaths of mothers and children\, continuing epidemics of infectious diseases\, and rising rates of chronic disease. We also remain vulnerable to the emergence of new and deadly pandemics. For these reasons\, the next several decades will be just as important—if not more so—than the last in determining well-being across nations. \nJoin us for a discussion with Paurvi Bhatt\, Vice President of Medtronic Philanthropy and President of Medtronic Foundation\, as she discusses the world’s historic health gains and emerging challenges. \nAbout the Speaker\nAs Vice President of Medtronic Philanthropy and President of Medtronic Foundation\, Paurvi Bhatt leads the philanthropic and community affairs strategies of Medtronic\, PLC. A global health and development leader\, Paurvi’s focus includes strategic philanthropy and investment; corporate social responsibility; health benefit reimbursement; and partnership design particularly in emerging markets and resource-poor settings. She has shaped best practice health and social responsibility portfolios in several companies including Abbott\, as well as\, with the government and nonprofit sector at USAID\, US GAO\, and CARE. Her technical training is in health systems and economics with specific focus on HIV/AIDS\, women’s health\, and impact measurement. She is known for her commitment to building the next generation of women leaders in global health\, and for advocating for “working daughters.” She serves on several advisory groups and boards focusing on leadership and global health including Women Leaders in Global Health and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health Campaign Cabinet. Paurvi holds a master’s of public health from Yale University\, a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University\, and a Ph.D. (ABD) from Johns Hopkins University. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is presented in partnership with Landmark Center.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: South Africa's Fragile Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Online registration closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nThe African National Congress (ANC) party has governed South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994. But the party today suffers from popular frustration over official corruption and economic stagnation. It faces growing threats from both left and right opposition parties\, even as intraparty divisions surface. Given America’s history of opportunistic engagement with Africa\, there are few prospects for a closer relationship between the two countries. Meanwhile\, a weaker ANC could lead to political fragmentation in this relatively new democracy. \nJoin us for a discussion with former Ambassador to Liberia Linda Thomas-Greenfield on the global role of South Africa and its future relations with the U.S. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Thomas-Greenfield is a Senior Counselor at Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG) where she draws on her distinguished career as a U.S. diplomat to help clients of ASG’s Africa practice. SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: North Korea – Fire and Fury or Dialogue and Diplomacy?
DESCRIPTION:Online registration closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nLess than a year after threatening to unleash “Fire and Fury” on North Korea\, President Trump became the first U.S. President to meet with a North Korean leader\, speaking warmly of the “special bond” he shared with Kim Jong Un and expressing their mutual desire to “leave the past behind.” Does this new diplomatic opening represent a real opportunity for a denuclearized North Korea and for an official end to the Korean War? Or is the U.S. being played by Kim Jong Un in an attempt to permanently establish North Korea as a nuclear power with the ability to threaten the U.S. at will? And what role do our allies and other great powers – including China and Russia – have to play in this high-stakes diplomatic overture? \nJoin us for a conversation with former Cultural Affairs Officer Mark Canning as he discusses the future of U.S.-North Korea relations. \nAbout the Speaker\nOriginally from Minnesota and a former competitive cyclist\, Mark Canning is a retired U.S. diplomat where he served for several decades with the U.S. Department of State. His most recent posting was at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul\, South Korea\, as Cultural Affairs Officer. During his career\, Mark served in Warsaw\, Poland\, when the Berlin Wall came down and in Johannesburg\, South Africa\, during the end of apartheid. Fluent in Mandarin\, Mark also spent three years at the Consulate in Guangzhou\, China\, and four years in Taiwan. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University and completed coursework in the MBA program at the University of Washington before joining the U.S. Department of State. Currently\, Mark teaches Chinese at Concordia Language Village camps. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is presented in partnership with Landmark Center.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Media and Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:Online registration closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nState and non-state actors today must maneuver in a complex and rapidly evolving media landscape. Foreign policy is tweeted from the White House and “fake news” has entered the zeitgeist. Cyberwarfare\, hacking\, and misinformation pose complex security threats. \nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with Ethar El-Katatney\, Executive Producer for AJ+ an Al Jazeera Media Network\, on how actors are using media to pursue and defend their interests in the international arena and what the implications are for U.S. foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nEthar El-Katatney is an Executive Producer for AJ+\, an Al Jazeera Media Network and global online news community that experiments with storytelling and social media strategies for an American millennial audience. An international-award-winning multimedia journalist and published author\, she began her career as a student reporter in 2005\, and in the decade since\, has worked as a reporter\, staff writer\, columnist\, researcher\, blogger\, and producer. El-Katatney has traveled and reported from more than 40 countries\, spanning the Middle East\, Africa\, Asia\, and Europe. She’s written stories from China and Denmark to Russia and Ghana\, interviewed ministers and sat on a panel with the president of Catalonia\, reported from a slum in Sudan and a mosque in Russia and talked at dozens of panels and conferences worldwide. El-Katatney is the first Arab and Egyptian to win a CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year Award. She has also received the Samir Kassir Freedom of the Press Award and the Anna Lindh Mediterranean Journalist Award. Born in Saudi Arabia\, and raised in Egypt\, El-Katatney has a bachelor’s degree\, an MBA\, and a master’s degree in television and digital journalism from the American University in Cairo. \nGlobal Conversations in Saint Paul is produced in partnership with Landmark Center. This Global Conversations is presented in partnership with the World Press Institute.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Turkey - A Partner in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nOf all NATO allies\, Turkey represents the most daunting challenge for the Trump administration. In the wake of a failed military coup in July 2016\, the autocratic trend in Ankara took a turn for the worse. One year on\, an overwhelming majority of the population considers the United States to be their country’s greatest security threat. In this age of a worsening “clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West\, even more important than its place on the map is what Turkey symbolically represents as the most institutionally Westernized Muslim country in the world. \nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with former Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson as he discusses the current situation in Turkey and its impact on foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Ross Wilson is a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council\, visiting lecturer in international affairs at the George Washington University\, and Global Minnesota board member. Over the course of a 30-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service\, he served as American ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan and held assignments at the U.S. Embassies in Moscow and Prague and at the U.S. Consulate General in Melbourne\, Australia. In Washington\, Ambassador Wilson held several positions including chief U.S. negotiator for the Free Trade Area of the Americas. In 2010-2014\, Ambassador Wilson served as director of the Atlantic Council’s Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center\, where he led the Council’s work on the former Soviet states\, Turkey\, and regional energy and economic issues and organized the Council’s annual Energy and Economic Summit in Istanbul. Ambassador Wilson received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and master’s degrees from Columbia University and the U.S. National War College.  He is a recipient of the president’s Meritorious Service Award\, as well as numerous Department of State awards and honors. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is produced in partnership with Landmark Center.
