SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: South Africa's Fragile Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Online registration closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nThe African National Congress (ANC) party has governed South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994. But the party today suffers from popular frustration over official corruption and economic stagnation. It faces growing threats from both left and right opposition parties\, even as intraparty divisions surface. Given America’s history of opportunistic engagement with Africa\, there are few prospects for a closer relationship between the two countries. Meanwhile\, a weaker ANC could lead to political fragmentation in this relatively new democracy. \nJoin us for a discussion with former Ambassador to Liberia Linda Thomas-Greenfield on the global role of South Africa and its future relations with the U.S. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Thomas-Greenfield is a Senior Counselor at Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG) where she draws on her distinguished career as a U.S. diplomat to help clients of ASG’s Africa practice. Previously\, she served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs\, where she led U.S. policy toward sub-Saharan Africa and as Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources\, where she oversaw all personnel functions for the U.S. Department of State’s 70\,000-strong workforce. A career diplomat\, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield also served as U.S. Ambassador to Liberia\, and was posted to Switzerland\, Pakistan\, Kenya\, The Gambia\, Nigeria\, and Jamaica. Her Washington postings include the Bureau of African Affairs and the Bureau of Population\, Refugees and Migration. Prior to joining the U.S. Department of State\, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield taught political science at Bucknell University. She has a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University\, a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin\, and has been honored with several awards including the Hubert Humphrey Public Leadership Award\, the Bishop John T. Walker Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award\, and the Warren Christopher Award for Outstanding Achievement in Global Affairs. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield is a Distinguished Resident Fellow in African Affairs at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is presented in partnership with Landmark Center.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: North Korea – Fire and Fury or Dialogue and Diplomacy?
DESCRIPTION:Online registration closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nLess than a year after threatening to unleash “Fire and Fury” on North Korea\, President Trump became the first U.S. President to meet with a North Korean leader\, speaking warmly of the “special bond” he shared with Kim Jong Un and expressing their mutual desire to “leave the past behind.” Does this new diplomatic opening represent a real opportunity for a denuclearized North Korea and for an official end to the Korean War? Or is the U.S. being played by Kim Jong Un in an attempt to permanently establish North Korea as a nuclear power with the ability to threaten the U.S. at will? And what role do our allies and other great powers – including China and Russia – have to play in this high-stakes diplomatic overture? \nJoin us for a conversation with former Cultural Affairs Officer Mark Canning as he discusses the future of U.S.-North Korea relations. \nAbout the Speaker\nOriginally from Minnesota and a former competitive cyclist\, Mark Canning is a retired U.S. diplomat where he served for several decades with the U.S. Department of State. His most recent posting was at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul\, South Korea\, as Cultural Affairs Officer. During his career\, Mark served in Warsaw\, Poland\, when the Berlin Wall came down and in Johannesburg\, South Africa\, during the end of apartheid. Fluent in Mandarin\, Mark also spent three years at the Consulate in Guangzhou\, China\, and four years in Taiwan. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University and completed coursework in the MBA program at the University of Washington before joining the U.S. Department of State. Currently\, Mark teaches Chinese at Concordia Language Village camps. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is presented in partnership with Landmark Center.

Now that he’s officially back in power\, where is he headed? Will he move forward with the economic reform he touts in theory\, but ignores in practice? Will he slip backward into Brezhnev-style stagnation? Will his supporters stick with him\, in his 18th year at the center of power? \nJoin speaker Jill Dougherty\, Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center and former Moscow bureau chief and correspondent for CNN\, for a thought-provoking evening as she discusses the future of Russian foreign policy and power in the region. \nAbout the Speaker\nJill Dougherty is an expert on Russia and the former Soviet Union. DESCRIPTION:This event is SOLD OUT. Seats are still available for the Minneapolis version of this program. Register here. \nIn the last 15 years\, China has implemented a wide-ranging strategy of economic outreach and expansion of all its national capacities\, including military and diplomatic capacities. SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Media and Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:Online registration closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nState and non-state actors today must maneuver in a complex and rapidly evolving media landscape. Conventional journalism now competes with user-generated content. Official channels of communication can be circumvented through social media. Foreign policy is tweeted from the White House and “fake news” has entered the zeitgeist. Cyberwarfare\, hacking\, and misinformation pose complex security threats. \nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with Ethar El-Katatney\, Executive Producer for AJ+ an Al Jazeera Media Network\, on how actors are using media to pursue and defend their interests in the international arena and what the implications are for U.S. foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nEthar El-Katatney is an Executive Producer for AJ+\, an Al Jazeera Media Network and global online news community that experiments with storytelling and social media strategies for an American millennial audience. An international-award-winning multimedia journalist and published author\, she began her career as a student reporter in 2005\, and in the decade since\, has worked as a reporter\, staff writer\, columnist\, researcher\, blogger\, and producer. El-Katatney has traveled and reported from more than 40 countries\, spanning the Middle East\, Africa\, Asia\, and Europe. She’s written stories from China and Denmark to Russia and Ghana\, interviewed ministers and sat on a panel with the president of Catalonia\, reported from a slum in Sudan and a mosque in Russia and talked at dozens of panels and conferences worldwide. El-Katatney is the first Arab and Egyptian to win a CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year Award. She has also received the Samir Kassir Freedom of the Press Award and the Anna Lindh Mediterranean Journalist Award. Born in Saudi Arabia\, and raised in Egypt\, El-Katatney has a bachelor’s degree\, an MBA\, and a master’s degree in television and digital journalism from the American University in Cairo. \nGlobal Conversations in Saint Paul is produced in partnership with Landmark Center. This Global Conversations is presented in partnership with the World Press Institute.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Turkey - A Partner in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. \nOf all NATO allies\, Turkey represents the most daunting challenge for the Trump administration. In the wake of a failed military coup in July 2016\, the autocratic trend in Ankara took a turn for the worse. One year on\, an overwhelming majority of the population considers the United States to be their country’s greatest security threat. In this age of a worsening “clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West\, even more important than its place on the map is what Turkey symbolically represents as the most institutionally Westernized Muslim country in the world. \nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with former Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson as he discusses the current situation in Turkey and its impact on foreign policy. \nAbout the Speaker\nAmbassador Ross Wilson is a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council\, visiting lecturer in international affairs at the George Washington University\, and Global Minnesota board member. Over the course of a 30-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service\, he served as American ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan and held assignments at the U.S. Embassies in Moscow and Prague and at the U.S. Consulate General in Melbourne\, Australia. In Washington\, Ambassador Wilson held several positions including chief U.S. negotiator for the Free Trade Area of the Americas. In 2010-2014\, Ambassador Wilson served as director of the Atlantic Council’s Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center\, where he led the Council’s work on the former Soviet states\, Turkey\, and regional energy and economic issues and organized the Council’s annual Energy and Economic Summit in Istanbul. Ambassador Wilson received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and master’s degrees from Columbia University and the U.S. National War College.  He is a recipient of the president’s Meritorious Service Award\, as well as numerous Department of State awards and honors. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is produced in partnership with Landmark Center.

DESCRIPTION:Event registration is closed\, but walk-ins are welcome. \nJoin us to learn more about the direction of politics in Latin America and the impact of populism across the continent.  The forces of change have more to do with socio-economics than ideology. Dramatic economic and political crises have coincided in countries like Brazil and Venezuela.  And there are numerous recent events throughout this diverse region to explore.  Is the coalition opposing President Maduro in Venezuela splintering?  After surviving a recent vote on corruption charges\, what direction will Brazil’s president take?   What is the impact of recent elections in Argentina?   Where are there opportunities for the U.S. to improve relations and develop an approach to Latin America befitting of the 21st century?  Erik Brand\, publisher of the Latin America Advisor\, will share insights into current developments in Venezuela and Latin America. \n  \n  \nAbout the Speaker\n Erik Brand is publisher of the Inter-American Dialogue’s Latin America Advisor in Washington\, D.C. He also directs the organization’s corporate program. Previously\, he worked at the International Advisory Group\, a publishing and public affairs firm in New York City. SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Prospects for Afghanistan and Pakistan
DESCRIPTION:Online registrations for STP Global Conversations: Afghanistan and Pakistan are closed.  Walk-ins are welcome. \nMajor internal conflict has plagued Afghanistan for four decades. The U.S.\, for its part\, has conducted military operations in the country nearly continuously since 9/11. Today\, war with the Taliban persists\, and tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan have gradually deteriorated. As his time in office drew to a close\, President Obama limited further withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. \nNewly laid-out plans from the Trump Administration for Afghanistan and the South Asia region have prompted national discussion and further questions. SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Geopolitics of Energy
DESCRIPTION:Policies to ensure the security of energy supply and access have long been domestic and foreign policy priorities for the United States and will remain so\, including for the health of our economy.  Looking ahead\, however\, two developments will increasingly affect how energy and foreign policy come together.  The first is climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in concert with others.   A second is rapid change in global markets driven by new\, large-scale consumers in China\, India\, and elsewhere and the rise of wind\, solar\, and other\, increasingly cheap renewables.   How do these factors come together\, and what will be the main areas of focus of US foreign energy policy in the years to come? \nJoin us for a thought-provoking conversation with former Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson as he discusses these factors and their effect on foreign policy. Paul is produced in partnership with the Landmark Center. \nOnline registrations for Global Conversations: Geopolitics of Energy are closed.  Walk-ins are welcome.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Conflict in the South China Sea
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is closed. Walk-ins welcome. There is still space in the Minneapolis version of this program. Click here to register. \nThe South China Sea is a locus of competing territorial claims\, and China its most vocal claimant. Beijing’s interest has intensified disputes with other countries in the region in recent years\, especially since China has increased its naval presence. Despite rising international pressure\, including an unfavorable ruling by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea\, China staunchly defends its policies in the region. Preventing tensions from boiling over is a matter of careful diplomacy. \nJoin us for a lunchtime conversation\, with Professor Duncan McCampbell\, on what is being done to promote diplomacy and prevent tensions from boiling over in the region. \nProfessor McCampbell is an American lawyer and professor of international business and law at Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis\, where he also serves as MBA Program Director.  Following 14 years—much of it abroad—with the Westlaw division of Thomson Reuters\, he has a professional background in non-U.S. legal systems. He teaches law and business in China and travels extensively in Asia. He also writes on global commercial\, legal\, political\, and security issues\, and recently returned from a one-month visit to China and the Philippines to research the evolving situation in the South China Sea. In addition to teaching\, Professor McCampbell leads a business consultancy that helps companies enter new markets overseas. \nGlobal Conversations St. Paul is produced in partnership with Landmark Center.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: Trade and Politics
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. political mood toward trade has gone sour. One need look no further than the 2016 presidential contest for the popular narrative: trade means that China wins\, at America’s expense. But do the numbers support that conclusion? The metrics used to gauge economic strength—Gross Domestic Product and balance of trade—have not kept up with the realities of modern manufacturing. Obtaining an accurate picture of U.S. economic stature requires a critique of those numbers. \nJoin us for a lunchtime conversation with Professor Varadarajan V. Chari on the development of appropriate policy solutions for the challenges at hand. \nProfessor Chari is the founding director of the Heller-Hurwicz Economics Institute\, the Paul Frenzel Land Grant Professor of Liberal Arts in the University of Minnesota Department of Economics\, and an adviser at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He received a bachelor of technology from the Indian Institute of Technology\, Bombay and his Ph.D. from Carnegie-Mellon University. He has served on the Board of Editors of many journals\, including Econometrica\, the Journal of Economic Literature\, and the Journal of Economic Perspectives. In 1998\, he was elected fellow of the Econometric Society and was named Scholar of the College by the College of Liberal Arts\, University of Minnesota\, in 2008. His research interests are in banking\, fiscal and monetary policy\, and on issues of economic development. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is produced in partnership with the Landmark Center.

SUMMARY:Global Conversations ST. PAUL: The Future of Europe
DESCRIPTION:This program is SOLD OUT. Walk-ins welcome. There is still space in the Minneapolis version of this program. Click here to register. \nThe outcome of the United Kingdom referendum on EU membership sent shockwaves across the globe. It even caught British voters by surprise. The European Union has helped secure peace in Europe for the past 70 years. Now it faces an uncertain future. Amid a refugee crisis\, lingering financial recession\, and the constant specter of terrorism\, unity seems more imperative than ever. But the Brexit vote underscores the complexities of integrating an extremely diverse continent. \nJoin us for a lunchtime conversation with foreign policy expert\, Bill Davnie\, on what post-Brexit Europe will look like and how can U.S. foreign policy adapt. \nBill Davnie served as a U.S. Department of State Foreign Service Officer from 1981 to 2007. His postings included Hong Kong\, Thailand\, USSR/Russia\, Tajikistan\, Lithuania\, and Finland\, as well as four months in Baghdad in 2007. Since retirement\, he has traveled to Israel\, Jordan\, Kenya\, Morocco\, South Korea\, and Cambodia. Prior to the Foreign Service\, he researched Islam and taught for one year in Indonesia\, and served as a Presbyterian pastor for five years in rural North Dakota. \nGlobal Conversations in St. Paul is produced in partnership with the Landmark Center.
