Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States emerged as a lone superpower leading a unipolar world. President George H.W. Bush proclaimed a New World Order to be marked by peace, prosperity, and liberal democracy.

Thirty years later we live in a very different world. The United States, while still a major power with the world’s largest military, must navigate a multi-polar world and significant new challenges. First and foremost is the rise of China whose economy is now on par with the U.S. and is flexing its influence throughout the world as it seeks natural resources and markets for its goods. However, China is not alone as a rising power.

The BRICS nations, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, are increasingly influential international players and often have different interests and values than the U.S. American leadership in the world is also in question with significant portions of the U.S. electorate wanting more focus on domestic issues and less attention to foreign affairs. What could be the role of the U.S. in this changing world order?
