In a moment of heightened tensions and a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran, Global Minnesota convened a widely attended conversation with Dr. Vali Nasr earlier this week. Bringing together students, Global Minnesota members, and community participants, the event underscored Global Minnesota’s role as a trusted and nonpartisan forum for engaging with complex international issues.

Drawing on his experience as a former U.S. advisor and leading scholar of the region, Dr. Nasr offered a nuanced assessment of Iran’s strategic position. He described the current conflict as a “test of endurance” between Iran and the U.S. Noting Iran’s geography and regional influence, he outlined how the country utilizes its leverage to seek sanctions relief and security assurances from the United States.

In conversation with Senior Fellow at the Humphrey School Arshad Mohammed, the discussion explored pressing questions around regional dynamics. An engaged audience also asked questions on Israel’s role in the conflict and public sentiment within Iran. Dr. Nasr emphasized the complexity of internal debates in Iran, where questions persist about U.S. intentions and the prospects for a durable peace.

The evening concluded with a book signing of Dr. Nasr’s new book: “Iran’s Grand Strategy: A Political History.” This critically-acclaimed history provides a deeper look into the forces shaping Iran’s global posture. Overall, the event reflected Global Minnesota’s continued leadership in fostering informed, civil dialogue, creating space for communities to better understand the world.

Thank you to the Humphrey School of Public Affairs for their help with this event.
