The U.S. announced in December 2014 that, after decades of hostility, it would begin taking major steps to normalize relations with Cuba. The announcement marked a dramatic shift away from a policy that has its roots in the Cuban revolution of 1959. In March 2016, this historic shift was officially set in motion by President Barack Obama’s visit to Cuba ― the first trip by a sitting president in 88 years.
Gary Prevost, political science professor at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University, will discuss how American and Cuban leaders today are trying to find common ground on issues of mutual interest even as they continue to see the world through very different lenses.
Gary Prevost received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Minnesota and has published widely on Latin America and Spain, including “Cuba: A Different America,” coedited with Wilber Chaffee; “United States–Cuban Relations—A Critical History,” co-authored with Esteban Morales; and numerous articles and book chapters on Nicaragua and Spanish politics. His research on Latin America has been supported by a number of grants, including a Fulbright Central American Republics Award.
Produced in partnership with the Friends of the Minneapolis Central Library.
