Amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in Europe, Global Minnesota was honored to welcome Balázs Mártonffy, Consul General of Hungary in Chicago, for a public conversation at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. The event, moderated by Global Minnesota Program Director and former U.S. Foreign Service Officer Erin Hart, offered an in-depth exploration of Hungary’s evolving role in world affairs and its connections with Minnesota.

Consul General Mártonffy provided a candid and insightful look at Hungary’s approach to international relations, particularly how it balances its national interests with its commitments as part of the global community. He discussed the changing nature of U.S.–Hungary relations across successive administrations, noting what he described as a return to “realism” in Hungary’s foreign policy. The ongoing war in Ukraine featured prominently in the discussion, with the Consul General reaffirming Hungary’s support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity alongside its extensive humanitarian assistance to those affected by the conflict.

Economic ties also took center stage during a business briefing earlier in the day with Global Minnesota Corporate Members and invited guests. Dr. Mártonffy highlighted Hungary’s strong automotive and electric battery sectors, as well as its growing emphasis on space and technology investment. These are areas that present significant opportunities for international collaboration. Minnesota-based companies including 3M and Medtronic have significant operations in Hungary, and U.S. investment in the country continues to expand.

Addressing Hungary’s domestic politics, the Consul General acknowledged the vibrancy of democratic debate while emphasizing Hungary’s enduring commitment to its parliamentary system and to representing the will of its citizens.

This visit underscored the vital importance of fostering open dialogue with international leaders and cultivating enduring global partnerships. This work remains central to Global Minnesota’s mission of connecting our state to the world.
